- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Conversing in Syncopation by idiosyn - This fic follows the above (hence for why they're in the outfits they're in), but you don't need to read it to understand this one, they stand on their own. I... I just... for awhile now, probably ever since the pool chapter, I've had this fondness for Mori/Haruhi. I never quite knew how to fit it in with Hunny/Mori, but this fic does a beautiful job of capturing both pairings and the quiet calm that comes from these characters. Well, not Hunny so much, but it is more about Mori/Haruhi than anything else. It's... just the right blend of everything it needed to be, right down to the way you think something bad is happening when Mori yanks her forward and then it turns out to be something completely innocent and you can't get mad because it's Mori and the connection/comparison/contrast the author draws between Mori and Haruhi... I am GOO over this pairing now, yes. (Mori/Haruhi on about the same level as the series.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Oh-Toro, Tea and You by idiosyn - *melts* More of Mori/Haruhi and it has that soft, quiet calm even while still being so Host Club about it and this fic is a lovely example of why the pairing works for me. For all that you don't expect it, Mori is actually a reall well-done character and his relationship with Haruhi is different from most of the others--he doesn't drive her crazy and she understands him surprisingly well and they just... quietly get along and smile at each other in that way and it's adorable when Mori brings over a treat for her and it's a wonderful fic/pairing because it feels complete. I keep expecting something to feel missing with them (even in canon), like they're missing someone else around, but somehow... like with this fic, they feel complete. And, god, the CUTE! So adorable without pushing it too far. I love. ♥ (Mori/Haruhi, but on about the same level as the series.)

- Bleach/Ouran Koukou Host Club - one-line request meme by Sophia - Okay. This is actually a bunch of tiny fics, some Bleach, some Host Club, even a couple of Bleach/Host Club ones, which I normally wouldn't have read or even recommended, but I adore the author's work so much and there are several here, so I'm going to make an exception. I think the one that finally won me over (into recommending, I was enjoying from the very first one) was in the second batch of this comment thread, the twins + Haruhi one, which was just... awesome. The brilliance in such short little fics, the lovely quality of writing and impact managed to get across even in such short little things is beautiful. It's just that much sweeter when she so often wrote pairings I liked (Mori/Haruhi, Kyouya/Haruhi, Twins/Haruhi, even a brilliant Kyouya/Tamaki), but mostly it's the dazzling insights and gorgeous prose. (And, okay. The CCS/Yue one left me quietly melted into a puddle in the corner. What I wouldn't give for more Yuefic from her. *__*) (Several pairings, the only possibly recurring one is Mori/Haruhi.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Girls by artemisgirl - This is a different take on Mori's character than the one I usually see, it verges a little too much on something like jaded for my usual taste, but... something about this fic made it kinda work. He's not angry, he's just... quiet and insightful. He notices things. And then he notices Haruhi and the fic has this really pretty, well-written way of getting at what attracts me to the Mori/Haruhi pairing, the way it's quiet but something very real there, some quiet connection (which is badly phrased on my part, it's not an all-consuming love affair right from the beginning and this fic doesn't try to force it into that, it manages that same level of connection the manga has) and it's just... sweet. Nice. (Not necessarily Mori/Haruhi, but you could read it that way if you liked.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - It's Always The Quiet Ones by Cella - Once again, measuringlife has pointed out a fic I really liked, for a fandom she's just barely gotten into, even! There is not enough Mori/Haruhi fic in the world, much less fic that captures that quiet feel to the pairing, where they're just sort of quietly interested in each other, not a whole lot of words needed. I also liked that the fic included mentions of Hunny several times, because he's such an important part of Mori's life, especially when Mori would feel very guilty about putting someone else first and Hunny is just so... Hunny in that he wants Mori to be happy here. But mostly it's the way Mori and Haruhi are so themselves in these one-sentence batches that I got past my wariness for that format to read the whole thing. Fifty different lines, fifty different aspects for such a wonderful pairing. (Mori/Haruhi.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Five Men Fujioka Haruhi Didn't Kiss (And One She Did) by Sophia P and Aishuu - I have a growing fondness for this sort of fic, the different scenes that are seperate from each other, but are connected through a theme; even when the format is frequently abused (or just plain dull), it's stories like this one that come along and make it sparkle again. The different ways Haruhi might kiss (or be kissed) by the different Host Club members and each of them is lovely and shows little insights into her different relationships with each of them. Not to mention the little insights into the characters themselves--I loved the hint of Honey's deeper personality that shone through with the fic. It doesn't really matter to me which one was real and which one wasn't, I enjoyed them for what they were... even if I do admit to the Mori/Haruhi and Kyouya/Haruhi ones being my favorites. (Kyouya/Haruhi, Kaoru/Haruhi, Tamaki/Haruhi, Honey/Haruhi, Hikaru/Haruhi, Mori/Haruhi.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - The Brilliant Find A Date For Kyouya Plan by Sam Vimes - [ part 01 - part 02 ] - measuringlife has been pestering me to read this fic for days and I'll grant that I've been curious about it because it has my two Host Club OTPs--Kyouya/Tamaki and Mori/Haruhi, I was curious how the two of them could fit into one fic. Plus, the summary reads: Due to a HILARIOUS MISHAP, Tamaki thinks Haruhi is in love with Kyouya, and decides to hatch a brilliant plan to keep Kyouya from Haruhi and show Haruhi how fickle love is. Well, if that's not the Host Club fic I have been desperately waiting for, I don't know what is! And the author did a really fantastic job of capturing the batshit insanity of the Host Club, especially Tamaki's brand of specialness without making any of them feel forced. The pacing of it is just grand, the jokes that feel like they should have only worked visually actually work in text form.

There are a zillion moments I want to squee over. The conversation between Kyouya and Haruhi when she starts to piece things together. The conversation between Hunny and Kyouya, because the Host Club is full of idiots and Hunny is just as insane as the rest of them. The twins being such utter little shits and I love them all the more for it. Haruhi being so beautifully herself, the normal one among the idiots (and, yet, still learning how to handle the twins--implying a threat to tell Kyouya on them was beautiful). Mori being so... direct and calm and quiet and perfect. The fic really does justice to the madcap pace necessary for a story like this, the author knocked this one out of the park. The characterization is brilliant, the humor is brilliant, the writing is brilliant, it's everything it needed to be, and everything I hoped it would be. A part of me thinks that I won't need Host Club fic so desperately anymore because I have a new sense of feeling satisfied by the fandom. (Kyouya/Tamaki, Mori/Haruhi.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - once upon a time by measuringlife - One of the greatest accomplishments of my fannish life is having helped even in some small way to drag measuringlife into the Host Club fandom and make her life Mori/Haruhi. She is a brilliant writer and this fic shows why--there's a peaceful quality to her writing, something that's breathtaking for its loveliness and makes me feel warm and glad all over. She absolutely nails Haruhi's character here, the blend of simple and complex, the way she is so utterly herself and doesn't desire to be anything else. The slowly forming connection between her and Mori is brilliantly done, it's not actually that much past gen, it's like the first glimmerings of something, and that makes this story all the better. The details of this piece are also fabulous, it all comes to life in my mind in lovely, delicate detail and... and... I am writing a terrible rec here. The fic is lovely. The tone of it mirrors the series so wonderfully well. Haruhi is just so Haruhi from head to toe. The details are fabulous, I came away from this fic loving Hunny and the rest of the Host Club even more, too. (Very light Mori/Haruhi, but it's more a Haruhi character piece.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Snap by mirax_took_ - *chokes* Omg, this was brilliantly funny. The writing is smooth and clean, the characterization is solid and very much in line with the characters, but it's the painfully sharp dialogue and situations that Haruhi finds herself in because of the club's wackiness yet again that's the greatest thing about this. The twins are fabulous especially, such devilish little shits when they're teasing Haruhi and trying to get a rise out of her. And. And. Tamaki. Omg, Tamaki stole the show. And then there was the ending and-- yeah. Brilliant fic. (Implications of one-sided twins/Haruhi, Tamaki/Haruhi, and Mori/Haruhi, but about on the level of canon.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - You & Me by namistai8 - It's been ages since I read any Mori/Haruhi fic, but they are still one of my favorite pairings from this series and its fic like this that are why. It's a bit of a complicated relationship between Mori, Haruhi, and Hunny, yet something very simple all at the same time, which this author captures in a gorgeous style. The writing from Mori's perspective is lovely, it's so very much like the character, straightforward and yet there's still so much subtlety there. The way he slowly starts to feel something for Haruhi, the way he's always been protectice of Hunny (the author's take on this is fantastic, it so closely mirrors my own thoughts on how Mori views Hunny) and even how he views the possibility of Hunny/Haruhi. It's a reflective piece and it's just beautiful to read. (Mori/Haruhi, a little bit Mori/Hunny/Haruhi but not really.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Between Us by namistai8 - This is another lovely Mori/Haruhi fic by the same author, it has the same beautifully written straightforward-yet-still-subtle tone that works so well with the characters, it's still that same dyanmic, where it's not precisely romantic, yet they obviously have started to have feelings for each other. I love that Hunny is also still such a part of the picture, because Mori still thinks about him a lot, I love that this piece is set during the time when they went to visit Haruhi at her place, I love that it uses a canon event and gives it even more depth and uses it to show the beginnings of their feelings for each other. It just. It makes me so happy to read fic like this. ♥ (Mori/Haruhi.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Falter by namistai8 - This is a very nice story about Mori's developing feelings for Haruhi, the way it sends him into a bit of a quiet tailspin, how badly he feels about it, how confused he is, yet there's still this sort of calm on the surface of the water. It's a nice insight into Mori's character as much as it is a nice insight into the Mori/Haruhi relationship. The inclusion of Hunny and his effect on Mori's life, the way it's not exactly what everyone else thinks, yet Hunny is still obviously very important to him, it fits nicely with how I view the characters and their dynamics. (Mori/Haruhi.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Cold Season by Streets of Fire - disordered_mess recommended a bunch of Host Club fics and this is the first one I clicked on and I am utterly charmed by it. It's just a small moment, it's not really even anything beyond what you would see it canon, Tamaki being Tamaki and the twins being bratty (especially about the thick sweater Haruhi is wearing) and Mori is just as calm and gentle as ever. It's such a cute moment, half-shippy and half-not and it suits Mori/Haruhi perfectly. <3 (Mori/Haruhi.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Dream a Little Dream by stagemystic - Another rec from disordered_mess, it's a lovely little Mori/Haruhi fic set in the greater antics of the Host Club. The author's Haruhi is very solid and in character, she's not apathetic or cold, she's just straight-forward and has to deal with the Host Club rich bastards. There's something almost gentle about this fic, even when she's interacting with Tamaki and the twins and Hunny and Kyouya. And when Haruhi's tired from too much late-night studying and she's put with Mori during the next day of the host club, it's really sweet and the author does a very nice job with how they're quiet around each other, but not dull. It's understated (especially in comparison to the rest of the crazy around them) but utterly adorable and the author makes that work. (Mori/Haruhi.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Babylon by TeaForRevenge - Sometimes she finds herself thinking that perhaps, just perhaps, Mori might be able to act as an interpreter to her. Another rec from disordered_mess and I think this might be one of my favorites from the fandom in quite some time. The author uses the theme of Haruhi not quite speaking the same language as the others, she doesn't understand their world just as they don't really understand hers, and it comes across beautifully, you can feel that mild frustration and out-of-place sensation she must go through a lot. And then Mori sort of understands her a lot more than she expected and when I recount it here, it sounds kind of lame, but the author makes it work, it's subtle and fantastic in the way they just sort of calmly gravitate towards each other and work well together. This was lovely. (Mori/Haruhi.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Talkative by TeaForRevenge - Another rec from disordered_mess and this one plays on the way that Mori and Haruhi communicate without words, without most people even realizing they're "talking" to each other. A look here, a tilt of the head there, a quirk of the lips, a drop of the shoulders, all these things are little moments of communication between Mori and Haruhi. I liked the way the author wrote them, her take on the characters is interesting here and it's a very sweet read. (Mori/Haruhi.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Dumb by Soozen - This is a little sadder than I usually like to go for, at least with Haruhi, but what makes me like it anyway is that the tone is very straightforward and yet still gentle without being squishy, it fits well with Haruhi's character. It's a short piece about Haruhi's life with the Host Club and how she doesn't quite fit in with them, even when she pretends she can, and it's an interesting little insightful piece. (Mori/Haruhi.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - The Greatest Gift by zetsubouteki - This is a short little fic set on Haruhi's birthday, where she gets a surprise party and several gifts. Not much really happens, you don't even know what the other gifts are or spend much time on the party. Instead, it's just a quiet focus in on the Mori/Haruhi relationship and the simple gift that he gives her and how something so practical means more to her than any other extravagant gift. It was very cute. (Mori/Haruhi.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Come Inside by Urei Sachi - As I was reading this, in a way, it struck me as a fic that illustrated why Kyouya/Haruhi is such a difficult pairing to make work, especially when you remove the host club setting from around them and put them into an alternate storyline, and yet still shows why there's a certain connection and fascination there. Perhaps I've also been reading too many AUs lately, so I hardly blinked at this one being set in a universe where Haruhi grew up with the Morinozuka family (as her mother was their lawyer) and then she goes off to college, but the author writes so beautifully and tells it almost like a fairytale, along with accompanying storybook snippets to frame the scenes, while still keeping everyone with such spot-on characterizations that it's hardly that much different from reading regular Host Club fic. I absolutely adore the author's Haruhi, she's straightforward without being too oblivious or uncaring, there's a certain something that I can believe would attract all of these people to her. The set-up of the storyline here is actually interesting, it doesn't spend too much time unnecessarily world building (in part because circumstances are largely similar to the canon storyline) and yet the author seems to have a good grip on what she wants from it. It's just a really well-written and highly interesting AU, both for Haruhi insights and the Kyouya/Haruhi relationship. (Kyouya/Haruhi, Mori/Haruhi.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Haze by TaintedWolf - This was a short, sweet little Mori/Haruhi fic and what I liked about it was that... even though it was sweet and kind of sappy, it was the kind where I could still see them as Mori and Haruhi, just a little older and more settled into their relationship. It's a quiet piece, Haruhi is half-asleep the entire time and it's about the sense of warmth and comfort, the author doing a very sweet job of it. I liked this one. (Mori/Haruhi.)

Ouran Koukou Host Club: Six Days of Worry; or How Laundry Makes Everything Better by treeflamingo - And, as if the other Host Club fics weren't enough, now there's one with Mori and Haruhi? Excellent. And while I normally ship them pretty hard (and was indeed reading that into the fic, despite that the author wasn't intending it so much as leaving it up to the reader, so if you're not a fan of the pairing, this really is pure gen friendship), sometimes it's still nice to read a fic where it's not about romance, where it's just about friendship and companionship. One the neatest things about this fic was the look into Mori's head, how his friendship with Hunny works and how he sees the rest of the world and how thoughts filter through his head and how he sees Haruhi, I really liked the author's voice for him. And I adored the companionable quiet between the two of them here, it fits so well with the kind of moments they get in canon and it's just. The writing is so lovely. (This is gen, but if you like Mori/Haruhi, you should like this.)

Ouran Koukou Host Club: Plastic Pieces by idiosyn - Well. Apparently, somehow I missed this fic until disordered-mess pointed it out recently. orz Which is too bad, because it was a really wonderful, sweet Mori+Haruhi piece where they do nothing but play chess and yet... yet it captures everything that I love about the pairing. They don't need to be flashy (the rest of the host club does that around them) to be interesting, there's a quiet charm about them instead. I loved this one a lot. ♥ (It could be Mori/Haruhi, it could be purely gen.)
