- Ouran Koukou Host Club - untitled by Tammaiya - I admit, I probably only read this Tamaki/Haruhi fic because it was done by Tammaiya and I luffs her and trust her and because she's really good. And this. This was just so GREAT because it captures that feeling from the manga, where Tamaki is totally a loveable RETARD and Haruhi is just so... Haruhi and you can't not love her. There were a ton of little details in here, the kind that just popped the whole thing right into crystal clarity in my head, from Tamaki trying to get Haruhi to wear lip gloss to the way he reacts when she's her usual self and just... asd;lfkjadl;fjas, this was so much love. *shakes fist at for making me read Tamaki/Haruhi* (Tamaki/Haruhi, though, it's on the level of the series itself.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Viola Grown by Sam Vimes - Part of me really wants to quibble with a few details (like addressing people by their first names when they've just met) or grump about how it's obviously based on the anime rather than the manga or how it seems to ignore the Kyouya/Tamaki friendship (but I suspect that's the anime's fault more than anything), but I just... I can't, not when the writing is smooth and polished and it achieves what the author set out to do. The OCs are actually interesting to read about in this fic, the whole story unfolds much like the layered mystery that the author and Kyouya refer to, the characterization is both subtle and sharp. The reason for Kyouya and Haruhi being at the same college is simple and perfect (something I was expecting to grouse over, but instead went HARTS at), Kyouya's... refinement... well... evil refinement without being truly evil, was gorgeously done. And, okay, I have a huge soft spot for Kyouya/Haruhi and in this particular fic I could buy that it would happen this way. That's what's lovely about this entire fic, that it's well-written and well-characterized and just good. Host Club fandom kind of lacks in that. (Kyouya/Haruhi, Tamaki/Haruhi.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - echo symmetry by ending tragedy - This fic isn't going to be for everyone. It's both short and relies heavily on imagery that you have to interpret to tell what's going on. Normally, I find fic like this pretentious, but this time... something about it seemed elegant and proper for this series/pairing. Or maybe I just wanted a Kyouya/Tamaki/Haruhi fic badly enough that I wanted to see something elegant in it. Either way, I found this to be rather lovely and nice to know that I'm not the only one who has interest in these three together. (Kyouya/Tamaki/Haruhi.)

- Bleach/Ouran Koukou Host Club - one-line request meme by Sophia - Okay. This is actually a bunch of tiny fics, some Bleach, some Host Club, even a couple of Bleach/Host Club ones, which I normally wouldn't have read or even recommended, but I adore the author's work so much and there are several here, so I'm going to make an exception. I think the one that finally won me over (into recommending, I was enjoying from the very first one) was in the second batch of this comment thread, the twins + Haruhi one, which was just... awesome. The brilliance in such short little fics, the lovely quality of writing and impact managed to get across even in such short little things is beautiful. It's just that much sweeter when she so often wrote pairings I liked (Mori/Haruhi, Kyouya/Haruhi, Twins/Haruhi, even a brilliant Kyouya/Tamaki), but mostly it's the dazzling insights and gorgeous prose. (And, okay. The CCS/Yue one left me quietly melted into a puddle in the corner. What I wouldn't give for more Yuefic from her. *__*) (Several pairings, the only possibly recurring one is Mori/Haruhi.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - one-line fic request meme by Sophia - Like the one I recommended above, this is a collection of short little one-line ficlets that I'm making an exception for because there were several written and they positively sparkle with vibrancy and love for this series. Sophia is brilliant at making me smile or making me laugh or making my fangirl heart turn over because she gets at these brilliant little insights or touching moments between characters that I love so dearly. I just quietly enjoy these. (Several pairings, but no real themes.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Ouran Drabbles by Celeste - [ part 01 - part 02 - part 03 ] - I will grant that the first one of these started out a little stiff in the writing. But the characterization and the spirit of the series are there. And the Mori fic had this great ending line that totally made me do one of those, "Pfbbtt" noises when you're not expecting to laugh. And then the second one was cute Kyouya/Tamaki interaction and there was a kiss and Celeste was warming up to the characters and the series I think. And the third one was cute and fun... until I got to the ending and it was just the most perfect picture ever and I suspected it right before it happened and then... the last line... I honest to god had to turn away from the computer and howl with laughter for a good thirty seconds. It's just. It hit me so perfectly. I could so perfectly picture it and it would totally happen. And that's what I love about these three drabbles (and look forward to more with), because Celeste has that way of finding the point of these drabbles and making the shortfic format work for her. (Some implications of pairings, especially Kyouya/Tamaki, but not really.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Between by chaineddove - I admit, I tend to view the Kaoru/Hikaru relationship a little differently than this author, I feel that Hikaru is the one who holds on tighly and Kaoru the one takes the first steps towards growing up, but... at the same time, I can't really argue with the fic because it's written well with the scenes from the series and the case presented in the fic is really well-done. The writing itself is lovely, the way the twins are in their own little world even as they interact with everyone else, the way Haruhi just sort of carelessly crashed into their world, the way I could feel the heartache from Kaoru... who is one of my favorite characters from the series, actually, so to have his emotions shine through in this fic for me was a treat. It's a lovely story about the twins as children, about them growing up, and about the way things slowly start to change. And one of the best things is that I can completely imagine all the antics they got up to, every example that the author used to illustrate the different stages of their lives (which were really effect as well!) were ones I could completely imagine having happened in their past. (Kaoru/Hikaru, Hikaru/Haruhi, not quite safe for work.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - The Hanged Man by Ria - I'm always frightfully wary of Kyouya/Tamaki/Haruhi fic because it's such a delicate balance and so hard to get right without being almost dismissive of what makes the various pairings work. I have a strong love of all three of them together, but it is not my combination of choice. This fic managed to have me not running for the hills, which is a feat in and of itself, much less with lovely writing. It's difficult to avoid the Everyone Loves Haruhi trap in a fic that's set from her perspective (and, thus, going to have to strongly lean towards her relationships with Kyouya and Tamaki) and I think I'm writing a half-assed rec for a fic that most people are probably going to find very well-written. It's lovely on a technical level and I find nothing to grip about in terms of the characterization. I'm certainly glad I read it and even more glad that I'm not the only fan of the idea of a threesome between the characters. The author balances out an actual threesome in the fic very well and the writing is lovely, delicate, and even deft in many places. Don't let my soapboxing fool you, it's one of the good Host Club fics. (Kyouya/Tamaki/Haruhi. Possibly a light R rating.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - There's Something About Mori... by grayout - I'm often a little leery of fics like this, but I've really liked the author's Final Fantasy VIII fic, so I gave it a shot. Especially since I like Mori's character a lot and it started out with a lovely section on Haruhi's thoughts re: Mori. The author does a good job of not only writing well, but in getting what this array of different characters would think about Mori's character. The way the author drew connections between them all was nice, each one offered little insights into both Mori and the others, the little details working quite well. I'm particularily fond of the Mori/Haruhi one, of course, but I actually really liked the way the twins didn't forget about Haruhi and the way the author made genuinely natural-feeling connections with Kyouya and Tamaki. ( Everyone/Mori, maybe?)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Five Men Fujioka Haruhi Didn't Kiss (And One She Did) by Sophia P and Aishuu - I have a growing fondness for this sort of fic, the different scenes that are seperate from each other, but are connected through a theme; even when the format is frequently abused (or just plain dull), it's stories like this one that come along and make it sparkle again. The different ways Haruhi might kiss (or be kissed) by the different Host Club members and each of them is lovely and shows little insights into her different relationships with each of them. Not to mention the little insights into the characters themselves--I loved the hint of Honey's deeper personality that shone through with the fic. It doesn't really matter to me which one was real and which one wasn't, I enjoyed them for what they were... even if I do admit to the Mori/Haruhi and Kyouya/Haruhi ones being my favorites. (Kyouya/Haruhi, Kaoru/Haruhi, Tamaki/Haruhi, Honey/Haruhi, Hikaru/Haruhi, Mori/Haruhi.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Snap by mirax_took_ - *chokes* Omg, this was brilliantly funny. The writing is smooth and clean, the characterization is solid and very much in line with the characters, but it's the painfully sharp dialogue and situations that Haruhi finds herself in because of the club's wackiness yet again that's the greatest thing about this. The twins are fabulous especially, such devilish little shits when they're teasing Haruhi and trying to get a rise out of her. And. And. Tamaki. Omg, Tamaki stole the show. And then there was the ending and-- yeah. Brilliant fic. (Implications of one-sided twins/Haruhi, Tamaki/Haruhi, and Mori/Haruhi, but about on the level of canon.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club/CLAMP Horitsuba Academy - Spectacular, Spectacular! by Tammaiya - The Horitsuba drama is so completely on crack that it somehow makes perfect sense to cross it over with Host Club. The two series are so... completely over the top in the best way possible that they blend together nicely here, the way the author is so... grand and romantic and sparkling about all of it is a great tone to take here. And there are tons of fun little details--my favorite is Kyouya and Yuuko having a conversation, how could that not be completely great? ♥ (As the notes say... hints of Doumeki/Watanuki, Kurogane/Fye, Syaoran/Sakura, Watanuki --> Himawari, Kyouya/Tamaki, Tamaki --> Haruhi, and Tetsuya/Ritsu.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Day Seven of Twenty Eight by Corazon del Fuego - I have a thing about Kyouya/Tamaki/Haruhi and I used to wonder if there were only ever two of us on the planet. So I have an attraction towards fic that pairs the three of them up together and want to give it a chance and occasionally this nets me something I really like. There was something almost sort of sweet about this fic, a sleepy morning feel combined with Haruhi's practical nature that fit together neatly. There's an extravagance to the settings around her, so much lavishness in the place they live and the clothes she has to choose from, yet it never gets away from the straightforward quality to Haruhi's character, it was really sort of neat for that. Also, the ending was totally goo-inspiring and the Kyouya and Tamaki snuggling in the bed after she rises early totally made me go, "Awwww." ....a lot. (Kyouya/Haruhi/Tamaki.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Taboo by mirax_took_ - Oh, now, this was just delightful. The writing is lovely and smooth, the opening of the scene with Haruhi and the twins wondering who on earth Tamaki is talking to on the phone... well, the twins wondering and Haruhi blithely going on about her business... and then. The way the author writes Tamaki's speech patterns and flowery words! They're perfect. They're bursting with romance and sparkles and flowers, but not so ridiculously that they're over the top even for a character like Tamaki, instead it actually feels like what he would say. And then the ending with everyone and Kyouya was utterly delightful. I loved it. (Tamaki/?, sort of.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Nimble Fingers by TeaForRevenge - Another rec from disordered_mess and this time it's a Hunny fic, which is a really interesting look at the character and his love of sweet things and how growing up in the family that he did affected him and how he "steals" things and how everything is almost coated in this sugary, happy sort of tone yet has these genuine serious undercurrents to everything. That is the Hunny I read in the manga, especially when he's very aware of what's going on around him and what he's doing with Haruhi, even when most people don't notice or dismiss him because he looks so cute. The use of cookies and stealing them throughout the fic is very well done, I really quite liked this author's take on the character. (Some Hunny/Haruhi, but it's mostly a gen fic.)

- Ouran Koukou Host Club - Reverence by TeaForRevenge - Another rec from disordered_mess and I read it after Nimble Fingers (read a bunch of them in a row, actually) and what I really love about this fic is that it captures Hunny so well. Hunny is a rather complicated character to get right I often feel, his shota personality isn't exactly false, but it's not exactly true, either. He does so much of it on purpose, he's very aware of the effect it has, and there's an actual person under there and this fic... this fic does a lot of justice to that. Her Hunny has this want of something, always wanting the next present to be opened and the author parallels and constrasts that beautifully with his relationship with Haruhi. It's a surprisingly subtle look at Hunny's character and I really liked it for that, it's about things underneath the bright and shining surface, which is entirely appropriate for Hunny. (Some Hunny/Haruhi.)

Ouran Koukou Host Club: the nature of affection by readerofasaph - Apparently I'm in a mood for Host Club fic today. And Mori is one of those characters that surprised me by becoming one of my favorites when he wasn't the kind that I usually expected to fall for. But fics like this really sort of help that along, because there's something so... sensible about him here and maybe that's not even the right word. Pragmatic, maybe. The tone of the fic and the look into his head, how he views the people around him (pre-series, I think?) feels very spot-on, the directness and no-nonsense tone that the whole fic has works so well for him. This was a delightful read and I loved it for Mori's character. (This is purely gen, but if you like Hunny/Mori, you'll probably like this.)
