- Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Escapades of the Blind Bandit and Meathead: Public Disturbance by ArtemisRae - I was really sort of hesitant about reading a fic with Sokka and Toph, but the title of this fic just called to me. And the teasers in the cut tags seemed amusing and full of potential. Actually reading this fic... asd;lfkjasldfjasldf, holy crap, this is the way Sokka/Toph would go! It's not really even romantic, there may be some feelings there at best, instead they're just so brilliantly... themselves. I love the dialogue, the back and forth, the way Sokka's sulking at being forced to attend Zuko's boring wedding (post-war obviously and the implied Zuko/Mai sent me into orbit) and Aang and Katara's rection to Sokka and Toph being very... well, loud, let's say. It's just. Perfectly timed, fabulously written, hilarious, intelligent, and I squeed so hard at the end because it wasn't about shipping them, it was about them being friends. (This is actually more gen than anything, but implications of pairings in the background that so aren't the point. The focus is on Sokka and Toph, possibly future romance.)
- Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Escapades of the Blind Bandit and Meathead: Double Entendre by ArtemisRae - There is a certain point at which making fun of Zuko (who is just so amusing when he's horrified) becomes passe for me... this fic, however, was rather firmly not on the other side of that line for me. I continue to enjoy the Sokka/Toph maybe-friends-maybe-more dynamic here, I love FireLord!Zuko and his marraige, and, asd;flasdl;fa;lsf, the first thoughts going through his head when he's standing outside Sokka and Toph's door. Hilarious. (Maybe Sokka/Toph, maybe not. Implications of Zuko/Mai that aren't the point.) - Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Escapades of the Blind Bandit and Meathead - Float On by ArtemisRae - More in the Sokka/Toph series! That's not actually romantic, but could maybe potentially lead there. I don't mind the idea, so I'm content with whever the story goes. This one was nice, it's set post-war like the others, and while I fell in love with the author's humor, it was good to see something more serious, to show that the war really was a war and that not everything is quite so rosy or forgotten afterwards. It was also a nice way of furthering the Sokka/Toph relationship without pushing too hard at it, I really enjoy the way the different ways they interact with this author's work. (Maybe Sokka/Toph, maybe not.) - Avatar: The Last Airbender - Shopping by sadieko - [Note: There might be a spoiler for a moment in 3x10, so if you're allergic to spoilers, give this one a pass for a bit.] The further season three gets along, the more I find myself really wanting to get on the Sokka/Toph ship. This fic is fantastic at showing why, because Toph obviously cares and likes him, but she shows it by being gruff and stomping around and/or hitting things. Plus, it gives some really fantastic depth to Sokka's character (which he has always had, but sometimes it's easy to lose sight of that a little) and has a great sense of humor the whole way through. *thumbs up* I mean, I read this for the potential ship, but I think this actually works better on just a pure character level. (Sokka/Suki, implications of Sokka/Toph.) - Avatar: The Last Airbender - Let them be Hard-Headed by whiteshark - I was journalhopping again and happened to stumble over a link to this fic and I'm often times hit-or-miss with the single sentence style of fic, but I think this author made it work pretty well. She gets across a lot of what makes Sokka and Toph's relationship what it is--at times simple and hilarious, at other times it's complicated and not exactly happy. There's a lot said with little gestures and Sokka is such a sweet-hearted guy even when he's a dumb boy and Toph is still a badass even when she's still kind of a girl sometimes. And there were totally some perfect lines in this fic. (Sokka/Toph implied, some Sokka/other implied.) - Avatar: The Last Airbender - A Gained Perspective by Alisa - I've always not entirely hated the idea of Sokka/Toph, ever since about the middle of season two, so for season three to play with the implications of it, just a little, it's meant a lot of fanfic writers have started playing with it, too. And one of the moments that I liked was from in The Painted Lady when Toph was forced to hold onto Sokka's arm because of the city on the water meant she couldn't "see" and it's not like it was a big deal, which is why a fic like this is fantastic, because it shows what could have been going through Toph's head, in that great way that Toph has, and yet you could still see her outward appearance meshing with canon. Plus, the author has a great Toph voice. (Implications of Sokka/Toph.) - Avatar: The Last Airbender - Dis(dress) by sporkyadrasteia - After talking about Avatar over the last few days, I've somehow worked up the energy to go wading back into the fandom, especially since I haven't read nearly enough Sokka/Toph fic yet and so I started clicking links at random on atla_press, which led me to this cute little fic. It's just a short scene where Toph is having trouble sleeping because their schedules are all mixed up and she's talking to Sokka and its cute. What really won me over with it is Toph's voice and the names she called everyone, I could just hear her saying all these lines without even having to try. That alone made me like the fic. :Db (Sokka/Toph implied.) - Avatar: The Last Airbender - Four Games of Pai Sho by rosehiptea - I picked this fic up for the Sokka/Toph that the labels indicated, but what I actually got was an interesting Sokka piece. Set pre- and then post-series (and thus the speculation that comes with it), it shows four different Pai Sho games that Sokka plays over time, each associated with a different element and the affect that has on Sokka's life. What I liked about the fic is that, from pre-series to post-series, it was still very much Sokka, but you could see the character growth he'd gone through. It also does a lovely job of show the rich background world of the Avatarverse and the Sokka/Toph was surprisingly subtle for these two. It was a cool little fic. (Some Sokka/Toph, but you may enjoy it for the Sokka gen as well.) - Avatar: The Last Airbender - Mind Shadows by Alisa - This was an interesting piece that was half-dream, half-sensory piece about dreams that Sokka and Toph have, where they lose the other and they don't speak of the dream by daylight, but there's still that dull knot of tension that no one talks about either. It's an interesting piece with some pretty imagery and I like how it emphasizes the importance and genuine danger of what they're going to face soon after this story, how it would affect anyone to be in that situation. And I like how they don't really talk about it, they just dream and then try to put the thoughts out of their mind. Very lovely. (Some Sokka/Toph.) - Avatar: The Last Airbender - If I Fall Through by ArtemisRae - Okay, this is probably a little too short for me to justify recommending properly, but... it's one of those perfect little moments that didn't need to be any longer than it was! Sokka falling into a hole in the ground and Toph helps him out in her usual way. I love it because it does a beautiful job of both characters, makes me love them both so very much, and both of them together even more. ♥ (This is mostly gen, but it could be Sokka/Toph, too.) - Avatar: The Last Airbender - In the Court by ArtemisRae - ....fasd;lkfjas;lkjslj oh my god yes, this was just so so perfect. I mean. It was adorable from the very beginning, I love this pairing and I've liked pretty much everything this author has written for them, but when I got to the ending? To the point of the ficlet and realized what was going on in the scene? I totally melted into a pile of squeaky goo. So. Perfect. At least for someone who loves this pairing dearly. ♥ (Sokka/Toph.)
