[Note: As I feel I cannot rec my own fics without it being weirdly skeevy and, yet, I feel that I do a decent job with the pairing of Akiha and Umeda, I'm going to put a little note at the top here for those interested: I write Akiha/Umeda fanfic in this journal and I rationalize my note here by saying that I've probably written a good half of the fic available for the pairing and if I really want to have a comprehensive HanaKimi section.... *wry grin*]

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - A Picture is Worth 1000 Words by kasugai gummie - There are three things that I liked about this drabble. One, that it was Akiha/Umeda, which I desperately craved after nearly finishing the HanaKimi manga and it was good Akiha/Umeda. Two, the author did a fantastic job with Akiha's speech patterns, which is something I like because it really helps me picture the scene--it's not quite third-person cutesy, but it has just the right light touch of it. I loved that. And, third, it was a perfect little scenario for the characters revolving around the line ... How do you keep getting these nude pictures of me?? How could it NOT be a wonderful little Akiha/Umeda with that line/premise? At least if the author had any sort of talent and she does and, oh, this was just exactly what I needed/wanted. Plus, the last few lines? With Umeda-sensei's reaction? Hysterical. (Akiha/Umeda.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - Forward Motion by kasugai gummie - I almost didn't read this fic this morning because... well, I'm nearly out of HanaKimi manga and I am attempting to ration bits and pieces of the series that I have left, especially anything to do with Akiha and Umeda-sensei, but... the lure of fic called to me and I could not resist it. Especially not after having read the author's drabble "A Picture is Worth 1000 Words" and knowing that I really liked her versions of the characters. And in this fic (WHICH I NEED MORE OR ELSE I'LL CRY!) the author's take on Akiha is just... really solid. The balance between hyper/sugar-high and the more serious Akiha is wonderfully done--the image of him ordering that hideously sweet breakfast and watching the waitress try not to retch at the thought of it was great and the short scene with Ebi before that and realizing who it was that was sitting in his regular booth at the cafe... all those little things were done in the style of the series, so I could just see it in my head and it all felt right and I pine for more of this one. But am also thankful it exists because HanaKimi fiiiiiiiiic~ With Akiha in it! ♥ (Some Akiha/Umeda, Umeda/Ryouichi.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - Unrequited by Lady Jaida - One of the recurring elements of HanaKimi is unrequited love (much as I want to brick Umeda-sensei if he doesn't get with the program soon >_<) and this set of three POVs (for Nakatsu, Nanba, and Akiha) plays beautifully on those--each hurts in that sort of HanaKimi way. It's not devestation, it's just the kind of hurt that's unavoidable and you wish you could make it better, even if you know you can't. Nakatsu's story just... it captured so much of what I love about the character and how much he hurts even knowing that Mizuki loves Sano back, that that's where she belongs. Nanba's was lovely, because it strode that line between someone who still misses that person they love so much, but still walking forward and holding his head up high. And Akiha... Akiha's was lovely, both fun and yet still softly painful when Sempai wouldn't look back at him. There's a line in the beginning of Akiha's story, after Umeda-sensei has returned his greeting coldly, when: He feigns being hurt to disguise how hurt he is. This Akiha is the Akiha I remember, the one who can seem flighty and silly, but there's still something more going on underneath. I also love that the three stories all have the same theme, but... none of them are quite the same. One is still dealing with fresh wounds, one is trying to let go of old ones, and one is still trying and has a chance. They play wonderfully off each other for that. (All the usual canon pairings.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - Still Life by Lady Jaida - The thing that sticks out most for me is the wistful tone of this story, the soft ache of unrequited love, the way the words present images like those laid out in a professional photograph. To use such lovely language with a character like Akiha in a fanfic about a shoujo manga makes sense and... okay, I admit, a part of me rebels at the lack of resolution or progression to the Akiha/Umeda relationship, because I'm not entirely unconvinced that they're not moving forward, but... I think part of it is that I want them so badly that any fic that doesn't move them forward and instead focuses on the unrequited aspect gets a little fanging from me. But, I also admit that the slow, subtle ache this story builds in my fangirl heart is beautifully done, especially the way Akiha is presented in such a faceted way, that there are so many layers to him, but without making a big deal about them. There were also a few lines in here about the nature of people who hide themselves from others that I really fell in love with, because they felt so true here--some hide so well that you have trouble finding them and some you never realize they're hiding at all. Lovely fic with lovely imagery, even if I want to make the ;______; face for an hour after reading it. ;_______; (Akiha/Umeda.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - The Two-Step by Harukami - I would have loved this fic just for that Haru wrote it for me after a really hellish week I'd had, but I also love it because it's a shining moment between Akiha and Umeda, one that says so much without having to plainly state it, and that's one of the things I loved so much about the manga itself, too. Plus! YAY FOR KISSING! ....if I scream that at the top of my lungs often enough, do you think maybe I'll get more people to write it for me? ^_~ (Umeda/Akiha.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - cheaper by the dozen by Cathy - This fic hurt me to read. It's beautifully written, but it leaves this... dull sort of ache in my chest, this longing for something better for both Akiha and Sensei and... well, yes, that's the reaction I'm supposed to have after the story. ^_~ (JUST ONE, SOMEONE NEEDS TO WRITE ABOUT AKIHA KISSING SENSEI SENSELESS UNTIL HE FORGETS THAT HE SUPPOSEDLY DOESN'T LIKE AKIHA! >E) The writing and all the little touches (and the focus on things like Umeda's hands or the use of Akiha's photography) and the whole entire feel to the piece are lovely, in that heartbreaking sort of way. I'M GOING TO RUN AWAY AND CRY NOW. ;___; (^_~) (Akiha/Umeda, some references to Umeda/Ryouichi.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - lapse in focus by Jennifier D. - *claps hands together in delight* Akiha/Umeda fic! With kissing and everything! *twirls* What I adored about this story is that it... encompasses a lot of what's going through Umeda's head, why he reacts the way he does, but without making too big a deal of or lingering on any one particular thing, because that's just not Sensei. Plus, it strides that line between... touching drama and light, humorous story that the manga does so well. The paragraph right before they're interrupted is probably my favorite in the entire story because it's just... well, partly because it's kissing and partly because it paints the picture in my head so clearly. The end also made me grin like a maniac because... *cackles* well, I just love the Umeda family to tiny little pieces. It does reference something in a larger (unposted) story that focuses on Nanba, but I think you can get the gist easily enough from the story and I just... man, I ♥ this to tiny, tiny pieces. Jennifier's writing really suits HanaKimi, I think, that soft sort of style the manga has, so it delights me that she's writing for it. <3<3<3 (Akiha/Umeda.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - untitled by Hana - Okay. So. Hana offered to write a drabble with two names from her list of favorite characters. She was unwise enough to list pretty much the entire cast of HanaKimi. Which meant I pounced on her for Akiha and Umeda fic and any guilt I might have had about being obnoxious about it flew right out of the window when she wrote an utterly brilliant little fic. Her Akiha is utterly fantastic, not just funny and sparkly, but genuinely clever. She also has a way with words and imagery that is perfect for this series (and just plain old good writing), something that I could have just SO EASILY seen in the manga itself, and I squee with the love., seriously. I made obnoxious squeeing and burbling sounds when she posted this. This is the Akiha and Sensei that I fell so in love with. (Akiha/Umeda.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - immunity by Jennifier D. - Some part of me feels so very... satisfied by this story. It's one of those things that I wanted so badly to be written and done well and I finally have it and it's the kind of fic that quite honestly had me with a stupid grin plastered to my face the entire time I read it, an incredibly welcome pick me up on the day I read it. It's one of those stories that I had such high hopes for, the idea of Akiha interacting with Umeda's family, because it's just so rife with potential fun and Jennifier D absolutely, absolutely does the idea justice. I cackled over the dialogue and imagery, Akiha having dinner with the Umeda family, but I also fluttered over the more insightful lines and what the whole thing meant. There's a delicate balance between random, crazy batshit fun of all these whacky characters together and the more serious tones of HanaKimi, and the author strides it beautifully. Just... I believe this is what happened at some point after the manga, and you can't talk me out of it. XP Oh, and? IO RULES ALL. \o/ *happily rereads again* (Akiha/Umeda.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - Golden by Jennifier D. - *shimmers* So, I was sick last week, right? With a nasty stomach flu and Jenn-san was kind enough to write an Akiha/Umeda ficlet to cheer me up and because she posted it publicly, that means I have to talk about it. It's a The Morning After The First Time fic with these two, which I've been pining for for awhile and this was just... *happy, floaty sigh* It's a lovely combination of Umeda's general crankiness and his surprisingly... *waves hand* if you watch him long enough, you start to pick up that he's surprisingly soft towards those that mean something to him, which was reflected so well here. It's funny in all the right places, it's gorgeous in all the right places (especially when Akiha kisses him again), it's almost soft in all the right places. Plus! *big fangirl grin* Morning After fic! I love Morning After fic! (Akiha/Umeda.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - Forward Motion (chapter 3) by kasugai gummie - *shimmers* Umeda sibling interaction! <3 There is just not enough of that in the world, especially when it's written by a talented author who really gets the characters and does a fantastic job with Io, every description of her sparkling and clever. From the way she dominates her little brother and the way she can see right through him to just her very presence and all the little details (from a wave of her hand to the cologne to vague threats to the hint of secrets). Plus, the ending is very enticing and I'm quite curious to see how the next chapter is going to go. <3<3<3 (Eventual Akiha/Umeda.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - Obento by Meitachi - [Note: This fic is flocked, but I'm making an exception becuse Mei friends anyone who asks.] *squees* Oh, man, Mei needs to write more HanaKimi fic, because she does fabulously with Akiha and Umeda. She has these genuinely clever little moments that fit the characters, both with Umeda's grumpiness and with Akiha's resiliency to Umeda's put-downs. <3<3<3 It's just... it's madcap without forcing it too hard and ends with me cooing at the screen because Mei did a lovely job. (Akiha/Umeda.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - Beautiful Like You by Meg - So, like, if you don't want to hear me squeak and flail about my OTP, I suggest you skip on down to the next rec now. ♥ Because when Akiha/Umeda is written right, it totally makes me act like... well, just shy of Suppi-chan on a sugar high. When Meg writes them? Eeeeeeeeeeeeeee. ♥ Because it's Akiha and it's Umeda and it's beautiful, like pretty glossy photographs and Akiha's brilliant way of thinking that he hides behind the sheer level of retardation he has going on and you can tell just how much enthusiasm he has for Umeda in this fic without it specifically being have to be said, which is the perfect balance to strike with these characters. But also? Each image that Akiha itches to capture with a camera, each one is so lovely and beautiful and the last two make me melt into fangirl goo. I just... I love this fic because it's got Akiha's insanity captured in that lovely, shoujo-manga-style way that the manga had. Just... eeeeeee! ♥ (Akiha/Umeda.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - line meme drabbles by Kelsey - So I did that line of fic meme in my journal and Kelsey proceeded to respond and then, somehow, we started going back and forth and they were getting longer and longer, omg, SO MUCH FUN because she wrote six drabbles! Not only that, they're brilliant ones. First, she wrote Nakatsu/Julia and she totally did them justice and they just sparkled and then she wrote the shortfic around the water theme and I think I about died of spastic flailing that it was so damned perfect and, omg, Io. No, seriously, I want to drag Kelsey into this fandom like you wouldn't believe because she even writes Io with an amazing sort of brilliance. Well. And Umeda. And Akiha. And all of them. To the point I'm badly abusing the italics tags, I suspect. Anyway. The thing about Kelsey's writing is that she's really, really good, her writing is clean and smooth to read, her dialogue actually sparkles, and the little details she puts into her work are genuinely clever. I think I floated around the room for a good twenty-four hours after she wrote these. Because, seriously, Umeda spraying Akiha with the hose needs to happen more often. ♥ (Akiha/Umeda, one Nakatsu/Julia hinted at.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - Anti-Disruptive by Vikki - So, I was whining the other night and what does Vikki do? Why, she goes right ahead and proceeds to be the BESTEST PERSON IN THE WORLD. She wrote Akiha/Umeda smut! ♥ Smut that is not only lovely and hot, but hit the right notes for me, especially the first and last lines of this piece that just... all the *happy, floaty sigh*'s in the world probably wouldn't get across my love. And, omg, Akiha. And Sensei. So much love in such a short fic. ♥ (Akiha/Umeda, graphic content.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - Family by Mina Lightstar - So, I'm shameless, yes? But Mina was having a drabble meme and I had to pounce on her to make her write Akiha/Umeda, which I was utterly right to do, because, omg, so much love for this. SO MUCH LOVE. ♥ Because there are a million little bits of dialogue or lines of thought that I want to quote as Umeda grumpily treats Akiha like 'family', because the characterization is that genuinely clever and sparkling and everything I crave for with them. Especially the tea. And the second line of the fic. Oh, god, the tea and the way Akiha is just so persistent in that way he has and the beautiful, beautiful effect he has on Umeda and the most perfect summation of the Akiha/Umeda relationship ever: Umeda fights the urge to snarl. Akiha is like a rubber ball: You can throw him away, but he will only bounce back with force. Also? I love the end. *abuses the heartmark* ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ (Akiha/Umeda.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - A Fine Art by Tammaiya - Just... oh, my god, eeeeee! Tammaiya wrote this the other night after we'd spent some time squeeing over the kitten Akiha gave Umeda (he actually gave him one, Umeda actually accepted it, and he actually spends time with it--as translated in those interviews on Nakajo-sensei's site) and it is a brilliant use of the note of just how much Umeda really is like a pissy cat sometimes. It's gorgeously characterized, the dynamic between the characters and the parallels drawn (not just between Umeda and cats, but also the gorgeous way photography is worked in as well) so perfect that it makes my teeth ache. Akiha, in all his complicated layers beneath the puppy-like personality, is brilliantly done here, this is the Akiha that I fell in love with. The way you can feel how much he genuinely loves Umeda is breath-taking and the ending causes me to emit those high-pitched squeaking sounds that only dogs can hear, I think. It's brilliant, it's everything it needed to be, right down to the way the parallel actually works the further it's fleshed out. I adored this. ♥ (Akiha/Umeda.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - untitled by Kelsey - You know how I often say that I should probably sort fics elsewhere instead of in regular posts? Well, yeah. Again. But, but, but! AkiUme fic. By Kelsey. For me. And it's shiny. It also has to do with Christmas and it's funny (Akiha's last line before the final paragraph just makes me laugh out loud because it's somehow so perfect or Umeda's opening thoughts in the first paragraph are just crystal clear him) and it put one of those shiny, happy glows on my face. ♥ See? SEE? This is why I'm a spaz about my beloved pairing. It makes me feel good. XDDD (Akiha/Umeda.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - Game by Mei - *bounces* Hanakimi fic! I've been waiting ages for new Hanakimi fic! And it's date fic with Akiha and Umeda. ♥ With Umeda being grumpy and Akiha being puppy-eyed and adorable and just a little dirty-minded when it comes to Sempai and Umeda being annoyed about that, too, but not really protesting all that hard. And Akiha being sort of brilliant as he's his usual self around Umeda and Umeda being so very put-upon and the whole thing was just... sparkly. Shut up, it's my OTP and I can call it sparkly and adorable and fun and shiny IF I WANT TO. *beams* (Akiha/Umeda.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - Shotgun Wedding by Tammaiya - You know, I'm staring at my Word document and trying to figure out, "Do I explain and shift the blame right back to Tammaiya given that SHE STARTED IT? Or do I squee and sparkle over the fic instead?" I think I'll go with the squee. I ♥ Tammaiya and her AkiUme fic and she wrote this for meeeee and it's actually super sparkly and good and THEY HAVE A KID. I swear this all made sense in the evolution of it--okay, maybe it didn't, but I've been in a really girly mood lately and this means I wanted them to have a kid. She was lovely enough to indulge me. And then she went and wrote a beautiful and genuinely funny and clever fic about it. Because Umeda's characterization is grand, the way he's grumpy but not mean, the way Akiha cares and gets the meanings underneath the words even while he's still as loopy as ever. Because it should have just been pure crack, but there were moments that got to me, there's one point especially that I just wibbled like you would not believe. I think it was practically a physical sensation, given how much I love these two. Just... squeeing and flailing over the kid over here. ♥ (Akiha/Umeda.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - twenty things about retard vs doctor by Meg - Have I ever mentioned that Meg is FULL OF AWESOME? Because she totally is. FULL OF AWESOME, I tell you. As is true of this fic as well--to a point where it's hard for me not to make a fist and jam it down onto the keyboard to fully express my incoherence of love. 20 little scenes of Akiha, Umeda, and their relationship with each other, twenty different little facets that each illuminate their dynamic. I love that this fic manages to blend both touching moments with the more amusing ones, that she uses imagery beautifully here, because this pairing is wrapped up in so many of those little things. I love that I can totally see each and every one of these, I love that they can set my mind to spinning off in a million directions because they fit with the characters, I love that they balance how much Akiha and Umeda care about each other, even while Umeda is being cranky and Akiha is being a retard. I love that Akiha getting sick and Umeda's reaction can make me wibble like hell, I love that #13 makes me melt into a pile of goddamned goo, I love that #15 is so the epitome of their relationship. I love that they're genuinely clever and sparkling. I love that I love every one of these. ♥ ♥ ♥ (Akiha/Umeda.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - Motherly Love by Tammaiya - See. I have said about a million times that Seira needs to informally adopt Akiha because he needs a good mom and Seira would totally take care of him much better. Which is why I'm so delighted that Tammaiya wrote this piece, because it hits that part of me that wibbles so hard over these characters but doesn't overdo it. It's got this beautifully layered feeling to it, so many little things that are only lightly touched on and hit all the harder for it. Akiha's own mother is never really mentioned that much, but you feel the weight of how deeply he's affected by Seira's motherly attentions, you see how much Umeda is affected as well, despite that he changes not one bit on the surface. The writing touches me and I realize that I'm horribly dippy for these characters, but it's stories like this that keep me that way, that have that lovely deft touch with the Umeda family and those in the immediate area around them. And. Just. Oh, Akiha. I love him so much. He needs to be fed cookies and Sempai and have Seira take care of him and to always, always be loved. ♥ (Akiha/Umeda.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - Oceanic Blue by aki_omoi - I waffled for a long time, whether to put this with the regular recs or with the shortfics/drabbles link post, but eventually decided on a regular rec for a few reasons. I love it enough to put it here instead, I adore aki_omoi for writing it in the first place (and I've been craving them lately) and, despite the length, it's actually a perfect little shortfic. I want to gripe that it's not longer, but I can't really bring myself to do it, especially not with such a gorgeous Umeda perspective, the way it's something like irritation, something like love, something like confusion, but nothing so simple as any single one of them. I've read this one about five times now and it hits me exactly where I live with these two. ♥ (Akiha/Umeda.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - untitled by Mina Lightstar - *bounces* Again, I know I maybe shouldn't put this with the proper recs, since it's only meant to be a short little thing, but... AkiUme fic! And Mina wrote it for me! And it's fabulous and perfectly paced and there's beautiful characterization in every little inch of this fic, I alternately love Umeda and, god, Akiha and, most of all, I love Mina for writing a brilliantly funny little fic that actually has a surprising amount of real depth to it. Just like the series itself. ♥ (Akiha/Umeda.)

- Hanazakari no Kimichitachi e - Bedside Manner, Instinct, and Motherly Love by Tammaiya - I'm grouping these three short fics together because it's easier to justify recs of them that way. You know, it's hard for me to pick just one of these fics as my favorite, because Tammaiya does such an incredible job with the characters and the situations with them. The first one makes me squeak with glee because of Umeda's crabbiness in the mornings and it's not just a bad mood, you can see past it, but it is still a bad mood, and, oh, Akiha is the cutest thing ever. The second and third fics are also fabulous for this same reason, the characterization is layered, in the way that Umeda is bitchy and crabby on the surface, but there's more going on underneath but you don't have to be told, it's just there in the way he really does give his mother a hug or the way he tells Akiha to go make breakfast if he's going to be up and restless instead of kicking him out. Then there's the second fic. Which may actually be my favorite, despite what I said, because it's got this crystal clear, sharp moment of characterization from Umeda that's one of the best I've read in all of the fandom, even though it lasts for all of, like, three seconds. Not to mention, holy hell, she actually managed to have Akiha/Umeda meet Seishirou/Subaru and it wasn't just believable, it was brilliant. So much going on underneath the surface, so much tension in that meeting, all felt instead of told, and aslkdfjlaskjdfalksjdf, so so good. And the third fic makes me love Seira even more than I already did, which shouldn't have been possible, really, and says everything about Hokuto's relationship with his mother right there. ♥ (Akiha/Umeda, references to Seishirou/Subaru.)

- Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - Peace, Love & Medical Marijuana by mklutz - One of the best things about my birthday was getting MK to write AkiUme fic and it was a fabulous piece. It's fabulous for the little details of it, the way you can feel just as cramped in Akiha's car as Umeda does, all those long limbs of his pressed up against the dash or his head cracking against the door frame one too many times because it's too small, the way you can feel your skin itch right along with him as he bitches about the fabric of the car. But it's also fabulous for the narrative tone, the way Umeda is so cranky throughout the entire piece but never too over the top about it, it's just the right blend of everything he feels for/about/at Akiha and that car. I love that, despite the crabby tone, of course Umeda still gets into it time and again. I love, love the ending because it's all kinds of perfect. Not just for the squeefulness of it (though, that, too ♥) but because Umeda totally would think just like that. And Akiha so, so would. I couldn't stop grinning for the entire fic, I swear. ♥ (Akiha/Umeda.)
