Out of the Depths by feelslikefire. bruce/loki, fem!loki, NSFW, 30k
Still in hiding from the American government and having been forced to leave Calcutta, Bruce Banner finds an angry, injured Loki in an alley in a shady part of Bangkok. Bruce has more questions than Loki is willing to answer, but when Loki finds out about the Hulk, he has some questions of his own.
I've been sitting on this fic to rec for nearly a week and I feel no closer to being able to convey how I felt about this fic and why I loved it so incredibly dearly. I've always been vaguely fond of the idea of Bruce/Loki, I felt like there was potential there, but I never had much urge to seek it out, I don't have an intense hunger for it that makes me desperate for fic, so I only occasionally settle in to read some, and that's the attitude I approached this fic with. Just something to try out and fill up a little of my reading time with it. I didn't expect to get ~*that one perfect fic*~, the one that you can point to when someone asks why you like a pairing and say, there, that one, that's why I like it and why I think it works. Possibly I'm overselling the fic, but that's how it felt for me. Of course, to be fair, I wasn't a terribly hard sell.

But the thing is I very, very often read fic with Loki and think, eh, this would be more satisfying to me if Thor was in this role. Sometimes because the fic doesn't convince me that these two specific people should be in this relationship, sometimes because I just want my OTP. And I mention this because I never felt that way at all in this fic. This absolutely had to be Bruce and Loki, nobody else could have been in it. This had to be these two people with their specific personalities and their specific issues in this specific relationship, which meant that I never wanted for anything while reading the fic, I never wanted anyone else to show up or for something else to happen. This fic did an absolutely exquisite job of showing the developing relationship between Bruce and Loki, taking them from strangers to antagonstically friendly to slowly falling in love to a relationship that affected both of them.

The characterization was absolutely brilliant, but it was also more than that. Shit happened in this fic! Bruce Hulked out and Loki met the Hulk and people were after Bruce and they had to move around and there was background detail that was fantastic, it really captured the feeling of Thailand here in a quiet sort of way, but most importantly. The parallels and contrasts between these two characters, who both have a "monster" inside them, and what that means for both of them. The author does an incredible job of using this to draw the two of them together, but also show that they're different, these are not the same people in the same situation! They're just similar enough to understand. And, oh, this Loki is so very furious in that way that it never leaves him, not even in his softer moments with Bruce. And this is a brilliant, surprisingly sarcastic (which works amazingly well, it fits with the character we saw on the screen, the author manages to get just the right tone that I had no trouble seeing these characters in my mind's eye) who is falling for this brilliant person he wants to help. There are a million little moments of Bruce just simply liking Loki, caring about him and enjoying his company and being intrigued by him (and you can sense the same in return from Loki) that you understand why they're in love.

And that's still not everything that I loved about this fic! The fem!Loki part comes in because he uses it as a disguise, it's easier for him to maintain with his magic so dangerously low, which allows the fic to write Loki as frequently sensual and seductive in a softer (but no less dangerous) way and it's gorgeously done for that, that this Loki knows exactly how he affects Bruce and nudges him on. It also allows for one of the most scorchingly hot sex scenes where Bruce goes down on Loki in female form that I have ever read, jesus christ, that was super satisfying. Both for the build up (which was delicious) and for the intensely well written sex. There's also a scene where male!Loki rides Bruce on the beach and that was super hot, too, but it was shorter and not as detailed. Like, I would recommend it for the first sex scene alone, omg.

I even love the way the fic ended, because I don't usually like that sort of ending, but I thought it worked here. The fic is only so long and that means there's only so much time for their character progression and Loki's not ready to be found by his brother yet, so it has to be this way. It's a good, heart-warming ending that I loved, the kind that won't break your heart at all, it's a happy ending, and allows for the potential for even better in the future. So, in summary: Gorgeous characterization, gorgeous relationship building, gorgeous writing, gorgeous sex, gorgeous ending, gorgeous everything I could possibly have asked for. As you can tell by the amount of word vomit I spilled everywhere over this fic.

Disperse the Frosts of Dawn by spinstitcher, loki & sleipnir + avengers + bruce/loki, canon!jotunn!loki, humor, plotful fluff, 13.8k
Freed from his banishment, Loki stays on Midgard and certainly doesn’t join the Avengers. Well, maybe a little bit. But only on alternate weekends, and definitely not when there are slime monsters involved. Along the way he reconnects with his family, learns how to bake, and starts to delve into the intriguing enigma of Bruce Banner and the Hulk.
This is a sequel to Kings and Vagabonds, which you'll need to have read first.
Chapters 1-4: This fic is actually the reason why I picked up the first fic, because Loki with the Avengers is something I'm always weak to and I'm curious about Bruce/Loki fic and how that'd work. Which is pretty hilarious in this fic right from the beginning (which I read immediately after finishing the previous one), because the author does a great job of balancing cracky humor and genuine feels, so it's this delightful joy to read when Loki is sort of kind of helping out with the Avengers and Thor is just pleased as all get out and won't let anyone disaprage his baby brother, except Thor still makes mistakes sometimes and doesn't know when to back off or doesn't always know how to read Loki (and when not to tell stories about Loki). Which was sort of hard for me to read, but it's part of the cracky aspect of the fic (as I think Thor would pay more attention to Loki's reactions now) and necessary to draw Bruce and Loki closer together--and it's not badly done, just that I'm extra sensitive. Because Thor really does adore him and he really is trying, but this is still an exaggerated fic.

There's also more action scenes, Loki being a little shit with the Avengers, Sleipnir continuing to be developed into his own character, the Avengers being annoyed as shit by Loki in that way that is pure joy (and they annoy the shit out of each other, too), and more beautifully timed comedy as Loki continues to build a new life for himself. And, oh, the Hulk taking an interest in Loki, the fic was worth reading for that alone, because it is sheer hilarious beauty. But also Loki learning to bake! Which works far better than it has any right to! And Loki&Sleipnir's relationship continuing to be a joy forever! Ugh, I need the rest of this fic stat, okay.
Chapter5: Loki with his kids is such a good, good thing for me. As well as this author has a delightful way of writing fun, snappy dialogue/narration that's just a total joy to read. I'm definitely enjoying the building relationship between Loki and Bruce, which is a pairing that hardly gets much interaction, so I enjoy it when an author takes time to build it up and make it really fun. But, oh, this chapter is the best for the introduction of Jormungandr and the absolute delight that his personality is, when he's just sort of unflappable and calm and relaxed. I love it. I LOVE IT. That the giant sea serpent is the laid back kid of Loki's brood. And I love that Jormungandr is clearly fond of his brother Sleipnir and Loki both. That Loki is wary of how Jormungandr will react to him, since they haven't seen each other in so long, that Loki clearly cares deeply about his children, even as he's just as prickly and sniping as ever. And, oh, that the author is playing with Loki's kids, you know, also being part Jotunn is an absolute delight because that's not something you always see! But, really, the star of this chapter is Jormungandr and I think this might be my new favorite take on him yet.

The Vardøgr by eag, thor/loki + bruce & loki, amnesia, 15.7k
A strange accident strips Loki of his magic and strands him on Earth. Very much movieverse.
Chapter 01: As soon as I saw EAG had written MCU fic, boy, did I pounce on that sucker. In a way, I did myself a disservice, because only the first chapter has been posted and it's just as intriguing as I'd hoped for, but now I have to wait for updates! It was still worth it, though, because, oh, this is such an interesting concept, that Loki lands out in New Mexico post-The Avengers where Bruce finds him without his memory. It's an intriguing starting chapter, because of the way Loki is so himself in the way he pokes at the way he knows things but doesn't know how he knows them and the things he should know/should be able to do, he doesn't. I love the choice of Bruce being the one to stumble over him, because that's a dynamic that's not explored as much as others are, but I'm also looking forward to whatever Thor's role in this is going to be! It's an excellent starting chapter, it did its job of capturing my attention and making me want to claw the walls for more!
Chapter 02: I am so glad this fic updated again soon! It's such an interesting concept and playing with a relationship that doesn't get much attention--the second chapter fleshing a lot of that relationship out, as Bruce and Loki settle into something like a routine out in the desert, still sort of feeling each other out. I adore what the author does here, that Bruce isn't really afraid of Loki because he really doesn't have reason to be (and has bigger things to fear than Loki), so there's a laid back feeling to everything they do, which works perfectly. Oh, sure, I'm dying to know what'll happen when Thor comes back around or if Loki will get his memories or his magic back, but I'm also greatly enjoying the details of all the things they do together.

I almost wanted to tag this as a Bruce/Loki fic, because of the tone their interaction starts to take (which is a good thing! whether it's gen or something more, I'm content to see where this goes--even if my heart will always be with Thor and Loki), when Loki watches Bruce play the piano or when he watches Bruce working on a model to help with his research or when Loki offers to share something with him. The author does a beautiful job of writing the two of them, that way that I wouldn't maybe have thought it as such, but they just calmly work together here, this could be such a fascinating friendship.
Chapter 03: This fic is going to be very hard on me. It's one that's absolutely fascinating and I want to read into the little clues being dropped here and there, but not sure if I'm reading too much into them, and just rather desperately wanting... idk, if not the whole fic in front of me so I can skip to the end and see how it ends, as is my usual response, then to have three yes/no questions to ask the author. Mostly, I just want to know if it's going to break my heart, given my usual needs/wants in fic. But I can't stay away. It's too intriguing and too interesting and too well written for me, especially when this chapter was so good. The author does beautifully with that sense of detachment Loki has without his memories, that building sense of mystery of just what happened to bring him to this point in time.

This chapter had a couple of surprises for me, which I'm trying to dance around without being too vague either, just... I didn't expect the turn of events that happened and now I'm utterly clawing at the walls to know where this will take the fic. I love the slow details being worked in, like the effects Loki's mortal body have on his current circumstances, especially given the final scene. There's so much potential for Loki to find himself, something he maybe couldn't do with his memories burning such rage through him, and the atmosphere here contributes to that. There's just a feeling to this piece, something very isolated and detached, that I can't shake while I read. It's lovely and I look forward to Loki working through it.
Chapter 04: You know how you sometimes stumble over those fics that really just catch your imagination and/or your interest, so you sit there practically stewing with the Not Knowing How This Will End and you have about a dozen questions that you want to ask the author and you're so nervous about it, because you never predict what's going to happen (chapter 4 surprised the hell out of me, I didn't expect that! just as chapter 3 surprised me as well!) and how you practically write an essay in your head about your feelings on the fic and where it might go? Because that's where I'm at with this fic. There's so much I want to say about it, so much I want to scrounge around for clues about the direction it'll eventually end up in, how I'm so nervous about where this is going and how long the fic will ultimately be (somehow it sneaked up to being almost 10k words when it feels like I only just started reading it!) and it's kind of a terrible experience, except it's also the best experience, because that's what well-written fic can do to a reader.

As for specifics on this chapter, oh, I continue to love Loki's relationship with Thor, that it's this mix of comfort and distance, that something about this feels right and his body finds it familiar, that running his hands through a sleeping Thor's hair is soothing to him, that Thor surprises him by being surprisingly gentle when touching him, yet it's not terribly surprising. It feels like this Loki just needs a little time to figure himself out, but that his relationship with Thor isn't a problem and, oh, that's what I want. I love that none of this is stated outright, that I simply feel it along with Loki, that maybe he needs room, but this doesn't feel like a bad thing.

My only worry is that I want this fic to be at the halfway point, because the author has done such a gorgeous job of building Loki up to being on the precipice of real change and being able to figure himself out, but he's not quite there yet, he needs more time. And if this fic isn't going in that direction, if it's going to end up being, say, a tragic fic, then I'm not sure I want to stay invested, because I am a delicate flower who doesn't like her heart crushed. Basically, this fic is driving me up a wall, because of how much I love it and how much I want from it and how many feelings it gives me.
Chapter 05: I am going to have to step very carefully to avoid spoilers when it comes to this chapter because I don't want to give too much away. I will say, however, that I've been reading this fic as it's been posted and I was wary that, given the way the previous chapter had ended and how much time was left with the fic, that it could form any kind of satisfying resolution. I... was not expecting the turn this chapter took! As I was reading it, I definitely had my, "Oh, my god!" flaily moments because I hadn't predicted that and I kind of loved it terribly for how it made sense of everything and fit with everything I'd been feeling with the fic.

Namely, that Loki and Thor were good together, that their relationship did need time apart from each other for Loki to figure himself out, but that what was between them was still good. But also that his friendship with Bruce provided something that his relationship with Thor couldn't give him and it wasn't about a romantic relationship but was still important and just as important when it came to the focus of the fic. This chapter satisfied that and made me fall ridiculously in love with Loki all over again. Especially the tone he takes here, it's just... so perfect for where he's at at this point.
Chapter 06: As mentioned, this is an extra to the main fic, so it's just a quiet little piece around Christmas time (which is perfect for the time of year, of course) where Bruce and Loki have something of a friendship established and it's almost kind of peaceful and definitely is sweet. I adored it for still keeping Loki's sharp edges, but I could believe that he would still be nice to Bruce in this way and I adored it for the discussion of what Christmas was, explaining it to a Norse god, without getting too heavy-handed about it. It's a sweet exchange of a gift with Bruce and Loki that isn't really fluffy, but instead just perfect for the characters.

Breakfast of Discordians by Dira Sudis (dsudis), avengers + loki + background hulk/loki, humor, 1.2k
"Well, Bruce," Tony said. "When a crazy Frost Giant demi-god and a big green rage monster hate each other enough to have frankly alarming penetrative sex...."
You know what's also fun? BABY FIC. As in, a baby gets dropped in Bruce's lap, that is suspiciously green and strong and kind of... Frost Giant-y, somehow. And I could kiss this author for remembering that, yeah, I'm pretty sure a half-Frost Giant baby would be a lot stronger than a human baby. But also because THIS IS DARLING, the Avengers reacting to having a baby dropped into their midst and realizing it's Loki and the Hulk's kid, with some bonus hilarious lines by Tony. A short, but great little read.
