Avengers: Cakewalk by Edonohana - [Note: There are SPOILERS for The Avengers in this fic and this rec.] Oh, I am so glad this link was handed to me because this is a gorgeous fic with Clint and Natasha set post-movie, about the aftermath of everything they went through at Loki's hands, how Clint needed to prop himself back up, how Natasha helped with that in her own way. There's something so dark and horrifying underneath the surface of this fic, the implications of everything these characters have been through, especially Natasha, while still being a fic that's about getting better and setting oneself to rights. The way they interact here, it's gorgeously done for how they work so well together, how Clint obviously cares a lot, how they respect each other, how they move together, even when it's a simple mission that neither of them has to really work at. It's about the emotions under the surface, it's about the things they don't have to say, and it's all just... jeez, the feelings it gives me. (Clint/Natasha.)
Avengers: Uncomfortable by allourheroes - [Note: There are SPOILERS for The Avengers in this fic and this rec.] Summary: Clint is linked to the kink meme. Shock of all shocks, Loki seeing it leads him to more trauma. This is an awfully short fic for the premise, it's really only just the one moment, but, well. It's Thor/Loki to Clint's trauma and there're a couple of lines that had me doing that stuffing my hand practically into my mouth to stifle the laughter thing. The second to last line is totally killer especially and, thus, I loved this. (Thor/Loki, somewhat Clint/Natasha.)
Avengers: the way out is through by Nokomis - [Note: There are SPOILERS for The Avengers in this fic and this rec.] I picked this one up because it was labeled Clint/Natasha and it's not wrong about that, but I would also consider this more of a Natasha piece than a Clint/Natasha piece. It's about the aftermath of the movie, of the characters putting their lives back together, centered on the Black Widow, which means it's a very subtle, understated piece with a lot left unsaid. The details of it are lovely, but I especially enjoyed her interaction with Steve in this fic because it just hit the perfect notes, all the little ways that the two of them are similar. But also Clint and Natasha and Steve in that one scene together was such a great trio and I didn't even need makeouts to find this piece gorgeous. (Some Clint/Natasha, but it's mostly gen.)
Avengers: there is no beginning by ohladybegood - This is an interesting piece, it's got a very... dream-like quality to it, it's in tiny little snippets of moments, and probably a lot of it went over my head for now. But there's a quality to it that worked well for me, a solidity to Clint's characterization and the harshness of his life and the way he interacts with Natasha that I really liked. I feel like they're difficult to find fic for that vibes with me, but this was nicely done, I think. (Some Clint/Natasha.)
Avengers: those who are afraid of wolves by ohladybegood - This is the companion piece to "there is no beginning", this time focused on Natasha, with the same atmosphere as the previous fic, where it's just small flashes of moments, but somehow it gives such insight into Natasha's character. It's hard to describe her, the harshness of her life, while it's not precisely painful, but there is something very heavy about it--there's a line in the fic like that that describes how she feels that is absolutely perfect. I found this to be a little breathtaking and quite a lot intense. (Some Clint/Natasha.)
Avengers: Any Way I Do by MissJeeves - [Note: There are SPOILERS in this fic and this rec.] Oh, no. I mean, I'd just finished reading a hilarious Thor fic, so there was already a bunch of serotonin floating around in my brain, but then I stumbled over this fic, where Clint and Natasha secretly got married and eventually Tony has to find out, and it's JUST AS HILARIOUS AS PROMISED. The author has a fantastic Tony voice and he's perfectly in character and everything is screechingly funny and I just really like this fandom a lot right now. (Some background Clint/Natasha, but it's only half the point.)
→ Bouncing Baby Sniper by vain_glorious, avengers, some clint/natasha + steve/peggy, 5k
Clint Barton is Peggy Carter's grandson.
This is an intriguing as all get out set-up--Clint Barton is Peggy Carter's grandson, which Steve eventually finds out and it rattles him terribly. It's an intriguing situation, but even more than that is what the author does with it and Steve's character, the disconnect between his old life and his current one, how he struggles to connect with anything, despite that he's such an open, sincere person. The writing is absolutely lovely, the author does a beautiful job of keeping things subtle yet getting the depth of everything across here and, oh, by the end I was nearly ready to start getting a bit misty because it's all just so... meaningful. The author especially does a gorgeous job with Tony and Clint's relationship, but also this Tony is fantastic and I really loved this Bruce, everyone just felt really perfect and spot on. A gorgeous piece.
→ Permanence by eiluned, clint/natasha, NSFW, fluff, 3.2k
"They're stuck in a building that's about to fall apart, pinned down by energy weapon fire, when Clint asks her to marry him."
I think I'm in a really warm, soft, and fluffy place with this fandom right now, after having read so many sweet and charming fics, so, okay, I'm up for Clint and Natasha getting married fic, despite that I would have thought that'd be the last thing I'd want from this pairing. It helps that the author does a lovely job of it, though, where Clint and Natasha both felt like themselves, they weren't about big declarations, only smaller ones, most of the celebrating is done by those around them instead. Yet, there's no less connection between them for that and it was just... really sweet to read.
→ Biting the Same Bullet by starbolin, clint/natasha, NSFW, 2.7k
Three stolen cars and a railway ride between Volgograd and Budapest, and she still doesn’t know who he is.
Oh, this was a lovely piece. It's a background scene for Natasha and Clint, when he first recruited her rather than killing her. It doesn't really fill in a lot of the details of what happened with them, but I found that it didn't matter, because the characterization was so sharp and spot on, the sexytimes were super super hot, and I feel like half-explanations work well for a pairing like this. The writing is gorgeous and I loved all the little touches the author put in, letting me picture the scene so perfectly, right down to the body language of the characters.
→ people clint barton kissed for the mission (and one he'd know anywhere) by Traincat, clint/natasha + clint/everyone + avengers, humor, 3.1k
Hawkeye actually does have a superpower. It involves kissing people.
I remember this author from one of my absolute favorite Young Avengers fics ever and now it's KISSING FOR THE MISSION, yes, this is a good trope, especially when an author can walk a fine line between cracky and in character humor, which this fic does wonderfully. I love the use of that moment from the comics when Clint can tell it's not Wanda from kissing her, transferred over into the movieverse, where it's more of a superpower (sort of) and that makes it HILARIOUS. The different ways Clint kisses his teammates, the growing sense of family here, the hilarity of the situation, the comedic timing of the author, all of it is absolutely perfect.
→ Flew Away by boombangbing, bruce/jane + background dealings with bruce/betty and thor/jane + other thor characters, mildly nsfw, 32k
Bruce comes back to New York eight months after Tony dropped him off at a ferry terminal, with a nasty cough, no money, and nowhere to stay. Jane answers his shot in the dark phonecall, and suddenly he's helping to build wormholes while S.H.I.E.L.D. are quietly watching his every move.
I was browsing fic recs on the ffa meme and there were some MCU recs, where someone mentioned these two Bruce/Jane recs. I stopped to think about the idea of the ship for a couple of seconds and found that my instant response to the idea was HOLY SHIT YES. And these two fics were exactly what I was hoping for, because the author makes it clearly about the developing relationship between these two characters while not forgetting that they did have feelings for others at the same time. The first fic deals with the ending of Bruce and Betty's relationship, which was lovely for what it was, but it was ending already and that had nothing to do with the Bruce/Jane relationship. That was fucking perfect. The second story touches a bit on the Thor/Jane relationship, but the resolution isn't as strong, because they're just simply not around each other enough to get any resolution and, as much as I want to see Jane deal with that, I also appreciate that the fic doesn't tie everything up with a neat bow, because that would take away from the utterly natural, organic feel the writing has.
This is a perfect building of a relationship, it doesn't ignore that Bruce has a whole shitload of issues, nor does it make Jane a saint or overly angsty. She is incredibly solid and brilliant and interesting here! You see why they develop a friendship first, then realize their attraction to each other, the author spends all these little moments building that up, whether it's a shared love of science or their mutual difficult relationships or simply watching crappy movies together. The second fic even had a moment of them just simply hanging out, being utter fucking NERDS together that had me putting my reader down to shriek with laughter a bit because, yes, the nerd is strong with both of these and you can feel that that's another brick in the foundation of the developing relationship. Not that it's all smooth sailling, because there are definitely missteps and occasional awkwardness and the age difference is a bit of a thing, especially when Erik doesn't entirely approve, but neither is Jane so young that she doesn't take charge of her own life.
The writing itself is exquisite, the kind of smooth prose that's just easy to get sucked into and realize, oh, shit, I just read 15k like it was nothing, because it pulled me so completely into the story. It balances both of these characters and paces everything beautifully, so that you see why this relationship works, why it's not just a crack pairing, and it delivers on all the promise of how great their interaction can be. My only complaint is that there's not more of this series, because I would love a third fic to see where they're going and just to get more of their fantastic, science nerd interactions, where the balance of how they counterbalance each other and have so much in common is perfect. If you enjoy either character or like adorable nerds being nerds together or just simply lovely writing, these fics are for you.
Avengers/Thor/Iron Man: Always angry by belmanoir - [NOTE: This is part 10 in a longer series that should be read in order.] This series, up to this point, has mostly focused on Loki, Tony, and Thor, so I was intrigued to see a story focused on Bruce. I expected maybe something more of an objective view or an outsider's view on everything that was happening with Tony and Loki, which this fic also had, and was really interesting to read! But what got me with this story was how... to be fair, I haven't read a lot of Bruce fic, but this one still just... elbowed me in the feelings, somehow. The way he dealt with the rising anger, the way the author made me feel that right along with him, the sense of panic and yet fury just underneath the surface, that was pretty gorgeous. I love the way Bruce reacts to Loki being in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s prison a second time around, how that sets off so many issues that are lingering under the surface with the character. There's a lot of depth to Bruce Banner and this fic did a lovely job of touching on a lot of them. (Bruce/Tony, some background Tony/Loki.)
→ Always angry by belmanoir, bruce/tony + background tony/loki, suicidal ideation, 6.3k
While Tony is trying to get S.H.I.E.L.D. to release Loki (or at least give him a TV), Bruce is mostly waiting in the lobby.

→ After The End by copperbadge, bruce/betty + other characters, 3.5k
"You looking for someone?" "A friend. My friend Bruce. I came here to find him."
Oh, my gosh, this was beautiful. I was a touch wary that melding the previous Hulk movies with The Avengers might feel awkward, given that I'm not sure how much they're supposed to go together, but this was perfectly done and felt completely natural. And, oh, the building tension as Betty gets closer and closer to finding Bruce amongst all the chaotic aftermath was beautifully done, to the point that I was practically getting antsy for the characters! But it was also a beautiful fic for that aftermath, the cleaning up and organizing the relief and just the coming down from right after the battle. All of the characters that appeared were lovely (I was especially fond of Steve popping in, but Tony's occasional lines were hilarious) but Betty herself was wonderful and intriguing and it was such fun to see her being so solid here and so relatable. This was beautifully written and I love the idea of a Bruce/Betty post-movie reunion just like this, all subtle emotions and gestures, it was perfect.
→ All My Lovely Sins by Lise, thor/loki/steve pre-slash, 4.9k
Sometimes, one makes decisions in a split second. They might have been different with a little more consideration. Life hinges on those moments.
I would have read this fic just for the Thor/Loki/Steve and forced cuddles, but it is so much more than that. The attention and care Lise puts into Loki's characterization, the utter frustration I feel at watching him and his stubbornness is like the pure, concentrated form of those scenes where Thor nearly gets through to him in the movies. Then there's a lovely balance of these three characters, each of them are important, and, oh, I just want them all to be happy. Together. Because these three felt nicely balanced here, that Steve was enough to break apart the acrimony between the brothers, but that deep, deep history there was just as important, that Thor is important to Loki in a way no one else is. All while showing the twin, opposing desires that drive Loki--his desire to be "strong", to keep his pride and his desire to be loved, accepted, and taken care of--both of them felt so incredibly intensely and you understand why he acts the way he does.
And you think, oh, if only Loki would let go of that horrible need to always be on his guard, always prove himself, except it's also what saves him here, that Thor knows him well enough to play on that, which makes Loki get up and keep fighting. It illustrates the difficulty of Loki's character and his life, that letting go of one or the other might be easier on him, but he can't, at least not yet. And, oh, this is a floppy!Loki (WHICH I LOVE WITH ALL MY HEART) but it's also a Loki that you don't underestimate, because of what he can accomplish, sometimes just through pure stubbornness, even if it's killing him, both physically and emotionally, at times. Plus, still further more, this actually isn't an unhappy piece, it's surprisingly sweet and fluffy (as much as these characters can be when it comes to Lise and the breathless intensity of her writing) and the ending just made me happy.
