A Bright and Bitter Flame by forthegreatergood, loki + avengers, fem!loki, amensia!loki, divergent timeline, aztec mythology, 281.2k
Post-Thor, canon-divergence. Loki doesn't survive his fall from the Bifrost and winds up reincarnated on Midgard as a mortal magician named Lucy with no memory of her previous life. Her decision-making skills have not been much improved by the transformation.
I have been following this fic since it was, I'd guess, about 30k words or so, snagging the fic faithfully every time it updated (even if I occasionally put off reading until there were a handful of chapters, because I would tear through them so greedily and then whine for more) and just generally having a whole lot of feelings about it. I've done many chapter-by-chapter update recs (I was up to chapter 30 when I went on hiatus for awhile), which I'll include below, but I wanted to do a more general rec for those who might not have yet picked this one up.

This fic has been pretty amazing for me and has given me so much to chew on over the course of time I've been reading it--I can't tell you how many conversations I've had about what the fic is doing and where it's going. Any fic that sticks with me that long, long enough that I've pestered other people into reading it so they can discuss it with me, you know it's got that certain something that I want my fic to have. And one of the things that it does best is something that you slowly absorb over the course of the fic--the similarities and differences between Loki and Lucy.

Because, sure, I picked this fic up for female!Loki with amnesia and then stuck around for the shenanigans and hundred mile an hour tangents and details and obscure cultural references, but it quickly grew to be more than that, once Thor showed up and would not be swayed from how he was sure that Lucy was Loki. And, oh, that's when things got really good, becasue it's all this fun, hilarious banter with rants about everything mixed with all the norse bro feelings you could ask for. Every scene that Thor is in is one I sit up and take notice of, because he clearly loves his brother (sister now) so much and is working hard to balance what he knows to be true with her wishes and her anger and her insistence that she's not Loki.

There's much more going on, of course, there's an actual plot with Aztec mythology throwing some epic shenanigans into the mix, there's magical theory teeming everywhere in little ways, and the fic is now quickly hurtling towards becoming even more epic, now that more has been revealed, and more Asgardians are getting into the mix. So far, it's mostly been Thor and Sif who have wormed their way into Lucy's life, but there was an awesome scene with Odin and there's hints that Frigga may be the next to come to Midgard for her baby. Which I would be totally happy about if the fic forever focused on just the Thor characters, the author is actually pretty good about balancing the scenes between Lucy's interaction with those characters and with the other Avengers--every scene she shares with Coulson, who is an excellent foil for her rapid-fire speeches with his placid, calm demeanor, is particuarly a delight.

So, all of that is a delight, in a fic that I would read just to watch Lucy run around being herself and mentally comparing her to Loki, how she seems so different on the surface, but... when you stop to think about it, a lot of it really does make sense. While there are points in the fic that made me wonder if the author knew what they were doing (as some things aren't very clear at times, what we're supposed to know and what we're not, why certain elements of the plot are around, if they mean anything or if they're random), by the current point, I'm much more certain the author knows where this is all going. And, oh, I love this Thor so much, who has grown up and yet is still so recognizable, every scene he has with Lucy is just so emotionally charged, even when they're just talking, because the author writes him very well and gets their complicated relationship across here. Especially how it's not really either one of their faults, nor are either of them blameless in this complicated mix of their lives. Lucy is so much like Loki in that--she's not given a fair shake all the time, but she's also not a saint by any means, so it's fascinating to watch her interact with everyone else like this. Which is yet another part of why this fic has the potential to be one of my very favorite fics ever in the fandom.

At Rest by sinemoras09, loki/natasha (possibly) + potentially implied thor/Loki, loki & natasha, fem!loki, 4.7k
What you cannot imagine, I shall be that. (Loki infiltrates SHIELD. Gen. Hinted Lady Loki/Natasha.)
Sometimes you run across a fic that leaves you with your heart in your throat and a tense set to your shoulders the entire time, because it's so beautifully written and just makes your heart ache in these subtle, gorgeous ways. And that's what this fic does--as Natasha finds herself befriending another female agent at S.H.I.E.L.D., someone who is sharp and damaged and intriguing, I was left a little breathless at how their relationship developed. That's the amazing thing about this fic, how Natasha and "Laura" have a surprising amount of similarities, how they fit together as friends and it makes so much sense. But there's so much more under the surface and you can read between Laura's lines, even if you understand why Natasha doesn't, and it's all breathtakingly gorgeous and bittersweet. The author packed in everything needed for a fic like this.

Second Skin by stray_alchemist, fem!loki, 1k
All enticing tales begin with a wish uttered in the wrong hour, a need answered in the most unexpected way. It was no different for Loki. The young sorcerer discovered his shapeshifting abilities - and the fact that apparently there was no match for him better than... himself.
This fic does rather drop you into the middle of the story and is vague about what's going on precisely, but it's got lovely writing and it's about Loki exploring his new female body after shape shifting into this new form and I am all for that. I love the hesitancy and yet boldness at exploring this new body, the lovely language used when it's about the exploration and situation of it, rather than strictly about sensation (that difference makes sense in my head, shhhh), that it's about finding something so fascinating and yet there's an undercurrent of terror of what would happen were anyone to find out, given what they already think of him. It's well-balanced and I always enjoy Loki exploring gender and both sexes.

Extremely Hot And Currently Female by copperbadge, tony/loki + background steve/pepper + other asgardians, nsfw, genderfluid!loki, fem!loki, pregnant!loki
Tony knows he shouldn't sleep with Loki, it's just sometimes he's drunk and she's female and he forgets why.
So, this fic rounded out my reading last night and I can't tell you how great it was to have two fics that were each close to 20k words long and both gorgeously written, it's so satisfying when you can just curl up for awhile before bed and read about 40k of fic that's completely engrossing and a joy to read. But, then, I often like copperbadge's writing, so I was super intrigued by the promise of a Tony/Loki fic, especially with the tags on this one and, oh, I was not disappointed. This is set from Tony's point of view, which means there's a lot of really hilarious commentary or interjections, especially because Loki is so complicated and Tony's complicated, too. The fic does a gorgeous job of showing the complications between the two of them, how they will never really have a smooth relationship, not even when things do eventually smooth out.

But it wasn't just that it was a good Tony/Loki fic (though, it was that, too), it was much bigger in scope than that. The fic pulls in elements of the comics as well (the Young Avengers make appearances towards the end, there are references to Children's Crusade and Civil War) to give a bigger picture of what happens as their lives go onwards. Even then it was still more than that, with the way Loki's gender was entirely fluid here and I love that so much. I love that it's just part of who Loki is, whether she's female or whether he's male, it's still always Loki and the complicated relationships the character has with people. It's also baby fic and Loki interacting with the Avengers and the next generation of Avengers and fantastic sass and yet genuine emotions and, oh my god, this fic had Tony going to Asgard to meet the in-laws and being so Tony about it, right to Odin's face and I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW AMAZING THAT WAS. Like, if you didn't see what made Loki interested in Tony before that or why their relationship worked, the scenes on Asgard were so perfect that they would have convinced me all over again.

Stormbringer by singleorganicmachine, thor/loki, NSFW, some fem!loki + male!loki, siren!loki, human!thor, viking!thor, jotunn!loki, mer!loki, 16k
Set in an Alternate Universe where Thor is a human Viking, the headstrong young Prince has set sail in search of a mysterious "monster" that has been destroying ships and luring men to their deaths. The journey appears hopeless at first, but he cannot turn back for his honor is at stake and he fears he will never be king if he fails. Finally there comes a clue, and on an unknown island rimmed with the skeletons of sunken ships, Thor finds that this "monster" is anything but what he expects.
I love all things mer!Loki, so I was excited by Lady Loki here and I definitely found that that's when this fic was at its best. It has a strong Thor presence and the dynamic is lovely, with Loki being sensual and seductive to Thor's direct and forthright ways. He has that anger without being a jerk about it that really works for me with Thor's character, which can be a surprisingly difficult balance at times in this fandom. I'm also enjoying the world building a lot here! The author sets it up very well, there's a smoothness and richness to the descriptions and details worked into the writing, lending it a sort of fairy tale type of feel while still being a more direct, sharp story. Sometimes it's just a simply description of the previous boats that have crashed and sank into the lagoon of Loki's island or the description of the pearls around her neck, but other times it's more substantial in the way this feels well thought out.

I do like the ideas the fic puts forth, the use of Loki's magic and shapeshifting, the blurring of gender lines here and how he molds himself to Thor's wishes without losing that this is still entirely Loki, who is wily and cunning and sly and seductive. As mentioned, I do think this fic is at its strongest when Loki is in the shape of a woman (and I love that she is just as much Loki as the male form, that truly both are just extensions of Loki, same as her Jotunn form is), but perhaps at least some part of that is that I want Lady Loki in this. It's also, though, that the scene where Thor climbs the cliff to get to her and the rough way he puts her on her back and fucks into her, all while she lures him ever closer, is super hot, omg. That was far and away my favorite part of the fic and I'm eager to see where the rest of this one goes!

To the Bone by Runie (Runic), thor/loki + tony/loki + other asgardians, NSFW, jotunn!loki, arranged marriage, some fem!loki, loki's kids, 6.2k
Past: No one expected the marriage to go well, which is why the stipulation was made for Loki and Thor to separate once a child was produced. That is exactly what happened, leaving two broken creatures in its wake.
Ahhh, this one is fun and I read all ~5k (until I saw there was a fourth chapter posted, which I also immediately read) in one sitting and it's got all teh things I enjoy, including mentions of Thor and Tony's friendship, Loki being gender and sex fluid, and they have a kid who actually puts in an appearance in the fic! Who actually seems to be part of the story, rather than just mentioned once and given no personality! (Not that I'm not guilty of that myself, shhhh.) The latest chapter also has a lovely conversation between Frigga and Loki, even if they're not mother and son in this universe, it's still a sweet conversation that kept the spirit of the original universe's characters. Overall, it's fairly short for now, but it's also the kind of writing that just absolutely flies by without me realizing how much I've read, because it's all the stuff I love, and each chapter alternates between the beginnings of the Thor/Loki relationship and the current distance between them, as they start to get mixed in with the Midgardians. It's just a lot of fun!

The Power of Uruz by Runie (Runic), thor/loki + thor/amora + loki/amora, NSFW, fem!loki, sex magic, voyeurism, 4k
Thor catches Amora and Loki in a compromising situation. Amora decides to turn the encounter into a learning experience.
More fun fic! There should be more sex magic fic in this fandom, especially with Thor giving energy to Loki in the form of a thorough fucking. Amora is a delight and I love that there's some Thor/Amora in the fic as well. But it's the way Thor looks at fem!Loki, the way he practically cherishes her, the way the rest of the world seems to disappear when he sees her, ahhh, I love that. There is also Loki riding Thor until he flips them over and fucks her harder and instructional sex magic and sexy fun! Plus, I love fem!Loki who is arranged to be married to Thor! It's only in the background, but I still love it. And that's what this fic is, just pure fun and so many things I greatly enjoy in this fandom. :D

AVENGERS/THOR: And the strays are pining for their unrequited mothers by Sarek (Sarahzile)

SUMMARY: Thor receives a visit from her wayward not-sister. Things seem to be going well for the future CEO of Asgard Industries, but it never quite goes that way, does it?

REC: I'll warn ahead of time that the ending is vague and hard to track what's going on or what the implications of it are meant to be saying, I'd have liked to see it be a little more tightened up, but I picked this fic up for genderswapped Thor and Loki and, boy, did this fic do a lovely job of it. The writing is lovely, all the little details that say so much about Loki's character and her issues, which are similar to canon Loki's, but also somehow... not precisely softened, but feel slightly different, more tailored to this version. Her relationship with her mother and her sister, both of them very complicated and paralleling canon really well, without feeling like nothing changed because of the alternate setting. This Thor is lovely as well, she works surprisingly well in female form, but I bought it here. But, oh, this female version of Loki, who is hard to read (except Thor has so much practice at reading her sister and Loki opens up to her more than anyone) and so angry at her life, she's gorgeous and elegant and tangled and fantastic. Even the brief sex scene was elegant, super fucking hot, and gorgeous the way they touched each other, so intimate and lovely. I'd have liked to have seen this a bit more fleshed out, but what was here was fantastic and well-written and so good already. (Thor/Loki, NSFW, fem!Loki, fem!Thor.)
AVENGERS/THOR: Ritual by KillTheDirector
SUMMARY: Loki was banished to the outer reaches of Asgard, close enough to remain under Heimdall's watch, but far enough to be unable to cause chaos.
REC: This is a short fic, it's really just an excuse for magic ritual sex with a vague set-up framed around it. Which isn't a bad thing! It's well-written, any more detail and it would have been trying too hard, instead it works to keep the intimacy of this scene between Thor and Loki, it was the right balance between too little info and too much info. But, honestly, I was reading this for the porn and, oh, was I happy with it on that account. Especially so because it's Loki in Lady Loki form and involves Thor going down on her while she draws runes with blood and chants, rather delighting in the hitch in her breath as he scrapes his teeth over her sensitive parts and then fucks her. This is the kind of porn that's about characterization as well, with Loki being sly and slinky to Thor's directness and honesty, just a hint of sadness at what they've come to, because Thor clearly does genuinely love his brother. But also it's just really good, super hot porn. Bless. (Thor/Loki, fem!Loki, NSFW.) → Customer Loyalty by asktheravens, thor/loki, fem!loki, human au, adorableness, 1.5k
Thor is the kind of guy who knows the entire Emergency Room staff by name, but Nurse Loki is his favorite.
This was totally fun, with nurse!Loki and cheerful jock Thor who just... does so much stuff that of course he gets hurt sometimes, which the author made work because he's not dumb about it or how, when he's around Loki, he's just happily confident, going with his instincts. And their banter is fun, Loki here walks that line between a softer version but still so Loki about it, and I just really love the examples of the shit Thor does and how, eventually, he wins her over, because female Loki is much the same as canon Loki about such things. This was just pure light-hearted charm, all the good stuff and happiness you want out of fandom sometimes!
