Junjou Romantica: Cherished by MythNLynx - You know, I love fics that deal with Hiroki's past (as in, how many people he's been with before Nowaki) because it makes sense to me for Hiroki's character, but also because it's fun to play with when it comes to Nowaki's reactions, especially when it's done like this short fic does--Nowaki wants to know if he's as good as Hiroki's previous lovers, wants to know how much more catching up he still needs to do. And it's so adorable and positive and Hiroki's reaction is so delightful (all the more so because it's hard for him to find the right words that won't hurt Nowaki's feelings) that I could just eat this up forever. (Nowaki/Hiroki.)

Junjou Romantica: Where the Heart Is by Lady Nara - Oh, I really liked this piece. It's a short story about the two people that have made their way into Hiroki's guarded places, when he was younger and Akihiko shared his spot in the forest, then when he's older and Nowaki manages to get inside his heart. I love that Hiroki still works himself up into such a state and the stress is just about overwhelming, but it's Nowaki being... Nowaki, supportive and believing in him and just persistent and kind enough that Hiroki feels better. It's a simple piece, but one of those that shows exactly why they work and why they're so darling together. <3 (Nowaki/Hiroki.)

Junjou Romantica: Catch 22 by Avarice - This was also delightful! I love stories that deal with two characters who can't announce their relationship to the world (less because they're gay, more because Hiroki doesn't want to announce anything EVER), when there's that awkwardness on one side and the OHO LET'S SEE WHAT YOU'VE BEEN SAYING ABOUT ME from the other side, because there's a third party who doesn't realize they're together, but knows the first character is in a relationship., pretend that was structured at least somewhat well. Anyway, this author wrote a delicious scene with a co-worker of Nowaki's not realizing he's in a relationship with Hiroki and invites herself to their breakfast and there wasn't the embarrasment squick I was expecting, instead it was delightful. All the more so because Hiroki was so very Hiroki about it. It was charming and wonderful, I'm glad to have read it this afternoon. (Nowaki/Hiroki.)

Junjou Romantica: Mistletoe by Kumorastar - This is just a cute little piece with Nowaki bringing some papers to Hiroki's office and it's around Christmas time, so there's discussion of what Hiroki wants for a present and then there's mistletoe and it's all very cute. It's hard to talk about because not much happens in it, but somehow the author still makes it a satisfying piece--the little touches with Hiroki muttering to himself or enjoying the way students practically leap out of his way as he stalks down the hallway or Nowaki being vaguely annoyed when Hiroki does anything for anyone else, even if he knows Hiro-san loves him. It was fun! (Nowaki/Hiroki.)

Junjou Romantica: Three Days by Kumorastar - I'll admit that this fic really needs a third part at least, because it's all build-up right now, but. The first chapter has this great moment with MIyagi, Hiroki, and Akihiko that I loved so much I couldn't resist recommending it right away. (Though, be warned that it doesn't look like it's going to be finished any time soon.) And the second chapter had Hiroki and Misaki in the same room! I... I am apparently really easy for anything that makes Hiroki's life difficult and/or super awesome, especially when the author is clearly having a ball with it, too. (Nowaki/Hiroki, Usagi/Misaki, both implied.)

Junjou Romantica: To Write a Tragic Love Story by Qatari - [ part 01 - part 02 - part 03 - part 04 - part 05 ][Note: These posts are locked, but the comm is freely joinable. You can find the fic on FFNET as well, but chapter 5 is not posted there.] I stayed up far too late reading this story because I just could not put it down until I'd devoured all of the available chapters and then had to force myself to just go to bed already. I'll warn ahead of time that it's an unfinished fic and, having been half a year since the last one was posted, it may very well not be finished. I'm clawing the walls a little over that, because I want the resolution so badly, but what's available of the story so far is just so... asd;lfkjasl;jkfffffffff I have been pining for this idea for awhile and I was even discussing the situation surrounding it a few days before I stumbled over this fic--whether or not Akihiko knew how Hiroki felt about him for all those years. This fic deals with that and all the fallout that would happen if Akihiko were planning to use the events of the year Nowaki went to America in a novel and Hiroki exploded all over him, revealing his previous feelings and the mess that Akihiko never even noticed.

As cliche as the idea could have been, this fic hit all the right notes for me! The reveal was incredibly satisfying, making me feel for both characters--my fangirl heart belongs to Hiroki in this fandom, but I don't blame Akihiko because it's not like he did it on purpose. The fic reflects that beautifully, that it's not really anyone's fault, all while making it rather painful to read at points because both of them have their "fault" in this situation and you hurt for both of them. But the best part is that this Hiroki characterization is fantastic. Well, all of the characters are, but especially Hiroki and Misaki, as the friendship between Hiroki and Akihiko is strained and their lovers try to encourage them to mend fences. There are so many scenes where I just about started giggling aloud at the humor, there were so many scenes where I just wanted to hug both Hiroki and Akihiko both, there were so many scenes where I was a little breathless at the sheer depth of emotion, there were so many scenes where I was impressed by how well the author just nailed the characters' voices and the insights into their characters. It's an idea I've been dying to have played with, all executed in a way that I think really does justice to everything that would unravel because of this, all while not making it pointlessly angsty. It's a good story, in the vein of the manga itself. (Nowaki/Hiroki, Usagi/Misaki, references to Usagi/Hiroki and Usagi/Takahiro.)

Junjou Romantica: Kamjou Dates a woman by Qatari - I was wary of this fic at first because the idea wasn't something I was sure I'd be interested in? The idea of Hiroki having to date Risako for awhile promised lolz, but in a 40,000+ word story, could you really find that much ground to cover? And I think the title is a little misleading for that. Yeah, that's what starts everything going and that's what the first half of the fic is--the hilarity of backing Hiroki into a corner where he has to go on a date with her, even though he's not exactly interested in women--but it moves on from there as well. It's about a lot more than that, centering on the relationships between these characters (especially the Egoist and Terrorist pairings) all with Hiroki pretty much at the center--which I am totally all over, both as a fan of the character, but also because it reflects the manga itself, how Hiroki is the one that connects everyone. I love the friendship that develops between Hiroki and Risako, I love the issues that come up in his relationship with Nowaki because of it (asd;lfkja;slk I love Nowaki/Hiroki so much in this fic, all the more so because it can be sweet and they still have so many things to work on), I love Hiroki getting pulled into Miyagi's situation against his will. It's one of those fics that feels like more of the manga, more of the characters I love, more of the situations they find themselves in, which is why I read fanfic in the first place.

I will warn ahead of time that I'm not sure the style is going to be for everyone, because the author uses a lot of elipses in the dialogue, both at the beginning and the end of sentences. That might drive some people to distraction, but I found I didn't mind it, it added a Japanese feel to the dialogue for me and I stopped noticing them after awhile. It helps that the author has a really strong grip on the characterization and the various issues that come up--when Nowaki finally bursts out with one of the problems between them, it's dead on for them. Hiroki's crankiness yet being a basically decent person, Miyagi being a teasing bastard but actually a caring person, Nowaki being a coy fucker at times, Shinobu being a pissy little teen who is actually kind of hilarious, the author nails all of this really well. I loved this fic to the point that... I may have made some cranky noises when I realized I'd gotten to chapter 13 and there wasn't going to be anymore for awhile. 6__6 (Nowaki/Hiroki, Miyagi/Shinobu, references to Miyagi/Risako, Hiroki/Risako, etc.)

Junjou Romantica: If You Mean It. by allira_dream - This fic also has many things that I enjoy about this fandom! Hiroki being drunk! Misunderstandings! Nowaki being a little frustrated because Hiroki doesn't actually say anything! The writing of the piece is lovely and it has that edge of awkwardness and hurt that any fic dealing with Hiroki and Nowaki's lack of communication should--because they do still suck at it. I love that it's a believable (for those two, especially Hiroki being... well, Hiroki) situation and yet it doesn't drag on forever. And I love it for having a scene where Nowaki gets Hiroki to actually say something for once, while not drunk. Bonus points for porn, too! This is one of those fics that I just wrote a terrible rec for, but that I very heartily recommend. (Nowaki/Hiroki, a light NC-17.)

Junjou Romantica: Hiro-san is complicated, or: Nowaki thinks too much by Eike - Oh, another thing I love in fandom! Jealousy fic. Especially the category of making things worse by assuming the other would be jealous and stirring them up. But, then, with Hiroki, you can never be too safe, really. I love the idea of them running into Nowaki's ex-girlfriend and it actually goes really well, because that's totally how I saw Nowaki's past relationships as well. And I love Nowaki trying to decipher Hiroki's non-reaction to the whole situation, the way both of them were spot-on in characterization, and it's just so... that's the Egoist pairing for you. I'd read fic like this pretty much forever. ♥ (Nowaki/Hiroki.)

Junjou Romantica: Going to Pieces by Penguin - So, Nowaki discovers Hiroki's porn stash by accident. And reacts in a typical Nowaki fashion. And I... I can't help it, I love him all the more for kind of blowing a gasket over it, because it's such a Nowaki thing to do. I also really like how it's their same old issue--that they're kind of crap at actually communicating with each other--but it's not an angsty piece and, of course, they find a way to resolve it and make me smile at the same time. <3 (Nowaki/Hiroki.)

Junjou Romantica: His Hiro-san by Faye-Naruse - This was adorable! Sometimes pure fluff works for certain pairings and, when you set a fic from Nowaki's point of view, it works for these two as well. It's Nowaki thinking about all the little things he loves about Hiroki, all the moments that make Hiroki such a fun character for the readers and things that Nowaki loves him for rather than in spite of. It's the kind of fic that just makes me feel all warm and fluffy on the inside, which I need sometimes. (Nowaki/Hiroki.)

Junjou Romantica: Christmas Delights by Penguin - There are two things I love about this fic. The first was the almost gentle, sort of peaceful feeling of Nowaki and Hiroki at Christmas, as Hiroki thinks of how bright and happy Nowaki is, how he's so different from the Akihiko they've just spotted coming out of a store at Christmas. The whole piece is just this moment in time that's perfect, it says so much about the characters and where they are. The second thing I love about this fic is the imagery at the end--when Hiroki reaches out to Nowaki because he can't do it with words and Nowaki understands what he means. So he promptly describes just exactly what he's going to do Hiroki when they get home and, ngl, I'd do a lot for that particular fic because those are totally my kinks. (Nowaki/Hiroki, brief mention of Usagi/Misaki.)

Junjou Romantica: Junjou Fluff by Qatari - I'll warn for a few things ahead of time with this fic--I think it could have withstood a lot of tightening up, but most of it is in the variety where the author would simply get better with a little experience. There are times when the speaker is unclear in a group scene, there are times when the writing falls into cliche or lampshades itself a bit too much (all the talk of "uke day" or "seme day" is something I cannot imagine flying with Hiroki), the situations often get rather over the top, there's a lot of elipses in the formatting, etc. To a degree, some of these things are almost inevitable when you have a fic that's almost 200,000 words and I don't mean to seem unduly harsh. This is not meant to be a backhanded rec; more that I feel I should mention that it reads like one of the author's older stories and I took it in that vein. Because I read this fic almost exclusively over the last week or so, putting everything else on hold (fic-wise) because I could not put it down. The author has this incredible comedic timing and sense for dialogue with the Junjou Romantica characters that was amazing and downright addicting. I would constantly read just one more chapter--despite that each chapter is long enough to have been a signifigant fic on its own! And, despite their length, one chapter would turn into two, would turn into three, and I eventually just had to force myself to go to bed.

One of the best things about the fic is the length of story, that it covers a lot of ground and yet never feels like you're left unsatisfied; the pacing is just right for each storyline, whether it's Hiroki being an angsty moron and getting himself sick enough to land in the hospital or any of the given couples needing to work out their issues or the group trip abroad and the antics they get into there. It's half about the craziness that results from everything and half about having these characters connect with each other, both in the romantic couples and in forming bonds of friendship. I admit, I am mostly in the fandom for Hiroki and that's definitely what I took away most from this fic, but I think you'll enjoy it if you like any of the couples, because the author is very good about balancing all three couples and building on the friendships. I think pretty much every character interacted with every other character at some point!

Still more beyond that, the author managed to keep things fresh, while still staying true to the spirt of the characters--it's hard to not just neatly resolve everything after a couple of chapters, yet without feeling like the reset button was always being hit. That's one of the things I crave most in fanfic--I like progress, but maybe not everything all at once, which this fic did wonderfully! I got the feeling that Nowaki and Hiroki, for example, were a lot further along than they were at the beginning of the story, but they were still going to have problems because they weren't perfect at actually TALKING TO EACH OTHER, no matter how far they'd come. And as;ldkfjalskj Hiroki and Akihiko's friendship! And Misaki finding out that Usagi-san's friend was Demon Kamijou! And the friendship blooming between Misaki and Shinobu! All things that I love to see in an epic length fic. But also, like the author's other work, you can feel her strong grip on the characters and how they all work, by themselves or with the other characters, making them all so much fun to read about. And now... I'm not sure what I'm going to do with myself now that I've finish my epic-length Junjou Romantica fic. :< (Usagi/Misaki, Nowaki/Hiroki, Miyagi/Shinobu, references to other potential ships like Akihiko/Hiroki, but this is firmly rooted in canon.)

Junjou Romantica: A Quarter Past Midnight by deecherrywolf - For as much fic as I've read for the Egoist pairing, there's not a whole lot of the trope-like ideas that haven't come up before (which isn't to say I don't still eat them up like delicious candy because, oh, boy, do I ever) and this fic kind of surprised me for that! I don't think I've seen fic set in the time before they move in together, where Hiroki goes to Nowaki's apartment instead, which is a lot smaller and spends the night there. But this fic was really charming for it, the difference in location and what it says about Hiroki seeking him out, even when he's till just as grumpy as ever. <3 (Nowaki/Hiroki.)

Junjou Romantica: Get Off Me, You Idiot by Peak in Darien - You know what another of my favorite things ever is? When Hiroki is so completely gone on Nowaki and yet he doesn't even realize it, rather forcefully coming up against having to admit this to himself, while Nowaki just takes it all in stride. It's a bit of a simple fic, but the magic is in how well the author (despite the slight AU of the timeline) works the Nowaki/Hiroki relationship, how they just work together so well and how charming they are and how you can feel how ridiculously in love they both are. It's just... a lovely piece. (Nowaki/Hiroki, slightly NSFW.)

Junjou Romantica: Your softness beckons me by deecherrywolf - So, Hiroki is always going to be my favorite Junjou Romantica character, but... I have such the tremendous soft spot for Nowaki and fics like this highlight why. Part of it is that he's just so ridiculously in love with Hiroki, that he sees Hiroki, that, well, how can I not love someone who loves Hiroki that much? But the other part of it is the way Nowaki loves so openly and completely, the way it's such a deep well of love for the person who is most dear to him. Sure, the porn in this fic was nice to have, but I think I loved it even more for the Nowaki characterization. ....not that the porn wasn't still nice, mind. (Nowaki/Hiroki, NC-17.)

Junjou Romantica: Who Wrote the Book of Love by MidniteMarauder - Another favorite of mine is when Nowaki gets into Hiroki's books, especially those books, the ones that are total trash and yet Hiroki can't bear to get rid of or, you know, not keep buying them. I love Nowaki in this fic a lot, so dearly in love with Hiroki, so sweet when they're first moving into their new apartment, so genuinely wanting to help organize Hiroki's books, and he doesn't even mean to stumble onto Hiroki's stash. Hiroki himself is fantastic here as well, so much bluster and ranting and constant headaches and in the middle of such a difficult life, you guys. I love that it's not just about Nowaki getting into Hiroki's books (though, that part is super hilarious), but also about the little moments, like when Akihiko first asks Hiroki to look over his Jun'ai novels or when Hiroki isn't feeling well one day and Nowaki gets him to lie down, even though all the books are still scattered about or the ending when Hiroki catches Nowaki and kind of has a fit about it. Which, I guess, is the thing about this fic--I loved it enough to write a flailing, incoherent rec about it, didn't I? orz (Nowaki/Hiroki, somewhat NSFW.)

Junjou Romantica: Aftermath by Hemera4 - When I read the first chapter of this fic as it was posted, I wanted to quibble with some of the characterization--I don't think Nowaki would leave so easily/just like that, I think Hiroki would have a harder time getting over his pride, etc--and I think that's something I'd still want to warn for, that it's somewhat rushed in the beginning. At the same time, when I finished the chapter that had just been posted, I did the ants in my pants dance because, holy crap, I wanted the next chapter now. I wanted to see where this was going! I was genuinely affected by the heartache that Nowaki and Hiroki were putting themselves through again! I kind of wanted to smack them because, yes, they are stupid enough to let this shit get betwen them again! The writer has an otherwise really solid grip on the characters and chapter three is all kinds of really satisfying resolution, making the wait between the chapters totally worth it. I admit, part of what hits home for me with this fic is that it's an issue I love to see played with (Nowaki's jealousy that Hiroki's feelings for Akihiko linger even to this day) and I am all about the whole plot of one character leaving so that the other person has to wake up and go after them and put things back together. I read this fic knowing that of course there would be a happy ending and that's what made it so fun for me, because it didn't lessen the impact of Nowaki's hurt or Hiroki's desperation, instead I just sat back and enjoyed the show. This is the kind of thing I love, shut up. XD (Nowaki/Hiroki.)

Junjou Romantica: Why Now? by CheyanneChika - I'm not sure what made me pick up this fic and, I admit, that I read it pretty quickly and almost skimmed it at points. It's... I guess the thing about it, for me, is that I was in the right frame of mind for it, especially because I like Junjou Romantica for what it is--sometimes it defies cliches and that's fantastic, but other times it's all about the cliches and I love it for that, too. This is a fic about Nowaki's mother coming back into the picture and you can pretty much predict where everything is going to go, but that's almost deliberate and it's kind of what I ended up liking about it? It's hard to describe, I guess. Granted, I'm ridiculously in love with the Egoist pairing and I like that the chapters were broken up into easily managable chunks, but it's... I'm at a loss to describe what hooked me into this fic, other than to say that it was well-plotted and paced, keeping me always going, "Okay, just one more chapter before I peel myself away for bed." Not that it's a terribly long fic, (just under 18,000 words, so you'll finish it pretty quickly) but I tend to read at night before I go to bed. It's not perfect and it takes some liberties (like where Nowaki was found when he was a baby, but I just chalk up to artistic license and I'm fine with that *g*) but I ate it up because I love this kind of shit, shut up. XD (Nowaki/Hiroki.)

Junjou Romantica: Kamijou Dates a Woman (part 14) by Qatari - I've tried to shy away from doing recs of specific chapters lately because it can look kind of silly when I archive everything, but... well, this fic is long enough that I think I can get away with it. Also, my site, I do want I want, and all that. But also that this chapter was kind of utterly fantastic--it has Shinoda picking up his kid at Nowaki's hospital! I didn't know how badly I needed Shinoda and Nowaki to interact on this level (because that one chapter was fine for canon, but I need it explored more fully in fic! XD) until I read this chapter and it was kind of ridiculously great and makes me hope SUPER HARD that Shinoda will show up in future chapters again. The chapter also has Hiroki trying to get Miyagi to stop being mad at him after Hiroki's conversation with Risako and, oh, man, I love Hiroki so much. Because it's so hard for him to connect with people or deal with this storm of emotions he has and yet you can tell he genuinely wants Miyagi to not be mad at him anymore--the resolution of that scene is utterly satisfying and hilarious as well! Which is what the whole chapter (and the whole fic) is about! It's really like the continuing adventures of the cast and it's genuinely emotionally satisfying! (Implied Miyagi/Shinobu and Nowaki/Hiroki.)

Junjou Romantica: Want by Faye-Naruse - This is kind of ridiculously adorable and... well. Because it's Hiroki, I can rather easily believe that he would react this way to being turned on by Nowaki, just from talking to him and watching him, that he would accuse Nowaki of having done something to him. Because he's Hiroki. And I really love him ridiculously, but just as much... I love Nowaki for being so sweet and so open and so honest about his feelings, for being there with Hiroki in a way that works with a character like that. It's charming and a very nice image, I have to say. (Nowaki/Hiroki, NSFW.)

Junjou Romantica: Your softness beckons me by deecherrywolf - Sometimes I just want a good Nowaki POV fic. Sometimes I just want Egoist to make out already. And sometimes I get a fic that combines both! What I really appreciate about a fic like this is how much you can really feel how ridiculously gone on Hiroki he is, how much Nowaki is just completely and utterly in love with every little thing about him, that there's a sort of gentle quality (even over everything else that makes up Nowaki) to the way he thinks about Hiro-san that just really worked for me today. (Nowaki/Hiroki, NC-17.)

Junjou Romantica: So Far Away by deecherrywolf - You know what I'm still not tired of? The idea that Hiroki got around a lot when pining for someone else, that he would do the same thing while Nowaki was off in America and he had no idea about whether or not Nowaki was coming back. It's just three short scenes, but it's a glimpse into the way Hiroki deals with his problems (and also has some rather nicely written porn, which I appreciated a lot) and I can't help being that fangirl about the random guys he sleeps with because he's crushed without Nowaki. ....shut up. (OCs/Hiroki, implied Nowaki/Hiroki, NC-17.)

Junjou Romantica: Nervous Issues by deecherrywolf - Yet another thing I never get tired of (especially for a series like Junjou Romantica) is when one partner overhears the other getting hit on and hearing how they react--given that it's Nowaki, of course he gently turns the girl down and says he has someone else that's very important to him and of course it's so adorable and sweet that I could pretty much explode from it. This was a really wonderful little read today. ♥ (Nowaki/Hiroki.)

Junjou Romantica: Leave Me Breathless by deecherrywolf - This is another one that's pretty much pure porn, it's hardly even got any dialogue or anything, but that's not the point. And, despite that, they're still recognizable as Hiroki and Nowaki, which is always nice, especially the way Nowaki reacts to the little noises Hiroki makes and how sweet he is towards Hiroki even when it's obvious he really, really wants him now. It's one of those that I totally ate up when I needed just a little bit more from the fandom and bless this author for providing it. <3 (Nowaki/Hiroki, NC-17.)

Junjou Romantica: Hand Fetish by miko_no_da - Yet another thing I never tire of in this fandom! Well, besides the light porn implications. When Hiroki is just as ridiculously gone on Nowaki as the other way around, because Hiroki really is that kind of person--he'll never admit it, but the way he's completely turned on by Nowaki's giant yet gentle hands? What they can do to Hiroki, how they feel on him? Sure, I totally clicked onto this one for the porn, but I think I wound up enjoying it for the emotional stuff more. I love a ridiculously in love (even if he won't admit it) and turned on Hiroki. ♥ (Nowaki/Hiroki, R rating.)

Junjou Romantica: Hardly At Home by deecherrywolf - So, I'm clearly in a mood for more Hiroki POV and more porn with these two--which this fic provided very nicely. It was wall sex, god knows I'm weak as hell to that, but also Hiroki being his usual cranky self, even when he clearly wants Nowaki as much as Nowaki wants him. It doesn't have to be complicated, I like that this fic is more about getting straight to the sex and adding in little details along the way, rather than anything else, it's a nice way to finish up the month of 31_days prompts indeed. *g* (Nowaki/Hiroki, NC-17.)

Junjou Romantica: Wish by CheyanneChika - I never know what I'm going to get into when I pick up an AU fic like this to read, especially since I'm satisfied with the way canon went with Nowaki and Hiroki working their relationship out. (Well, as much as they'll ever be able to work out their shit communication skills.) The idea is that Nowaki accidentally mails one of the letters he wrote to Hiroki while in America, which sends everything spiralling off in a new direction, as Hiroki reads and and reacts to it. What I like about this new direction is that it doesn't forget that they still have shit communication skills, that there's still problems to be worked out between them, and one of my favorites! Hiroki addressing the fact that, yes, Nowaki may have told him, but he clearly did it while Hiroki was distracted and didn't actually mention anything before he was leaving. Nowaki has his reasons for that, but... it's still an issue to be addressed! And the fic touches on that! Plus, it's one of those fics where it's just... it's inside my wheelhouse (Hiroki chases after Nowaki to America, there's sick!Hiroki, there's communication issues between them, there's ups and downs and makeouts in the relationship) and I enjoyed it for what it was! Though, I would really like a new chapter for it soon, too. (Nowaki/Hiroki.)
