Shadow Plays by dreamlittleyo, thor/loki, NSFW, time loop, dub con, 24.4k
In which Thor lives a single day more times than he can count, and Loki doesn't know how to fix it.
Chapters 1-7: I'd been trying to hold off on this fic until it was finished, especially since it was at 7 out of 8 parts at the time of this rec, because I knew it would be one I loved, but... well, I caved. I had to read it now! After bringing Loki back to Asgard, Thor finds himself living the same day over and over, and HOLY CRAP DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT. I think I chose well, in reading it at this point, for it ends on a cliffhanger (as it must), but not one I can't live without... yet I still get the fun of anticipating the next chapter! And I do love that feeling, that sense of anxiousness and looking forward to what comes next, knowing that there will still be something good for me to read whenever the next part is posted. At the same time, of course, oh I want more of it now! All the more so because this fic does pretty much absolutely everything I want in it.

The idea of trapping Thor in an endlessly repeated day is fascinating, the author is fantastic at those first few days when he tries everything he can think of to fix what's going wrong, to fix the terrible end to the day, to stop seeing that horrible scene playing out again and again. It's fantastic to watch him try so many different things, to go to different people, and to try to explain--it's not done in terribly much detail, because this is a fic that focuses on the Thor/Loki relationship, so instead those scenes are given the actual pagetime, but it's not less satisfying for it. Watching the different ways Thor explains what's happening to Loki, watching the different tactics Loki takes to solve the problem, the fantastic use of magic woven around the scenes, even as the heart of the matter is on Thor's building frustration and erosion of his restraint on how much he wants his brother.

Because that's where the real heart of this fic is and, oh, it's so good. The characterization is so sharp and perfect, this Loki is so poisonous and angry, so cutting and cruel. And this Thor is trying to be patient because he hurts for his brother, because he longs for them to be close again, but Thor is not a gentle soul and that's something I was just talking about earlier in the day, before picking this fic up, that Thor is many good qualities, but he is also terrifying anger and raw power and dangerous. Thor has always gone after what he wanted, so when he holds himself back on the one thing he wants, when that control finally snaps, it's not nice, and, that was the best thing. The author strikes that perfect balance with both of these characters, doing a gorgeous job of wearing down the distance between them in their relationship, and building something almost like trust between them again.

The fic also managed to surprise me at points--I was so certain I knew which way this fic was going, but then, nope, I was totally off! And I love when fic can surprise me, when it makes perfect sense, and gives me that jolt of adrenaline that I so often seek in fic, that zinging moment where I practically have to shake myself and go back to reread the paragraph I just finished because my brain is either spinning out where I think this is all going next or because I'm too excited to get to the next line. Plus, oh, the sex is... it's not nice, it's definitely on the far side of dub-con, but Loki is clearly aroused by it, and it's meant to be rough and angry, which makes it all the hotter for me, in this author's hands. So, basically, a fantastic plot, stunning characterization, lovely writing, and super hot sexytimes. Goddammit, I need a new one of these, like, every day!
Chapters 8: I have been waiting for this final chapter, because this is one of the best fics I've read in this fandom and I love it dearly and there was only one more chapter to go and I desperately wanted to know how it was going to end! And I love the author for the delicate balance achieved here, for the ending that didn't entirely break my heart, but didn't pull its punches, either. The emotional resolution of Thor and Loki's relationship is what it had to be, it was satisfying when considering what they could realistically have given the circumstances they find themselves in here, and it definitely got my heart in my throat a little when they met up again. Because Loki is complicated and Thor loves him but understands that Loki's complicated and, oh, this Thor characterization is so good for me, it's really well done (as is Loki), that difficult balance between respecting Loki, but also how Thor is not a patient sort of person--SO GOOD. And really good Thor characterization is actually sort of rare in this fandom, so I treasure it and hold it close and love it when I find it! All of that, plus really excellent sex, which was super hot and perfectly characterized, the kind of sex scene that's also about insight into the characters and their relationship and their feelings for each other in that moment. Just. Best author. Bless.

Eight Months of a Century by stereobone, thor/loki + other asgardians + avengers, NSFW, pregnant!loki, 32.5k
"Six weeks ago," Loki says, when Thor remains silent. "Surely you remember."
Sweet jesus, this fic. Sure, as soon as I saw, oh, hey, 32k+ fic about Loki getting knocked up, why, yes, I am going to read that! And I would have enjoyed it if that's all there really was to it, because, oh, man, Loki experiencing an unpredictable, batshit pregnancy, all the weird cravings and mood swings and nausea and discomfort and everything, that is all so very good for me, because it makes for a fascinating look at Loki's character and it makes me love him and sympathize with him and just generally have a lot of love in my heart. So, that part was pretty excellent. Even better was that he and Thor were staying with the Avengers and any time that happens, I am over the fucking moon again, never mind when both things happen at once! All of that was very satisfying.

But the best part of this fic? This was not happy and fluffy, for all that some of the trappings of it were. This Loki was razor-edged and so sharp and cutting and even just downright mean at times, just because Loki is angry and hates and is full of so much of everything. His relationship with Thor is not easy, they barely touch each other for most of the fic, Loki is hot and cold, always pushing Thor away in that way that Loki does, even when he clearly loves and wants Thor. And it wasn't just about hormones or anything like that, it was purely Loki, because he still had so much shit to work through, even after he was readjusting to life back in Asgard and working on being accepted again. That was so gorgeous and that was what really kept me sucked into this fic, reading until 5am because, fuck you, no way was I putting this fic down for anything so petty as a good night's sleep or whatever.

The author does a gorgeous job of making this about the Thor and Loki relationship and all the issues in it, with not just diving right into a romantic relationship, even though that's clearly what it is on both sides. The author does a gorgeous job of weaving that together with Loki's pregnancy, with the pregnancy not just being a way to draw them together and yet it is what draws them together, which makes sense when you read it, what I'm trying to say. The pacing of this is gorgeous, I love that it's focused on Thor&Loki, but the other Avengers are around and they're not so easily won over, except babies make people vulnerable and, oh, Loki's treatment of the kid growing inside him is so fucking perfect that I can hardly stand it. This author knew exactly how to bring out all the feelings I have about Thor/Loki+babies+their issues, knew exactly how to really get into the heart of their issues and play all the right notes, knew how to write an ending that left me with the worst fic hangover, jesus. I couldn't read anything after this, not until at least the next day, because I was too hung up on how emotionally satisfying the resolution of this was, how fucking PERFECT this fic was. I think this may yet be my favorite version of Thor and Loki's kid yet--which is helped by the baby having an actual presence in the fic, even when it's still about the Thor/Loki relationship. Just. UGH, SO GOOD. And bonus super hot sex that was fucking perfect for the mood and Loki being so... Loki. I'm just going to curl up in this fic and never let it go now.

Winter and Spring by Sinclair_Spirits, thor/loki, NSFW, some dub con aspects, some violence, jotunn!loki, arranged marriage, 62.5k wip
Loki is given to Thor by his brother as a ploy to gain Asgard's army. Much political scheming and conspiracies ensue as Loki finally finds his place in life and in Thor's heart.
Chapters 1-10: THIS FIC. I do not know how I am going to be able to describe this fic without either going completely off the rails about it or keyboard mashing my way through it or settling for a description that does not quite feel like enough. When I first read the summary of this fic--"Loki as Daenerys and Thor as Drogo. Loki is given to Thor by his brother as a ploy to gain Asgard's army. Much political scheming and conspiracies ensue as Loki finally finds his place in life and in Thor's heart."--I said, yes, I am going to read that because that sounds AMAZING and maybe a little hilarious. I was pleased that the writing seemed to be really solid--there are a lot of typos and a few misspellings, but otherwise the writing is clean, smooth, and flows very well. But mostly I was just rolling around in the utter deliciousness of an AU politically arranged marriage that was super super tasty!

I'm not sure precisely where that changed, possibly around the third or fourth chapter, when the author wisely didn't try to make the fic stick strictly to the A Song of Fire and Ice fusion, instead it wound its way into its own plot and widening scope of events these characters went through. The Loki we see in the beginning is young and far more naive than the one we know, because he's so much younger and his circumstances were different, but he grows older and becomes more cunning and becomes more and more the Loki we know from canon. The author does a gorgeous job of making him so interesting, so engaging, and building towards canon!Loki while also building up the Thor/Loki relationship, with Thor falling ever further in love with his husband, while Loki is so much more complicated. The author also does an amazing job of showing the political side of this union, of the incredibly fine line Loki has to walk, with all the pressure that's placed on him to be one thing or another. The author does an amazing job of working in the characters around Thor and Loki, so that their motivations all further make the plot that much more complicated! Loki's brother wants his throne back, Thor just wants to be with Loki, Odin is hard as hell to read, the other Asgardians are a constant pressure on Loki, and on and on and on.

I love the worldbuilding in this fic, I love that it sucked me right into the plot and the political machinations almost as much as it sucked me into the Thor/Loki relationship. It made me want to read every single arranged marriage fic that exists for this fandom because it hit me so perfectly on-target. It's still a work in progress, but it's almost 50k at least! And the only downside is that, augh, I don't know if I can wait for updates between chapters, not with how badly I need to know how this turns out. *claws at face* But it's totally worth reading what's here, I think it might just be one of my favorites in this fandom forever. (Thor/Loki, NSFW, some dub-con aspects, some violence.)
Chapters 11: Ahhhh, this fic. I know it wasn't that long ago that the author uploaded it to AO3 or posted the previous chapters, but some part of me had feared that I would never read more of it, which would have been terrible, because it's one of my very favorite fics in this fandom. And I love what this chapter of it accomplished! The parallels drawn between Loki and Sif, as she becomes his tutor now, are gorgeously done, the way they're not precisely friends, they way they still grate on each other a bit, but also there's a mutual respect that actually serves them both well. It's a fantastic way to draw Loki's character out more here, to make things first entangled and flesh the world out more, especially when contrasted against his scenes with Helblindi and the scheming that goes on around them. As much as the Thor and Loki relationship is definitely my favorite part of the story, seeing Loki interact with other characters, the way his acerbic and cutting comments lash out occasionally, even if just in his thought sometimes, all of it is so good and so well plotted and well paced.

Bedding the Wolf by leonidaslion, thor/loki + implied background thor/sif, NSFW, dub-con edging on non-con, 13.4k
If Sif thinks she's going to get away with wedding Loki's idiot brother, then she's sorely mistaken...

OR

Thor is smarter than Loki thinks he is...

Note: I have recommended this fic more than once, as it's one of my absolute favorite fics, one that hits my buttons perfectely. And I felt the need to talk about it a lot. :D
Rec #1: I will warn ahead of time that this fic has a lot of dark shades, that the warnings should definitely be paid attention to, along with a strong non-con warning. I'm recommending it anyway because this is Thor and Loki, where there is a lot of anger and these are Norse gods and they are rough and posessive and this is Loki who doesn't make things easy and this is Thor who smashes his way through so many things, even when there's just so much underneath all of it. In some ways, it's heartbreaking to read, because of the way Loki believes so little in himself in the eyes of others, how he believes everything he hears are lies and heartbreaking all the more because he's not always wrong. It's heartbreaking how much Thor loves him but can't get Loki to see. But this fic is all about Thor just smashing through that, by claiming Loki and pushing him down and he will have Loki in his bed, no matter how Loki fights him on it. It's not for those who have a strong dislike of non-con, but it can appeal to those who find interest in this sort of struggle, especially when it's layered on top of Loki so desperately wanting Thor, on top of how these two desperately need each other. In some ways, it's one long sex scene, but it's all about characterization and the super hot sexytimes, which hit my kink buttons something fierce. And it's so incredibly satisfying that Thor doesn't give up what he's set his mind on here, it's so incredibly satisfying to see their misunderstandings slowly breaking down, even if not perfectly, it will take time of course, but it's now one of my favorite fics because, yes, yes, I am all over posessive Thor and rough sex that's about laying claim to one another and all the fucking feelings this fic gave me. I can't lie, this is the kind of fic I desperately wish I could write myself because of how stunning it is.

Rec #2: This fic is one of the first I read in this fandom and, to this day, it's still one of my favorites. It's one of those fics that I get out every couple of weeks and reread the entire thing because it hits every button I have and every point I want from fic in this fandom. And, thus, I wanted to do a re-rec for it, one that's not just keyboard mashing and flailing, because I'm pretty sure that's what the previous one amounted to. As well as, whenever I try to reread that rec, I feel like I'm practically out of breath for the run-on sentences! The warnings I gave in it still apply--this is a dub-con fic with non-con elements, even as Loki has dreamed about this for ages. This is a fic with a chained down feeling to it, not in a way that's meant as punishment or meant to hurt him, because it's very clear that Thor loves him and wants to bring him home and keep him there, but it still has that pressed down feeling all the same. It's not for those who aren't into that sort of thing. As well as this fic has Thor/Sif as seen through the eyes of Loki, which means there's a lot of vitriol being spewed at her, but it's in the context of Loki hating her because he's jealous.

That said, it works for me because this Loki is still so incredibly sharp and poisonous and angry, he's brilliant and dangerous, it's just that Thor knows him better than anyone and is prepared for him this time. And I'm reading this for a myriad of reasons (the super hot sex, the power dynamics, the sharp Loki characterization, the beautiful writing, etc.) but one of the best things I walked away from this fic with was stunning Thor characterization, who has reached a point where he's decided what he wants to do about Loki and just does it. For all that Thor is more mature now, for all that he's grown up and started seeing his affect on others, he is still a character who always presses forward, who is an unstoppable force when he sets his mind to it. But it's more than just brute strength for how he handles Loki here. No, he'll never be as brilliant as Loki is, but he knows his brother and knows how to handle him and can occasionally outsmart him, when Loki isn't prepared or underestimates Thor. This is a Thor who has decided he wants Loki in his bed, he will have Loki, and takes what he wants. This is a Thor who is open and genuine and honest, but also pure strength and will. This is gorgeous Thor characterization.

And, even beyond that, it's the kind of thing that pushes my buttons--power dynamics, where Loki's anger is broken down through an inability to keep it up in the face of Thor's handling of him, it's super hot porn (and, boy, is it) woven together with brilliant character insight for both of them. And, oh, Thor bartering with Loki for what he wants (he wants to see Loki face to face, he wants Loki to call him "Brother" again, he wants to be able to kiss Loki properly), that is one of my favorite parts of this fic, because of the dynamics, but how it shows just how dear Loki is to him. With a lot of fic I reread, I skip right to the porn part, but this one? I read the magic wrestling match, I read the bartering for just how this will go down, I reread that Thor wouldn't change Loki being Jotunn even if he could, I reread the foreplay as much as I do the main event.

It's so many things that I love in fic--that mix of porn and insight! super hot sex! gorgeous characterization! beautiful writing! I end up rolling around in all my feels by the end every time!--that it's probably going to always and forever be my #1 rec in this fandom. It's why I'm indulging myself in such a super long re-rec for it, despite that the original rec wasn't that terrible. I just can't contain myself when it comes to this fic!

If You Built Yourself a Myth by cavaleira, thor/loki, NSFW, 27k
A magical artifact causes Thor's elemental powers to backfire and overload him, leaving him comatose and barely holding on as the power consumes him. Loki is the only one who can stop it, by going inside Thor's mind and helping him master the power once more. Loki must find his way through Thor's memories in a desperate bid to find the real Thor amongst the chaos before it's too late.
I stayed up far too late reading this, but I couldn't help myself because, oh, it was so good for me, both in the execution of it and in the concept of it. I love the whole "one person is in a coma, so the other has to go into their mind to find them again" and this fic just happily embraced that but also punched me in the feelings something terrible. The fic is set from Loki's point of view, so you feel his character the strongest, but Thor is solidly done here and you have no idea how much I love the God of Thunder!Thor moments, the scenes where even Loki is in awe of all this raw power that is Thor. But at the same time (as terrifying as Thor's anger can be or how awe-inspiring his powers are--and I am so glad that these were explored in the fic), this Thor loves deeply and his immovable in his love for Loki. The scenes where you realize what Thor wants from (with) Loki and the way he sees their childhood or how he tells real from dream (because Thor cannot be swayed from hope for Loki, but he know the reality of him, too) is heart-wrenching. There were at least three points where I nearly got a little misty-eyed because of everything between them and how Loki could not deny the truth of what he was seeing, both good and bad.

This was a fic that was about exploring the way Thor sees his brother, that there's so much he hopes for, but that even Thor has darker moments where he's angry or that he has considered giving up on his brother, the fic balancing beautifully that of course Thor thinks of these things with how thinking about something doesn't mean you do it, that part of Thor's character being so... Thor is that he isn't blind about how difficult this path is, this path of believing in the possibilities with Loki, but that he chooses to be on it. This is also a fic that's about taking Loki's bias apart a piece at a time until he had to face this, face that he was loved and his face was not as bitter as he made it to be. Combine those things and you have a fic that really just punches me right in the feelings. There was also references to specific moments in canon that worked so well because they're moments that define their lives (rather than feeling like the author was rehashing them for lack of anything better to do), like the coronation ceremony or the scene on the bridge, sometimes changing them, in such a way that of course this is how thoughts would twist, when you're mixing in what you want and what you fear and everything in between. There's also childhood memories and Loki reliving them as well, which, oh, my heart, and that helped set aside his bias long enough to really see.

And then there's the build up of the fic, to when they finally fuck and how satisfying that was, both emotionally and physically, how Loki couldn't deny his want, not for Thor, the undercurrent of remembering Thor being wounded and how that terrified Loki in a way he doesn't want to think about, how Thor sees that in him. It isn't just straight into the fucking, either, there's more things coming to a head here, it's not smooth sailing, there's a long conversation in the middle that's ouchy because it's necessary, because there's too much to clear away in just one trip through Thor's mind, even as huge as that one was. It takes more time than that, but that doesn't take away from how hot the sex was, either, when it's Loki sliding fingers into himself to prepare him and Thor pressing fingers in as well (jfc), how it's never the same as being filled up with Thor's cock (jfc), how this is the familiar desperation for Loki, how Thor clearly wants to fuck him, too, a mix of love and want.

And, oh, the ending is so, so completely perfect, perfect Loki, perfect Thor, perfect them. The accompanying artwork is also fantastic, the moments chosen to be drawn are gorgeous, both in the art and in the scenes chosen, making me further just... ridiculously dreamy-sighed over the fic. And, oh, the use of storm imagery, the sheer scale of it and how it felt awe-inspiring to me as well, or the use of lightning playing over Thor's hands and in his eyes, the rain lashing at both of them when they're in the middle of it, that this is a storm god, oh, it's all gorgeous.

feel my bones ignite by Lise, thor/loki, NSFW, rough sex, mild bdsm elements, 6.6k
It's very difficult to maintain intentions of a moderate, controlled conversation when Loki gets involved.
Sometimes you love an author's work so much on such a consistent basis that you have trouble finding the words to describe it because it just simply feels like an immutable fact. For me, trying to describe why Lise's writing is so good is like trying to describe how water is wet. But, oh, I want to do it for this fic, because it is so incredible and so breathtakingly good at everything it sets out to do! Her Loki is as vicious as ever, in a way that is utterly spot on and so true to character, but also her Thor is utter perfection as well. The hope he has, the aching heavy heart he has when Loki keeps spitting at him, the way his temper is deliberately goaded by this perfect Loki who is almost gleeful in the way he attacks, yet there's something so desperately pained underneath that. The sex is only half the reason I'm recommending this fic, the other half is because of the incredible characterization here.

But, oh, the sex is still the other half of this piece. Because, there's this beautifully intense argument back and forth, constantly winding the tension tigher and tighter and then there's fucking Loki up against the wall in this stunningly gorgeous mix of anger and possessiveness and love. It's Thor, through and through, the weight and intensity of the character are captured here. And I said the sex was painfully good, yes? The marathon sex was satisfying on both a physical and emotional level that I literally flopped back in my chair afterwards. Lise builds everything up perfectly, so there's this long stretch of achingly good sex and feels and I would have loved this fic just for the first 3/4ths of the fic. But that last quarter? Jesus fuck, no, it's too perfect in what it says about both of them, what they each want, and in what I hope for. I can't deal with it. The morning after scene that I never dared hope for, it just makes everything even better, which I hadn't thought possible, especially for the way Loki acts after so many of his defenses have crumbled and he's trying to rebuild, the way Thor handles him afterwards, just. This is the fic I wish I could write, this is the fic that makes me love them both, this is the brilliant fic that is like it's in my head, only Lise writes it better. New favorite.

Faceless by thefirstwhokneels, thor/loki, NSFW, anonymous sex, 6.4k
There is a special tavern in Asgard where, in complete anonymity, anyone can have their desire granted. Both Thor and Loki share the passion for what the tavern provides - it is only that they don't know it of each other...
A story like this runs the risk of losing intimacy or being awkward enough to give me second-hand embarrassment, because of the anonymity of the sex and the inability to see your partner's face or talk to them. But the fic keeps the intimacy with just enough communication through body language that I stayed connected to it. The mid-scene rotating povs was not only not distracting but enhanced the fic, where the author chose really good moments to do a 180 whip around, so I liked the structure as well as the story itself! Loki enjoying the anonymity, both for something like punishment (whether of himself, of his title, of those who hold him to the role he has, or some combination of all those) combined with his enjoyment of people not knowing he might have had sex with them really worked for me--it's another reason why the anonymous/faceless sex doesn't make me uncomfortable in this story. Thor's reasons for going to this tavern, where you couldn't see the person you were having sex with, were solid as well, which is important when you're not just going for pwp fic. Well, it is pwp fic, largely, but it's more than that, too.

Because there was characterization here and there was care put into the very delicate balance between keeping them as themselves, of giving them some communication with each other that was true to each of their personalities, but not so much that they wouldn't recognize each other. Add into this that each was (if lightly) reminded of their sibling and yet still didn't make the connection, that's a fragile line to walk, but it really worked for me here! And then there was the sex itself, which was lengthy and detailed and filthy and scorching hot. The hints of Thor teasing him before properly fucking him, the keeping Loki just on the edge of coming, which completely wrecks his cool, so that he's desperate for more and writhing against the bed, and finally Thor practically holding him up to fuck him? Jfc. The sheer powerf of Thor, felt even anonymously was so hot. What a great read, especially if you're in the mood for porn + sharp characterization.

Unmasked by thefirstwhokneels, thor/loki, NSFW, anonymous sex, 10k
Sequel to Faceless. Thor and Loki don't know of each other that they visit the same special tavern for special needs... Can this stay forever this way, or like every secret, it's bound to be revealed, too?
Once again, this fic skirts around potential awkwardness and second-hand embarrassment, instead making this something good, the way Loki enjoys being taken like this and it's a subtle reflection of his relationship with Thor, while continuing to maintain believability that they don't put two and two together. That balance is such a delicate thing to build, but when there's a moment Loki is asking for Thor's trust, who realizes this is a test, despite that neither of them know who the other is still, it's a tense but great moment, because you recognize both characters, you recognize Loki putting a test to his partner, you recognize Thor understands this because of his relationship with Loki. And that's even before the sex gets even hotter, because Thor passes the test and then Loki's riding him, teasing him, until Thor thrusts up hard into him and, oh, I was nearly done right there.

But the fic continues on and you know eventually they have to find out. The reveal was intense and satisfying in an explosive way, which is important when you have Big Revelations, that the moment be satisfying after all the build up to it, and the fic finds the sweet spot between how horrified they are and yet not going too far into horror to ruin the fun of that moment. And this fic has really excellent Thor characterization, when he won't just back off from the tension between them, even if he doesn't quite know how to fix it, he keeps trying. It's fantastic for how it doesn't make Thor helpess or overly hesitant but neither does it let up on Loki's wrath, Thor's reactions were just as important to the scene.

And when he comes back from the hunt? Still in hunter mode and you feel the presence of the god of thunder? Jfc, no wonder Loki was so desperately turned on. This is build up, where Thor has had it with the tension between them, he loves Loki and enjoys fucking him and so he's going to have him and the sex is again lengthy and powerful, like Thor is unleashing one his storms on Loki. And there's still playfulness there, but that power Thor has, when he keeps fucking Loki through a second orgasm, when he pushes Loki's face down and grabs Loki's hips to roll into him, all that sheer power and presence, all that storm god might, it is the hottest fucking thing. Admittedly, it's one of my favorite things, so it hit my buttons especially hard, but this is absolutely a worthy follow up to the previous fic and resolved absolutely everything that needed to be done, emotionally and physically.

Ghosts That We Knew by umakoo, thor/loki, NSFW, reunion fic, thor 2 spoilers, 9.6k
"My crimes are no greater than Odin’s,” Loki says, and the flippant tone in his voice makes Thor’s nostrils flare. “Everything I did, I did for Asgard, for you-" "You did it for Loki," Thor snarls, jostling Loki against the shelf, sending old trophies clattering across the floor. "Why did you even bother coming back? You could have left and never looked back. There is nothing for you here."
I hardly even know where to begin with this fic, because it's so beautiful and satisfying and just what I wanted! It's reunion fic that does everything it needs to do, where it acknowledges the weight of the actions that canon gave us and yet doesn't give up hope, despite that these two have such a long road ahead of them, given where they are and what's happened and how willing they are/aren't to change for the better. This is only a ~10k fic, so it can't cover everything, you would need a 100k fic for that, which I would happily read like it was nothing if umakoo wrote it, let me tell you, but I love that this is still incredibly satisfying. That it doesn't fix absolutely everything, but gets them back on a better path and touches on all the things necessary along the way, making me happy and light-hearted in the right places and ouchy in all the other right places. It hits the necessary emotional notes and gives me porn!

This fic also has a moment of realization, where Thor realizes the truth, and it's so good, that moment where everything just breaks apart, the kind you practically get antsy to see the reveal, and this lives up to the build-up of it! As well as the emotional aftermath of that scene, where it's that excellent blend of Thor really does love Loki, but this was a betrayal and he's rightly angry about it, the fic manages to find that balance between doing justice to that anger at Loki while still moving them towards a better, happier place. The thought and care that went into this fic is felt with every scene, how thoroughly the author has considered both their characters--my greatest affection is for umakoo's Thor who is so very Thor, who loves so deeply and who is a positive person at heart, but his anger is pretty terrifying and I love how that affects Loki, who cannot stand being ignored and cut out of Thor's life. The fic uses that beautifully, even while we don't see Loki in a lot of the scenes, you can feel the progression of his character in the background, which is a perfect balance to strike.

Add in that the sex is ridiculously hot when they finally do come back together, the way Thor knows Loki and the way Loki so badly wants Thor, the way he's not entirely different but Thor pries something real out of him, how Loki had to do genuine work (and not just bribery and, oh, this fic knows the difference and that's so good) and he faced real consequences without being cruel and still doing justice to the weight of his crimes. Everything about this is just so incredibly saitsfying and what I wanted after the movie that I find myself in love with fandom again. Definitely a must read for post-Thor 2 fic!

The Sound of Letting Go by Velvedere, thor/loki + background characters, mildly nsfw, 35k
He was going to do it. Thor knew he was going to do it. He had seen that look before. That look echoed across a childhood of stolen nights and broken trespasses. Of dangers fought, revisited, and conquered. It was the look in Loki’s eyes when he’d made up his mind.
Oh, man, LET ME AT ALL THE FIC that has Thor falling with Loki, because that's one of those things I wish happened more often in fandom and this fic used the premise beautifully. I will warn that the writing is rather 'stacatto' in that there are very short sentences, even shorter than I usually prefer. It's a style preference, but one that I fear may keep others from reading, which it shouldn't! It both smooths out in the second half and you become accostumed to it, as well as the author does all the things necessary that a story like this needs. It gives the characters the needed breathing room after the events of the first movie, so that Loki can calm down and Thor can spend the time trying to understand Loki better. It gives them just enough distraction, as they land on Alfheim and get wrapped up in an adventure, to be around each other without crowding the other for long enough that things simmer down and the attraction between them can bloom.

The lovely thing about this is that it doesn't deny the things that were rather broken before, not unrepairably so, but that it wasn't all sunshine and roses. Yet, you can feel that there was such love and affection there, Thor loves Loki and they may have both changed, but they are still the core of who they have always been. That's another lovely thing about this fic, how they do change, but it feels like a natural one, both in Thor maturing and making the adjustment to thinking of Loki as a lover would, as well as Loki not being the half-feral person he was in The Avengers, but not quite as he was in the first movie, either. It struck a balance of all these things while the events of the story unfolded, they progressed in their relationship.

The loveliest thing, though, for me was the way Loki tried so hard to keep hold of his bitterness and anger, but he couldn't, not with Thor being genuine at him and refusing to be moved on the idea of letting Loki go. Because Thor believes in him and refuses to give up on him, because he is unmovable in this, Loki cannot help coming undone for him. And the way it's half-deliberate on Thor's part, but half just their natural dynamic, oh, that did a lot of good for me, too. And I loved the way the author also balanced the world-building here, the way this was an entire world fleshed out for them to inhabit while they were working their issues out, with fight scenes and monsters and other Realms and mythology elements, all having a natural feel to them that fit with the characters so well.

The author also had a talent for writing scenes that were fraught with such delicious tension or had things coming to such a head (or nearly coming to a head) that I was practically tripping over myself to get to the next bit, because I had to know what happened! There's a scene about 3/4ths of the way through (the climax of the overall story, really) that's just beautifully done, for how these two finally break through all that's between them and Thor finally reaches Loki, so incredibly emotionally satisfying! There's not much sex in the fic, but what's here is lovely (the image of Loki first riding Thor, then going to his hands and knees for another round was just, mmm, yes, that's good for me) and it furthers the sense of emotional satisfaction. Even the ending, when they return to Asgard, is lovely for how that unfolds, and everything is just perfectly satisfying, I needed nothing more than this. What a satisfying, lovely read that I'm almost sorry to have finished now, because I enjoyed it so much.

If Thor wants to become King of Asgard, he must first take a frost giant to be his queen. No one is happy with this. And yet, somehow, happiness is found.
I was really tempted to recommend each of these fics separately, because I enjoyed each of them for different things, but... to be honest, I read them all in one sitting and I'm not sure I could separate them out again at this point. Because, wow, did I tear through these. :9 I actually let out a ridiculous sort of noise when I saw they'd been posted, because I've liked everything I've read by this author and then arrainged marriage with Jotunn!intersex!Loki and eventually babies? Holy shit, it's like it was a Christmas present just for me! And, oh, it was so good. This is a universe where Thor and Loki weren't raised together, so they never affected each other growing up, which means they're a lot brattier here than they would otherwise be in canon, and that works so well, especially as they're forced together and eventually start to care about each other and positively effect each other.

One of the best things about this universe, though, is Loki's characterization, which is pretty exquisite, in the way he's really hard to pin down what he really means. He's polite and manipulative and funny and charming and there's something real there, too, in the way that only Thor's directness and honesty and genuinely growing love for him can bring out. The author uses each of the problems from their bingo card incredibly well, showing different moments along the timeline of their marriage, doing a gorgeous job of showing that they don't actually know each other, because how could they? And the little ways that affects them! So, by the time Thor is asking Loki on a proper date when they've been married for a year already and have a baby as well, it's just... it's a backwards courtship and it's perfect.

The other thing I love, of course, is that the fic has all these sharp edges and moments where things are a bit painful (Loki's reaction to the idea of celebrating their marriage or any time he explains just what he's going through and why his actions may seem so weird, there's this undercurrent of anger that he hides well, but you can feel it sometimes), but it's not a heartbreaking fic. It's fun and cute and light-hearted and does so with fantastic characterization. All my favorite tropes, fantastic writing, excellent characterization, and over 17k of it. Just. Fandom blessed me this day.

Loki has always seen Thor at his regular bar every Friday night after work. But once they start talking, everything begins to change and soon, Loki begins questioning everything that he thought he knew about himself.
Sometimes you find one of those fics that you love so much you kind of hate it a little. I thought I was signing up for a cute modern AU fic, where Thor and Loki meet in a bar and begin a relationship and everything is adorable and fun, with maybe some sexytimes on the side. Then, halfway through the fic, it proceeds to shift into the next gear and completely enthrall me, becoming one of my new favorites in this fandom. And I'm going to stop at this point and mention that, while I won't spoil the whole thing, I am going to mention some things that you might otherwise want to be a surprise. So, consider this a SPOILER WARNING for the rest of the fic.

It builds slowly at first, but you kind of have an idea, as soon as Loki starts having dreams of golden hallways where he's searching for someone. It was intriguing and I was hoping for a good payoff, maybe reincarnated versions of Thor and Loki, maybe a connection to another reality--instead, the way the fic spun its tale from there, the way Loki recovered his memories, the way the background was slowly filled in as things came back to him, the way it tore apart this new relationship he had with Thor, the way the old relationship flooded back in, it was breathtakingly good. It was one of those fics that was gorgeously written, where I couldn't have pulled away from reading it, even if I'd wanted to. Not as this new relationship, free from the burden of everything that had happened previously between them, so much newer and happier and lighter, was building and then certainly not when Loki remembered all the vicious anger and resentment and hatred and unending love he had for his brother.

The way the author wrote Loki's character was stunning, the way the author wrote both of these relationships layered over each other, the way the background details of just what had happened to cause them to be banished and mortal and memoryless, all of it was brilliant. The emotional impact was tremendous, I felt everything right along with the characters, and, oh, the ending, that just left me in a puddle of my own feels for hours afterwards. And, oh, as if all that weren't excellent enough, if an amazing execution of an idea I love wasn't enough, nope, this author gifted us with super hot sex in the story as well. I don't know which part I wanted to reread more, the way they were insatiable and so very into each other and super hot together, or the emotionally charged moments that were like punches to my feelings. Both. Both were so good for me.

Post-Avengers, Thor brings Loki to face Odin's decree: he is stripped of his magic and confined to the palace but his true punishment is to be disowned and forced into his jotun form. Thor begins the slow process of trying to repair his relationship with Loki, and along the way discovers five new things about the jotun and one about himself.
Every once in awhile, you get one of those fics that leaves you feeling satisfied again, that you don't need anything else from the fandom that day, because something was just so good as it was. The fic gave me pretty much everything I could have asked for--lovely writing, lovely characterization, fantastic world building, moments of humor, and the tropes I fucking love in this fandom done in a sharp, clever way. To the point that it's kind of amazing how much the author managed to pack in with under 10k, while still feeling like it didn't skip out on anything. The fic manages to take Loki almost immediately post-Avengers and show the progression of his calming down and his interaction with Thor, that slowly grows into something more, to the resolution of the UST between them, and showing us the future of their relationship, all set against a backdrop of exploring a bit of Jotunn biology and culture.

I never felt short-changed while reading this, the author knew what scenes and moments needed to be shown between the characters and those that could be inferred, so instead of this being a long, grueling process, instead you still feel the weight of it, the time it takes and all the long hours of bitterness and anger and frustration (on both sides) slowly giving way to something better, but it's a happy process. Not that I didn't have my feelings punched a little, but it's overall a happy piece, just very barbed and sharp along the way. Plus, oh, Loki in heat and Thor enjoying the hell out of Loki's intersex form and then the absolutely beautiful, I'm not even little bit kidding A+++ epilogue? Yes, way to make me happy again in this fandom. All of this on top of some satisfying porn where Loki demands Thor to hurry the hell up and fuck him already? Yes, please. Demanding!Loki about Thor taking too long is one of those things I shall never tire of. Never.

This was a fantastic read, one of those I recommend to pretty much anyone, but especially if you're like me and you love these tropes and you love happy endings and you love them working their shit out (and you LOVE LOVE LOVE Frigga interacting with her sons, as well as an A+ moment with Odin at the end), but you love it when it also comes with emotional weight behind it. I am happy once again now.

When old man Odinson dies he leaves his sons two things: A thriving auto tuning shop and a lot of baggage. The latter mostly belongs to Loki who is sick of driving in Thor's slipstream. Time for a change in leadership. What ensues is a plan that gets resurrected often enough to start the zombie apocalypse all on its own, explosions, dealings with overly invested reporters, epiphanies about heritage, a generous amount of illegal street racing, and the fact that what you get isn't always what you wanted but might very well be what you needed.
Speaking of fic that totally ruined me for any further reading for a ridiculously long amount of time! I hesitated over this one because, well, when I read AU fic, I usually go for the fantasy/fairy tale trope instead of modern AUs, especially street racing modern AUs. But, well, I liked Initial D well enough, so I knew I probably wouldn't totally hate a street racing Thor/Loki AU. I did not expect to fall totally goddamned in love with this fic! It helps that it's nearly 45k long, so I had time to really sink into it, but it was more in the way the author wove a brilliant world for the characters, one that echoed much of the Thor movie itself, while also not being beholden to it or getting bogged down with it. It set up the resentment Loki had towards Thor, his plotting behind Thor's back, even as he desperately loved Thor, the situation with Laufey looming over them, all of it was gorgeously woven together with a street racing/heist AU scenery that really, really fit together with it. And the characterization was beautiful, not just for how it kept the spirit of the original movie canon, but for how sharp and vicious this Loki could be, but how that was tempered with genuine care, you saw what Thor saw in him. And you saw what everyone saw in Thor, why everyone loved him so much, even as you also saw why Loki resented him.

The story didn't skimp on the actual plot to it, there were car races and action scenes (it was not primarily an action story, the scenes were light, the focus was on the emotional aspect and the talking/planning, but it wasn't unsatisfying in the sense of an action plot, either), there was even a reveal of Loki's true parentage and, ahhhh, everything about this was so good. I was here for the Thor/Loki relationship, which was definitely the heart of the story, and the trappings were icing on the cake, but all of it was so, so delicious. Though, yeah, no, the build-up to the explosions between Thor and Loki, the utter heartache I have for these two characters, the utter satisfaction at the resolution they find together, all of that fucking ruined me for the rest of the night because it was so damned good. Even as the ending was perfect, even as I couldn't think of anything more to ask for (besides more sexytimes, but I always want more of that), I did not want this fic to end.

This is one of the first pieces I read after seeing the movie for the first time, because my immediate reaction was GIVE ME ALL THE THOR/LOKI PORNOS, INTERNET afterwards. Naturally, I hit up AO3's archive and found this one early on and I am very grateful for it being one of my first. It's a gorgeously written fic about what happens with Thor bringing Loki home to Asgard, everything that's between them, both painful and some things that are still almost good, how much love and anger are both between them. The writing is brilliantly deft at portraying both characters, nailing their characterization and making this feel like an incredibly natural extension of the events of the movies, giving me absolutely zero trouble seeing all of this in my mind's eye. It was exactly what I wanted from post-movie fic, something that was about the attraction between them coming to a head, but not making any of it easy. The details and subtlety and Loki's manipulations, because everything he ever says is a manipulation, and even the ending are absolutely pitch perfect and I could not have asked for a better post-movie fic. This was honestly everything I wanted, right down to gorgeous, gorgeous sexytimes. It was the perfect piece to start me on my Thor/Loki READ ALL THE FICS!!! journey.

After reading the previous fic by this author, well, naturally I had to seek out the other ones and I read this one next. It's not as weighted as the first one, it's not meant to be, instead it's more of an almost sweet piece. Not that anything is ever sweet with Thor and Loki anymore, but it's before everything falls apart, but still dealing with that intense attraction between them that's hard for both of them to deal with. The author's gorgeous characterization and gorgeous sexytimes are just as wonderfully done here--to the point that, I picked this piece up for the bathtimes sexytimes, but wound up loving it just for the pure characterization and pure super pretty sexytimes themselves. Ugh, I am getting so spoiled for this fandom.

The one thing in all the realms that his trickery cannot shift, around which his magic cannot maneuver.
There is something this fic that is... both good and heartbreaking. Something that's terribly complicated and difficult to explain, even in a rec, in a way that's breathtaking perfect for Thor and Loki. It's the way Loki loves him so desperately, but there's also hate there, it's how possessive he is of both those feelings inside him, the eternal struggle of them both, even if one has maybe tipped the balance a bit more to one side. It's in the gorgeous use of language, one of my favorites being the way to describe the sun and moon's rise and fall, ever chasing each other, in a way that works perfectly for Loki. It's in the way that Thor's love for Loki is something that is a weakness to Loki, but is also a power he has over Thor as well. It's in the way sex is used here, how sometimes it's about one thing, another time it's about Loki letting Thor fuck all the thoughts out of his head for awhile. There are times, I'm sure, when Loki/Mjolnir has been used poorly in fic, but this author winds it together with how the hammer is like an extension of Thor, that's why it's so meaningful, the way it's not forgotten that Loki cannot move, yet it's not cruel, because the hammer seems to almost like Loki in its own way. And the Thor characterization is gorgeous, because he's so good-hearted and loves Loki so dearly and lets Loki come to him, even when he can see that Loki is not to rights yet, that Loki is still ever falling and falling in his head. And, somehow, the author manages to make this fic not heartbreaking, somehow manages that Loki, in all his complex anger and bitterness and desperate want, is a little better than he was before. All that, plus super, super hot sexytimes and a delightfully teasing, humorous ending. This fic was so satisfying that I can't even say.

“Is this supposed to shame me, Thor? I thought you could do better. But I should have known.” Loki bares his teeth and when he speaks into Thor’s ear he makes sure his words bite. “There’s not enough good in you to take the bad out of me.”
So, when you see a fic labeled "Loki/Mjolnir" and "pwp", you go into it with a certain mindset. You really only expect to read it for the smutty satisfaction, especially if you've been reading genfic all day and just want some makeouts already. You don't expect to be left feeling a little breathless by the characterization by the time it's done! But, oh, this fic was so good for me. It's sharp and painful in a lot of ways, this is Loki freshly back from Midgard after The Avengers, so he's still so damaged and angry and hurt, while Thor is still trying to help him but is now full of a lot of anger, too, and, oh, the way they get under each others' skin, the way they wind each other up is so very cutting here. One of the best things about this fic for me was the way Loki kept lashing out, especially when Thor's anger began to pass, when he started to soften, Loki wouldn't be able to stand it, and would lash out again, until Thor snaps and rips his clothes off and fucks him first with Mjolnir, then directly fucking him and it's not nice at all, but it's not mean, either. There's as much love and obsession with each othere here as there is anger and fury, that Loki is a tangle of emotions both good and bad. And, oh, some of the lines in this fic. The one from the summary--“There’s not enough good in you to take the bad out of me.”--is especially just... perfect. Yes, the sex is angrysex that is SUPER HOT and I would have loved it for that alone, because it was really satisfying and did not pull any of its punches and made everything about the fic more intense and just better, but the additional characterization and interaction. Ugh, this is immediately going on my list of absolute favorites in this fandom and I'm going to drag it out every so often to reread, because, jesus, that ending. Hot and perfect and aching and satisfying and so good.

The Aesir won't accept a king who would ride into battle and be unable to tell enemy from ally; and so when his berserker nature is discovered, Thor and Loki's inheritances and roles are upended drastically. But some things never change.
I am going to write an absolutely terrible rec for this fic and I'm going to be entirely frustrated with myself about that because, jesus christ, I sat down with this fic and read all ~36k that was available practically in one sitting and could not tear myself away from it at all. There is so much I would love to talk about with this fic, but I fear it's scrambled my thoughts to the point that I'm just going to keyboard mash my way through it, despite that I even made some notes after reading it. One of the things that is most difficult to convey, to even just put into coherent thought rather than something I've simply felt, is that role reversal AUs generally don't do much for me, because the idea seems neat at first, but too often the spirit of the characters are lost. This fic keeps those spirits brilliantly well, where this is truly a fic that takes the characters from the source and puts them into a new universe and shows how they would be shaped there, how they would react there, making them recognizable and different at the same time.

It's probably most noticeable with Loki, which I'll get to in a minute, but I found that it was Thor who captured my attention even more than him, partly because I love Thor so much, but partly because he can be a difficult character to capture, especially in circumstances where he grows up as the less trusted of the royal sons, and yet still make him so very Thor. His berserker rages and terrifying strength are there, they are always there, and they are legitimately terrifying, because this is a Thor with less control and with so much less emotional support than even canon Thor had. Which means he is still a good person at heart, this is still a Thor who is recognizable in how he does not want to hurt others, in how deeply and genuinely he loves, how he is still direct and thoughtful and genuine, but adding in so much less control of his rage and a hunger for more than what he has, because he gets so little affection here. And that new layer of danger and rage to him, that's always simmering under the surface, that sheer amount of terrifying power that's fueled by the berserker, it's both breathtaking and brilliantly told.

There are at least five different lines in this fic that I remember pausing over because they struck right at the heart of Thor's character and Loki's relationship with him, especially in the way that Loki is still Loki, even when he's the favored son, that does not mean he suddenly makes friends easily or is any more genuine with people than he was in canon. And he knows Thor is charismatic and genuine and otherwise all the things that draw people to him and make them loyal to him, in a way that Loki will never have. And, oh, the fic uses this beautifully, in new and brilliantly twisty ways, to make their relationship all the more complicated, both good and bad, just as it should be. So, it's not just that Thor is beautifully in character, but that his relationship with Loki is as well.

And, oh, Loki. This is a gorgeous look at him, right down to how he has so little sense of self that there's a constant undercurrent of how he tries so hard to be something he's not so much of the time. There's a bit more ability of him to let go, to carve out little spaces where he can be himself, which is why I love love loved the brief scene he has with the OMC, where it's entirely about his feelings for Thor and what Loki really wants (and how ridiculously hot it was, given that the scene balances that it's about Loki and an OMC, but also the heart of it is really about Loki's feelings for Thor), how it's a moment of weakness that says so much about how unhappy he is and how restricted he makes himself, trying to be the perfect prince of Asgard who is not attracted to the utter terrifying storm that his brother is. This is a Loki who is constantly calculating, who feels strung tight enough that he's ready to snap, who desperately wants to prove himself but also doesn't know how to make himself happy.

I picked this fic up for berserker!Thor and that alone would have been satisfying, especially in the brief moments of fighting and chasing we get, how genuinely terrifying those moments are! But it's exquisite writing and characterization and balance of what this role reversal storyline is trying to achieve and trying to keep true to the canon while still showing the snowballing effects of this different universe. There's even exploration of Loki on Midgard, as he finds the weak spots between the worlds, and that's fascinating to read about, how he so looks down on the mortals and how they're practically like playthings to him, and yet it's not about being a monster, it's simply about being a god among mortals, and what it displays about Loki as a character, as he tries to learn more about the human berserkers. And, of course, how everything comes back to Thor.

So, after writing that novel, I still feel like I hardly got into talking about what I wanted to say about this fic, that my bird's eye view of the writing may be semi-useful for a rec (or would have been more useful if I could have kept this more focused and coherent) but, man, I want to really vomit up feelings about this fic, which means. GO READ THIS FUCKING FIC so we can mutually barf up every feeling we've ever had together.

Even the Golden Odinson has a dirty little secret.
Jesus Christ this fic could have pretty much been written just for me! This is one of those fics that bumps up against the non-con line to the point that some readers may not be comfortable with it, but I found that it worked for me because of two things. One, probably most importantly, is because this is idfic and the writing of the fic wholly embraces that, given the way Thor's actions are treated here and the way the story is tagged. Two, because Thor's treatment of Loki is contrasted against the treatment of other people he has sex with, the way he treats Loki is entirely differenlty from them, how Thor completely loses any arousal he had when his wife is reluctant and upset by their sex, her tears completely kill any desire he had to bed her. And that's entirely genuine, he doesn't enjoy hurting her whatsoever, only continues because he feels obligated by the necessity of the situation. You combine these two things and you have a recipe for a fic that's not going to be for everyone but I found that, by the end of the fic, I was utterly and completely in love.

A lot of this is because of the build-up, where Loki clearly enjoys that Thor wants to pin him down, he practically lights up when he discovers this about Thor, and you can practically see his wheels turning, even from Thor's point of view. Loki even enjoys the sex, for all that he protests (again, not a line everyone is going to be comfortable on and that's okay!), and the author finds this balance between power plays and Loki being a manipulative little shit. That and it's just ridiculously hot sex, it's a combination of love and anger wound together with these two, it's all about how Thor finally wants to pin his slippery and wily brother down already and enjoys taking him apart (with his dick) when he does. The way the author builds up the tension between the characters, the banter they have that shows their long familiarity with each other and that they're such brothers when they so casually and easily slip into shit talking, the way they act around each other!

Yet, for all that they're brothers, there's something more lurking under the surface between them and you feel that the entire way through this fic, until it finally comes to a head and Loki goads Thor into finally unleashing his temper and his wants. The way he straddles Thor's lap and talks about his cunt, the way Thor does want to touch it and explore it, the way he hauls Loki into bed once he's been goaded and tells him to spread his legs so Thor can see what he's got, that utterly delicious bit of roughness between them that works so well. And, wow, this was actually really excellen Thor characterization, from the way he sticks his dick into just about anything that moves to the way he loves Loki but won't just give him whatever he wants no matter how Loki promises to behave to the way his temper is quick to flare when it comes to Loki, because Loki is that one thing Thor will never be wholly emotionally healthy about. It's a bit on the dark side from what I usually read, but this author pulled it off and it was fantastic.

At the conclusion of the war between the Aesir and the Jotnar, Laufey not only takes his choice of spoils from Odin's treasury, but also claims his eldest son as a hostage. Concealing his parentage from Thor would be easier were it not that an Aesir can't bear a jotun's touch--at least not a full-blooded one's.
Well, I was up far too long reading this fic last night. But, once I'd started it, even taking breaks here and there, I couldn't entirely walk away until I'd finished it, because it's a fic with the roles reversed, where Thor is taken as a hostage and raised as a prince of Jotunheim instead of Loki in Asgard. I feel like I've been waiting for this fic to be done this well for ages, because I like the idea, but it's something that has to be so carefully approached and needed to be 30k words long just to do the necessary groundwork! But, oh, this author did what was the really important part--Thor raised in different circumstances would still be Thor in that alternate situation, which he was here. Even touch-starved, even as the least favored son, he was still loyal and honest and stubborn and good-hearted and had that incredible inherent strength.

One of the best parts of the fic was the Loki scenes where he knew what Thor could accomplish if he weren't holding back or being held back, that that strength of his would allow him to just take whatever he wanted. And that is Thor, because he wouldn't, but his physical strength is as such, even as magic allows others to fight more evenly with him. (The berserker rages he goes into, ones that have never really been learned to be tempered are all the more gorgeous for these different circumstances and how they worry Thor, scare him that he would kill everything in his path if he couldn't come out of it.)

And that's one of those things, when you put Thor as the less favored son, you run the risk of weakening his presence in a fic, that he'd get overwhelmed by the sharpness of Loki's character. But that's not the case here--he isn't the same egostical, arrogant prince he was in the beginning of Thor, but that doesn't mean he's not still Thor. That he continues to train every day, that he continues to seek Loki out even when Loki is near to impossible to be around, even when he keeps standing up, no matter how much is placed on his shoulders, that determination and strength of will is purely Thor. But, then, neither does the characterization of Loki suffer, either! He's so complicated here, so contradictory even to himself and, oh, that's so spot on for him.

This is a fic that's about an actual plot, so many gorgeous details being worked in of what happened in the war (and how that means everything is different, with Jotunheim's invasion of Midgard, with the lack of the Aesir presence around), there's so much happening in the background with Odin rebuilding the Aesir and Asgard, with Loki unable to stay out of trouble because he's not content to just stay it Utgard, with Loki long having known that Thor isn't biologically his brother, all of that is happening in the fic and it's beautifully paced for that. But, at it's heart, it's a story about Thor and Loki's relationship, how much Loki loves his brother and is unable to let him go, even when he knows it would be better for him. Even when he knows that Thor will not see things as he does, when that will bring trouble between them that would be better to wash his hands of it, he loves Thor too much. And Thor loves Loki just as much, even when Loki's words and actions are basically treason, of course he would choose Loki over everything else.

And the other lovely thing that this fic did, one of those that really sucked me into the writing, was that it mirrored the original movies in a lot of ways, there were little--and some big--parallels, the way some things would always unfold in similar ways, the way Mjolnir was similar to the use of the Casket in the original movie, but not entirely the same. That's such an important for me thing when you're writing an AU fic like this, when it deals with some of the same themes and underlying issues that the original movie did, but not being strictly beholden to them. It made the ending all the more thrilling for it, because this is a different situation, so the ending would be different, because Thor is not Loki, so he wouldn't react in the same way, even if their circumstances were similar. And, oh, it's certainly captured my imagination to daydream a bit about where their lives would take them after the end of the fic, but I think I almost prefer that slight open-ended quality, because the ending was perfect as it was.

All of this, as well as a really nicely done sex scene because, oh, Loki sitting across Thor's lap, working himself open with his own hand, so he can slide down onto Thor? Riding him until Thor can't take it anymore and rolls them over and fucks into him more intensely? Jesus fuck, that's one of those things that's on my list of things I'm forever weak to, especially when they're super fucking hot like they were here. Plot and porn and a happy (for them) ending and excellent writing/pacing/details? Yes. I don't care if I'm spoiled by this fandom, I want it forever.

The Saga of Loki and the Wyrms of Titan by Goblin Cat KC, thor/loki + avengers + thanos, 26k wip
Loki does what he does best – make trouble and have someone get him out of it again. With a dungeon escape, trolling the Avengers, and thwarting an alien invasion.
There's no way I'm going to be able to remember everything I wanted to say about this fic, which is frustrationg because this is so much the post-Avengers Thanos fic that I want so far! But I guess the best way for me to describe my feelings about this fic is... this is a weird image, I know, but every once in awhile, I read a fic that gives me the mental image of myself grabbing great handfuls of the story and chomping down on them, inhaling scene after scene because it's so good and I can't stop. How many times I meant to put the fic down for a bit, but, oh, just one more scene, just let me get through one more conversation, then I'll stop.... I read through all 26k words of this and, yeah, okay, it's not finished yet and I'm going to be clawing the walls for the rest of it, but I absolutely do not regret starting this fic at all.

Everyone is exquisitely in character--well, mostly it's Loki that the story spends the majority of the time with, but there's also several scenes with Thor and appearances by the other Avengers and Fury, all of which the author just absolutely nails down beautifully. The premise of the fic is that things are more complicated with Loki, that his true motivations and reasons haven't been fully unveiled yet, but now that he's escaped Asgard and is on the run from Thanos and working to keep building up the Avengers, he's in over his head and certain things become a lot more apparent. Like Loki may still be a little shit, but their goals may not be entirely different. And, oh, this fic absolutely does not forget that Loki is unhinged and dangerous and damaged, even while it's also exploring how desperately he wants Thor to protect him again, to be safe with Thor. Every scene he shares with Thor is so incredibly emotionally satisfying for how stubborn Loki is, how one wrong thing sets him off again, but also Thor is starting to put more of the pieces together (especially as Loki's motivations are being revealed) and his determination to help his little brother is perfect. There's a scene where Loki is wounded and Thor has picked him up to carry him to safety and is going to feed him a golden apple to help him heal, where Loki tries to refuse simply because Loki is stubborn and Thor just presses on with him anyway, force feeding him (by taking a bit of the apple himself and kissing Loki to press it into him, then holding him until he swallows), in a way that was so perfect to the character, that that's when I knew the fic had me.

The relationship between them isn't smooth or suddenly perfect again, because there's still that tremendous weight of everything that's happened between them, as well as the reveal of Loki using the Avengers to defeat the Chitauri and Thanos doesn't suddenly make everything good again, because he's still lost and still vicious and the old wounds are still there. But there's also comfort, and Loki finally having shelter from Thor again and, oh, my feelings on that were just ridiculous. Add in that the plot is fascinating, the other characters are pretty great (Tony gets a couple of pretty choice lines as well), Thanos is genuinely terrifying, and, basically, I want to shove this fic at everyone and make you all read it with me because I have been waiting for this fic. Even if I'm going to go claw at the walls for more of it now.

Trajectories by glayish, thor/loki + avengers + thanos, nsfw, action fic, 38k
They would become two sides of the same spinning coin. For neither one could exist without the other, but neither would they stand side by side. Touched but never touched, they would fight in desperation. Together but apart, they would long with love. Brothers, standing back to back, Thor pointed towards the light and Loki spun around to live on the dark side. It would have to be enough. The Chitauri and Thanos capture Thor to cause Loki the most unimaginable pain. Loki joins with the Avengers to get him back.
Chapters 01-04: I have been eying this fandom for awhile, trying to figure out where all the good Thanos fic is hiding and, ahhhhh, finally, yesssss, this is what I have been waiting for. Loki is taken back to Asgard, Thanos isn't done with him yet, but it's not in the way Loki things--they're not coming for him, they're coming for Thor. That is what will cause him the most pain, after all. I would have been happy if this was gen, but NOPE, I get Thor/Loki along with it! And not only is it full of Thor trying again and again to reach out to Loki, not only is it full of a gorgeous Loki characterization post-movie, but also Loki has to ask the Avengers for help. Oh, man, that was so good for me, you don't even know. Especially because he's working through so much shit, trying to keep Thor at arm's length because he's still a box of cats inside, something dark is still twisting him up and he doesn't believe anything better would ever accept him, but then there's the plot with Thanos building and the Avengers getting sucked back in and, oh, the pacing and plotting of this are delicious, because the author actually takes the time to build this story up properly. I just sunk into this fic as soon as I started reading it, it wouldn't let me go until I'd devoured everything there was of it so far (4 chapters at the time of this rec) and now I'm going to go claw at the walls and desperately wait for more of it. Because, oh, I will warn that ch4 ends on a rather brutal cliffhanger.
Chapter 05: Ahhhh, this fic continues to be really good for me because it's building up to the climax of the story and the author does action scenes! Good action scenes! I have not found enough of those in fandom yet, so finding one that's set between Thanos' minions vs the Avengers and Thor vs Loki, ahhhh, yes, good. And what's really good--and sort of frustrating because asdl;kfjalskj I need the next part now, okay!--is just... everything that's between Thor and Lok in their confrontation while Thor is under Thanos' control. There's so much there and Loki is still so twisted around and angry and bitter and damaged but this situation is intolerable and it's cutting at him terribly, which makes me want to go read all the fluffy fic the internet will provide me with, but also I am enjoying this jagged edged relationship so much in this fic. The writing continues to be lovely, the cliffhanger is brutal again, and I'm back to clawing the walls while I wait.
Chapters 06-08: It's a plotful fic about what happens post-Avengers, dealing with Thanos and the Chitauri and the threats they made against Loki. Chapter 5 ended on a hell of a cliffhanger, which these three chapters pick up from and, oh, the action just does not let up the entire time, both emotionally and physically. There are actual fight scenes! A truly epic battle against Thanos! The author does an amazing job of balancing all the team members, keeping a strong focus on Thor and Loki, but not forgetting any of the other team members and their roles in this battle. The writing is fantastic, it's the kind where I practically had to force myself to slow down because I was sliding into almost skipping parts of it because I desperately wanted to know what happened next, the tension and anxious feeling I had was totally delicious. And, of course, there was a very satisfying ending, it could only have ended the way it did, and the language of it was gorgeous and the feelings all tangled up inside me as Loki was faced with a possessed Thor, all the anger and hurt and desperation and fear and love and everything he went through. The ending may not have been perfect, but it was incredibly satisfying and, oh, this is a terrible rec for such a fantastic story, one that I've been pining for since I first walked out of the theater, and now I have it. I could not have asked for anything more from this fic, it gave me everything I wanted.

Stone Age AU, thor/loki, nsfw, dub-con/non-con in parts, brief descriptions of child death, stone age au, 55k
norsekink prompt: Thor's tribe destroys another tribe because they couldn't agree about their territories. Loki, a son of the leader of that tribe, survives, but he gets captured and enslaved.
I followed the link to this fic from umakoo's tumblr, because I was curious about a lengthy fic on norsekink again and I considered waiting until it was on AO3 (as the author is in the process of uploading her stories there), but I really couldn't wait, because this was such a great read. I have a difficult time believing that it's over 50k words, because it just went by so fast while I was reading, I couldn't put it down until I'd lost hours to it! I was initially skeptical, which I think a lot of people are by this summary, but it's actually a fairly heart-warming story! My one caveat is that, if you're like me and have at least a passing familiarity with Baldr's character, the making of him as a random villain in this fic was distracting during those scenes because it's against the basic tenets of his character, but was really jarring because everything else was such a delight and I enjoyed so very much of the author's choices in this fic!

This Thor is absolutely perfect, which was a blessing for me, as I've had a hard time finding good Thor characterization lately, but the fic absolutely understood why he shines in this sort of element and gets the aspects of his character down really well, which is all the more brilliant for the language barrier they face here! He's brave and strong and a good leader, he's kind to his tribe and only kills when necessary, but he's also headstrong and arrogant and takes what he wants, that never wavers. The relationship he has with Loki is very firmly non-con in the beginning, no matter how "nice" Thor is about it, but the fic doesn't flinch away from that. And this Thor has his moments of being smart, you can see why his family is utterly loyal to him, even why Loki eventually falls in love with him, the author does a fantastic job of showing both the bad sides and the charming sides of Thor's character through Loki's eyes.

But it's also in the world-building, how everything revolves around the constant, constant search for food, the difficulties they face because of the era they live in, the politics within the tribe are a never-ending difficult line that Loki has to walk. For all that this is a softer Loki in some ways, a lot of that is because we're inside his head, we see how he has to scrabble for every bit of security and navigate these waters that are so difficult. He's the one that's learning a new language, he's the one that's navigating a new political spectrum, he's the one that's balacing everything so carefully in a way that the others don't have to.

And, for all that this is a fic about the Thor/Loki relationship, it's also a fic about daily struggles in life, it's about Loki's getting to know the people in the tribe, it's about his interactions with Thor's parents and his romantic rivals and the slow acceptance he gains, the way he claws his way to something better in this life. The scenes where Loki and Odin interact are especially a highlight, as they eventually come to grudging respect for each other, despite that Odin was the one who killed Loki's father as a child. But, oh, fantastic Thor characterization, charming as hell worldbuilding, a way of writing that just sucks a person in, this fic was so absolutely good for me all the way around.

a history of things unsaid by circa1220bce, thor/loki, a handful of NSFW scenes, 30.5k
The Kings and Princes of Jötunheimr gain immortality and a ruthlessness unmatched by any other by having their hearts consigned to the Casket of Ancient Winters. Odin, thanks to the Well of Mímir, knew such a ceremony would leave the Casket vulnerable for the taking. Odin brought the forces of Asgard to Jötunheimr on the day Loki's heart was to be sealed away, disrupting the ceremony half way through. When Loki learns that he has only ever lived with half of a heart, he sets to finish what was begun. But events don't proceed quite as he plans...
I've been wary of this fic for awhile, because it involves mute!Loki and brings in elements of Norse mythology and these are two things that make me very skittish in fic. But I sat down with the fic and it just pulled me right in and was gorgeously written, especially the Loki characterization, with the world building and theorizing... the plot being that Loki's heart was meant to be consigned to the Casket, to be taken in exchange for the power to rule, only the ceremony was interrupted halfway through, so he's always lived with only half a heart. The author takes this idea and weaves it together with the movieverse canon--which is not precisely movieverse, to my mind, but works with the movieverse as a skeleton of the backbone of this set of characters, if that distinction makes sense outside of my head--in a really beautiful way. Loki's relationships with those around him are complicated, but most especially Thor, who loves Loki so much, loves him forever and always, but doesn't know how to trust that Loki loves him back. Which is not Thor's fault, even as readers and seeing inside Loki's head, it's complicated.

What I also love about this fic is the sheer scope of it, just how much happens during the course of it! It's not so simple as Loki finding a book on the Casket of Ancient Winters and mucking about with it, that's only where it starts. In some ways, it feels much longer than only 30k words but, yet, also feels like, wait, it was only 30k words?? as well, because it just flew by while I was reading! It's the kind of story that I'm having trouble writing a rec for because I don't want to spoil the journey this fic takes, but I still want to convey just how amazing and satisfying it was, to have certain things dealt with, the kind of epic things that most fics don't deal with because they're focused on a narrow window of time. But it's not just the scope that's satisfying--I was also terribly satisfied with the emotional aspect, especially his complicated relationship with Thor, and Loki's journey of self and, oh, this fic had some really gorgeous interaction with Sleipnir and just how Loki looks at his son, how he looks at the rest of Asgard looking at his son. Even the magic aspect was super satisfying! All the mythology was satisfying, but, honestly, yeah, I was still reading for the Thor/Loki and all the feelings it gave me, especially that one scene--no, wait, those TWO scenes that had my heart turning over in my chest in that exhausting but satisfying way. So, so good for me.

Their village lay on the edge of a dark forest, few even knew its name, but many knew that terrible things had been happening there on the night of the full moon for several generations now. Everyone was wary of strangers here in Asgard, and if any should come by, they would quickly leave once more. No one lingered here, except for the ones who had lived there their whole lives.
I guess it's a day for AU fics for me, because I felt like diving into another one as soon as I'd finished the previous--though, this time, I wanted some kissing by the end, goddammit. And this was a really excellent AU fic, where it's based on the Red Riding Hood movie from a few years back (though, you don't need to have seen the movie to read this fic, it stands very well on its own) and was smoothly written and beautifully paced and wonderfully detailed. I don't know how much of that is because it's patterned after the movie or how much the author built it up themselves (having never seen the movie), but from where I'm reading, it worked in a really satisfying, really good read sort of way.

I love AU fics, I'm slowly making my way through the entire fandom eventually (and, yesss, give me alllll of them, fandom!) and I love love love the use of Thor's cape here, the way I could just picture the vibrant red of it against the snow, the way I could just picture the dark, black fur of the wolves. Everything in my mind's eye had a gorgeous look to it, all the colors were sharp and beautiful, the scenery lovely. And the chemistry between Thor and Loki was delicious, the way they so clearly loved each other, but couldn't be together, the way everything was simple and complicated at the same time, ahhhh, so good. It's another fic that I just sank into, feeling completely satisfied by the time it was done, and, oh, the sex was super excellent because they had both been dying to get at each other, so it had an edge of intensity both times, and the build-up made it worth the while, even beyond how hot it was. Every time they touched, every time Thor wrapped his arms around Loki's waist or every time Loki pulled him closer and kissed Thor with a passion or every time Loki would slide a leg over Thor's to curl up next to him, just, ugh, yes, way to paint some beautiful imagery all the way through this fic.

Steam curls from the hot stones. It is stifling after the open air of the battlefield and yet Loki breathes in deeply, clearing his sinuses of the cloying stench of his enemies' blood.
I am no stranger to finding angry sex super hot, especially when it's deliberately incited by Loki, who knows exactly what he's getting into and what he's doing, even if, as the fic notes, he's at his most reckless when it comes to Thor and things get away from him. But that's part of what he wants, too, and the author did a gorgeous job of showing that Loki deliberately egged this on, that he enjoys the twisting of pleasure and pain together, and he especially enjoys that this brings Thor down with him. The way the author wound all of these things together and did with with super, super hot SHOWER SEX YES GOOD THERE SHOULD BE MORE SHOWER SEX IN FANDOM was extremely satisfying to find tonight.

After Loki is brought back to Asgard for justice, he's somewhat appalled to find that his family still cares for him and worries about his well-being. Even worse, they have a cunning plan to keep him safe from Thanos and sort out the havoc he's been wreaking everywhere. It works. And for one brief shining moment, Loki Is Happy. Naturally, it all goes downhill from there.
I have so many thoughts and feelings about this fic that it's hard to put them down into coherent words, despite that I want to write a more proper rec for this fic, given how long it is now. I've recommended the fic before but I'm still going to write this rec for the fic as a whole because it's so many things that I want from fic! Post-Avengers arranged marriage fic! Loki is loved and he's married to Thor who loves him and it's not smooth but it's fluffy and all about bringing their precious bby home! Thor and Loki learning to work together as Crown Prince and Prince Consort! A honeymoon to Midgard where there's a draugr to fight! Thor is a deliciously described berserkrgang! Actual fight scenes where Thor and Loki complement each other, balancing Thor being the main fighter with Loki's important and vital support! Thor not giving a fuck about explaining himself to others! Enjoying the fight and loving Loki and feeling no guilt about the deaths around him and being a bit of an exhibitionist and not giving a fuck about that either! And the sex, which is about Loki halfway learning to accept himselfa nd this attention from Thor, even if he backslides and still needs to work on himself, because he's at his best when he opens up for Thor, he's happiest when under his brother and when he's the entirety of Thor's focus and, yes, that is perfect Loki!

There's also some really satisfying sex and I don't even need more, because the physical resolution is so satisfying to me! The fic is a WIP and there's obviously more emotional resolution to come, but the seven chapters at the time of this rec are perfection to me. And it's a struggle not to just end the rec there, because look at that list of things that this fic has! I deliberately let the fic build up until it had a solid chunk of story to read, probably at least 20k of it, and I read it like it was nothing, because I couldn't put it down and it sailed along so quickly and it was just such incredible fun! The fic felt like it was tailored to what I wanted out of fandom, how good it was at everything it set out to do, the progression of Thor and Loki's relationship towards something better, after all the bumps in the road so far. Thor characterization that's genuinely good! Oh, man, when he's on the edge of the berserkergang, it's gorgeous, because it's so Thor, but ramped up even higher, so it was utterly delicious to me. The fight scenes were epic, those were truly battles and I would have loved it just for the action, but seeing Thor and Loki working together! Ahhh--!

Because this fic finds that perfect balance between something that's wholly about fixing everything and getting me to buy it without mentally going, "Well, it's fluff so, whatever." Nope, this is sharp and insightful and good. It's the kind of fic that could be just idfic and nothing more, where the value is in the itch being scratched that you have, rather than in the storytelling itself. But here I would have read the story even if it wasn't one that filled me with utter joy and is the biggest want of my heart. I want those dummies to work their shit out through arranged marriage, I want this to be in the canon of the movies (well, aside from TDW), but I want it to be about them getting married and battling shit together and then building up to that deliciously satisfying fuck because Thor has wanted to fuck Loki for ages and just. This fic has given it to me and it's beautifully written and I'm just really happy, okay.

Let slip the dogs of war by amberfox17, thor/loki, NSFW, dub con, rough sex, loki in chains, 5.3k
Loki is too far gone, and barely seems able to hear him. The air hums with the charge of his seidr, bottling up inside him, unable to escape so long as he is bound within the enchanted cuffs, and the beast in him is still battle-hungry and furious. He requires release, and since he is not safe to be set free, Thor has only one other kind to offer him.
This may be my favorite fic of Amber's yet, because it's just so ridiculously hot, jfc. There's a lot I love outside of the sex (as much as anything can be outside of the sex in a fic that's centered around the fucking), especially in how Loki is genuinely dangerous and the reader feels that, how that is absolutely done justice to, but yet Thor handles him and takes him back in hand, which is done with this perfect balance of dirtybadwrong and yet genuinely good-hearted, as only in the way Thor can be, because of his sheer strength and love. It's a fic that balances all the the things necessary to not make me feel like I needed a shower afterwards (well, aside from a cold shower, obv.), that I don't feel badly for anyone in this fic, but instead I feel awesome for them! Even when it's in a rather unhealthy relationship, it's not an unhealthy fic, because this is Thor, he isn't cruel and never would be, that's why this works. Yet that doesn't mean that it's gentle or sweet, because that's not really Thor, either. But instead, you can trust him, even as he's fucking Loki roughly and that combination gets to the heart of the characters and what keeps me coming back every time.

But also the sex, goddamn. Because, oh, man, nothing gets me like the hard edge of sex like this, where it's rough but good. When Thor pushes Loki's head down and hauls his ass up to fuck into him, it's scorchingly hot, all the more so because Loki wants this just as much, that surrender to this is the way to calming down. And Loki desperately riding Thor's dick, who leaves back and watches? When Loki is fucked out but still desperate fore more and Thor keeps fucking him even harder, as Loki rasps and demands more? Goddamn, this is one of my favorites in the fandom now, seriously. Every inch of this is perfect, both in my best ability to be objective and in my subjective "this was sooooo good for my id" way.

Thor is amazing at licking pussy and nobody is going to convince me otherwise. And poor Loki, he just can't win.
This is a sequel to Black is the Color, but as long as you kow the basic beats of that, you can read this.
Oh, this fic is fucking exquisite, to the point that I wanted to quote every line of it because it's all so perfect and insightful and spot on. The way Loki sees Thor is utterly gorgeous, this mix of bitterness and awe and love and hate and jealousy and a dozen other things, the way this Thor is so large in Loki's life, the sheer presence of him! I would have been here for that alone, because this is it, this is where I live with characterization. So many sharp edges and Thor such an unmoveable weight and, ugh, god, it's so good. Then there's Thor going down on Loki, the way he takes Loki apart and there's such tremendous history here and so much bad shit and love and dare all wrapped up together, with ridiculously hot sex that leaves Loki a mess both physically and emotionally, because Loki may be able to goad Thor, but he always bites off more than he can chew and Thor is always stronger emotionally than Loki thinks, because Loki himself is such a mess, and oh, god, just READ THIS.

Especially because it's ridiculously hot oral sex and of course Thor is good at licking pussy, he'd be amazing at it and Loki doesn't stand a chance against that and I would love it just for the sex, but no this is Thor, who just-- as;dfkljasl;kj I can't do it! I can't write the rec this fic deserves, because this captured Thor so perfectly and hit all the right notes, all the right moments of this good-natured fighter and warrior and brother, without washing him out, this is a Thor that's almost hard to look at because he's so intense and so solid, while this Loki is so sharp and brittle and caustic. But seriously though. Thor going down on a pussy, he would be a monster at it and he'd be merciless but also hit things just right and the author combined character insight with porn and I just-- nope. This is officially the worst rec I've written, like, in the past two years at least, because I just love this fic too much. JUST FUCKING READ IT.

a road uncharted by aintitnifty, thor/loki, adventure fic, 23.8k
Wherein Thor and Loki are lost, found, and mistaken for... well, gods.
Chapter 1: If you've been in the Thor fandom for more than five minutes, you've probably seen Thor and Loki compared to Miguel and Tulio from The Road to El Dorado, which is hilarious, but now! This author has taken that idea and turned it into a fic--not a straight up fusion, but something I think I'm going to enjoy even better! A story that's similar to that idea, where Thor and Loki get themselves lost, then found, the mistaken for gods. And I love the sense of adventure of the story already, the fight scene and magic use and things going wrong and then things going a little better and, ahhhh, it's so interesting (I love the author's use of Loki's magic as much as I love Thor's fighting prowess, but also the slight touches of world building) and the friendly banter between the brothers is delightful, the way they bicker and then instantly know how to fight together, and just. This fic is really good for me and I want the next chapter already.
Chapter 2: When I started reading this fic, I pretty much only expected a cute, maybe a little frothy Road to El Dorado fusion that I would just read for fun. But somewhere along the way, this fic turned quietly amazing in the little detail of how Thor and Loki interact with each other, their half-arguments that never really go anywhere but give an undercurrent to their relationship, the little details of the society they're in woven into the writing, some truly excellent banter between them that conveys the dynamic they have so well--they antagonize each other easily, but they love each other dearly, too. And then, oh, the ending was SO INTRIGUING and I REALLY WANT TO KNOW WHAT IT ALL MEANS and now I'm just kind writhing around and wanting the next chapter already!
Chapter 3: I dunno, maybe it's because I read this chapter during my shark week, but this chapter seriously gave me a whole lot of feels. Though, I kind of suspect that it was just really... well, this is currently one of my favorite fics, one of those that I go OMG UPDATE!! over whenever I see a new chapter, despite that I'm not really sure I could precisely explain why, other than to say it's really well-written. I suspect part of it is, with this chapter, it's from Thor's point of view, and it's a good Thor characterization (which, as I complain long and loudly to all, is surprisingly hard to find in this fandom) and it balances so much of everything that makes up the character, both good and bad, both anger and kindness, both immense strength and the tempering of it, especially as this chapter is centered around the rift that's grown between him and Loki, made all the worse when Thor realizes that Loki doesn't actually want to leave, that this place seems much better to him than their home. That realization is one of the reasons I read fic, to have Thor dealing with a Loki who isn't as at home in Asgard as he is, but without casting too much blame on either side. I feel for both of them, I love that I don't know if I want Loki to stay or not, I love that I'm pulled into the dilemma here. And I love how protective this Thor is of Loki, even when he knows that Loki doesn't really need it, I love that he automatically wants to teach the kids in the village how to be better fighters, I love that I love this Thor in this chapter. I picked up this fic for the "Whee! Road to El Dorado AU!" aspect, but wound up staying because it's giving me all the Thor&Loki Feels as well. And, um, I may have actually gotten a little achey during some of the scenes here.
Chapter 4: Ahhhh, I don't want this to be the penultimate chapter! I want it to go on much, much longer than that! Which is a bit unfair of me, this fic is already at nearly 19k words (at the time of this rec), which is a goodly amount, just... this fic never fails to give me a lot of really intense feelings when I read a new chapter and it's got all this neat world-building and excellent characterization and I just... really don't want it to end. There's something that's really gorgeous about this story and the writing here that I don't want to give up! Especially since the author has been doing such a great job of teasing Thor and Loki's futures in half-remembered visions they have, keeping me wondering if this is going to go full AU to fix things or if it's meant to be set in the canon timeline! But it's also how, with every chapter I pick up again, I find myself thinking, mmm, I don't think this fic can really give me as many intense feelings as it did last time, there's no way my chest will actually ache a little while reading. And then every time it happens again!

The previous chapter and this chapter are both ones that are pretty punch me in the feelings because they deal with one of the issues I most love to see dealt with--that Loki finds a place that's better suited to his talents, where he has people who encourage him and appreciate him and respect him for his skills, but Thor is not as comfortable here and refuses to give up his brother. The author does an absolutely gorgeous job of how Thor isn't trying to be cruel or selfish, but he does not want Loki to stay, especially when he doesn't trust this place. It's that fine line between Thor being right, but also being selfish, Loki being blinded to what's going on around them, but also right in that this place does suit him better. It's gorgeously done and I love it all the more for how angry they both get in this argument, as you can absolutely feel how much it comes from so, so much weighted history between them, both good and bad.

But it's also in the little touches that this fic enthralls me. Whether it's Thor punching a wall because he's angry at Loki's refusal to come back home or wrapping an arm around Loki to sleep with him because Thor wants to actually literally hold on thim just for a little while and Loki's reaction to that (which is perfect and, oh, it hit me right in the feelings) or the way Thor talks to the villagers or even the cliffhanger ending. All of it is delicious. ....jeez, that's a lot of feelings I apparently had to vent out over this fic.

Blue is the Tender Soul by Timid_Timbuktu, thor/loki, NSFW, temperature kink, thor 2 trailer spoilers, 10k
When Thor asks Loki to help him save Jane and Frigga after they are captured by Malekith, he knows that Loki will fight him every step of the way. Although Thor is ready for Loki’s lies, nothing can prepare him for the freezing touch of Loki’s jotun skin.
When I finished reading this fic, I immediately thought that this was everything I could have asked for: Tears, porn, and hope. It's everything I could have wanted from a fic like this! It's beautifully characterized for both of them, it doesn't pull punches on all that's between them that hurts, but it also gets at what's underneath the anger. Loki's starting to crack open, the way this Thor isn't stupid, the way it's always when Thor starts talking to him that Loki starts spinning out of his control, all of that is excellent for me.

There's a gorgeous mix of Thor knowing that he should be more patient with Loki warring with his anger and desire to reclaim his brother--which is a huge thing for me, that Thor knows he should be patient and gentler with Loki, but his temper and his possessiveness rear up anyway because Loki is his. It creates the perfect storm for the angry, possessive sex that's also about love and insight into these characters and is just scorchingly hot. Then there's the question of Jane between them and I am in love with how this fic handled it, how it doesn't diminish her importance to Thor, that she is genuinely important to him here, but Loki is his forever and, oh, it's so good. The ending is absolutely perfect as well, the metaphors used fit exquisitely well and the implications of it are exactly, exactly what I'm hoping for, all of it stunning. This fic made me tear up at one point, does a breath-taking job of addressing Loki's Jotunn form, has intensely hot, posessive, angry love sex, and a perfect ending. One of my must-reads for trailer-inspired fic.

Till Death Do Part Us by thegoodlannister [ mobile ver. ], thor/loki, 5.7k
History has taught Loki that there is only one way to ensure Thor’s attention is focused solely on him. Unfortunately, it happens to be very painful.
READ THIS FUCKING FIC. Okay. I am not sure I'm going to be able to write a rec for this fic properly because it gave me too many feelings, where both Thor and Loki are beautifully, exquisitely written. Loki is a mess, who is pulled in so many different directions, but that only makes me ache for him all the harder. The story pulls off the balance necessary for his character, where he's a mess but there's still good in him, he's still stubborn and determined, but brittle and yearning, all wrapped up in the package of contradictions that is Loki. It works for him!

But, oh, Thor. Who loves Loki so much, who has all this great diction and incredible way with words and bigger than life emotions, but that also sometimes meants it's hard to find the right words at the right moment. But he does. And, oh, this narrative was so Thor in tone and word choice and characterization! There is such depth here! Every scene they have shows that the author cares greatly for both characters, separately and together, that both are given their due here. But it also manages to balance angst and happiness! It's childhood feels and adult feels, because it's brilliant at being both serious and happy!

The entire last third of this fic literally had me curled up in my bed and trying not to wriggle around because of feelings, which it delivered stunningly. I may be biased because it was written for me and I share a lot of feelings with the author on the characters, except, no, I would have felt the same way about it regardless. Good Loki characterization is a lovely and wonderful thing, which this fic gave me very nicely. But it also gave me exquisite Thor characterization, doing justice to him as well, so I love it for-fucking-ever. Seriously, just go fucking read it, I don't care if I'm overhyping it, MY FEELINGS DEMANDED EVERY BIT OF GUSHING FROM THIS REC.

Build Walls for Miles Around by Lise, thor/loki, truth spell, 5k
Amora and Loki's brief flirtations tend to end poorly. This time it's ended poorly for Loki. And he's really, really not happy about what she's making him do.
I did not realize that I was in for truth spell fic when I started this one, because if I had, I'm pretty sure you would have heard the sonic boom I left in my wake as I dove towards this one even faster than I already did. And now you have to leave me here to wallow in feelings, because Lise's Loki is always such a mess and puts up such a fight about everything and she does justice to how the truth has to be torn from him and how painful that is. It keeps that gleeful sense I have, where Loki is backed into a corner and has to tell the truth, because I fucking love that trope, give it to me always!!!, but it also just... is terribly ouchy because this is Lise's Loki, who is a goddamned mess. And, oh, the build up and ending of this are utterly exquisite, especially when you see Thor putting together the pieces of what Loki is/isn't saying, despite how hard Loki tries to wind around it and avoid it, and just. This was gorgeous and satisfying, for all that it's ouchy in the middle, it's absolutely a wonderful and emotionally good read.

Waiting for the Moon to Rise by cavaleira, thor/loki, NSFW, jotunn!loki, intersex!loki, king!thor, prostitution/brothel au, 77.8k
As the newly crowned king of Asgard, Thor's life is filled with stress as he as he navigates political intrigue and struggles to figure out what kind of king he wants to be. Desperately in need of a night of relaxation, he finds himself at a brothel he used to frequent in his youth. It's there that Thor spends an evening in the arms of beautiful courtesan named Loki, and his whole world changes in ways he never could have imagined.
I'm going to write such a terrible rec for this fic, because I practically inhaled all four available chapters at the time of this rec and couldn't put it down. The first thing I thought about this fic (and the first thing that made me fall in love with it) is that it's practically an ode to Loki's cunt and that is exactly the fic I needed to read. But it's also themed on a greater level on what the heart of their relationship is--Loki caring for Thor in a way that's all about him trying to remain distant and unaffected, manipulativing him and goading him for fun and profit, but biting off more than he can chew, until eventually Thor has completely undone him, half by simply being Thor and half because Thor is insightful and wants to see more of him. There are moments along the way where already Loki is precarious about being cracked open, but he's managed to hit it thus far, whether on a moan as Thor fucks him harder or by playing it off as a game. But this Thor is observant and thoughtful, so while he may not have a mind like Loki's, he still sees Loki. And each time they meet again, that connection gets stronger.

This is layered over by lovely details and bits of world-building and political intrigue, where the fic is careful to not have Loki overstep his bounds (until he does, because that's what needed to happen, because that's yet another way the fic shows the growing connection between them and it was both organic and necessary), and all of this works together marvelously well. And then the sex is ridiculously hot, whether Loki rides Thor or Thor licks his way into Loki or puts one leg over Thor's shoulder and fucks him hard. This is a god in bed, who enjoys taking Loki apart with his cock or his tongue, that perfect balance of how Thor likes giving Loki pleasure, in a way that's well-intentioned, but also that Thor simply enjoys doing this to loki, enjoys rolling him over to slide his cock right back in, enjoys going after him aggressively and yet respectfully, that the combination of those things is Thor. And, as mentioned, this is practically a love letter to Loki's cunt, whether with Thor's tongue or his fingers or his cock, and I love that that's practically a central theme of the fic, because I love when Loki's vulva is given such a central role in sex, that it's not just a one-time thing, but that it's beautiful and ridiculously good to read about every single time. I want more and more of exactly this kind of sex scene, where a vulva is the celebrated center of the sex scenes. *__*

This fic is everything I want from courtesan!Loki fic and I am greedy for more in this same vein, that they step closer and closer to something real, that every bit of worship to Loki's cunt strengthens the feelings and the narrative structure and themes of this fic. And the characterizations are exquisite, that this fic balances them both well, that Loki is a sharp blade, but Thor is this incredible presence that Loki cannot help but be drawn to and bowled over by, that their relationship keeps the same spirit as the canon, with every time Loki tries to stay at arm's length, tries to use emotion as a weapon to weild, only to be disarmed by Thor, who does not turn it back on him, yet still manages to lay him open anyway. And Thor cares and loves deeply, this brilliant person before him, this one who helps him to see more politically savvy points in his court, who balances his world view. Ahhhh, this was so good for me!
Update rec for chapter 5: I hardly know where to start with this update, because it was so long and satisfying (over 15k for this chapter alone!). One of the central themes to the overall fic is continued here in what is practically an ode to Loki's cunt and how wonderful it is, which is one of my very favorite things about the fic, even if I have many favorite things about it. It's also... there's squirting in this chapter and it's fantastic, it's dirty and cheerful and enthusiastic and adoring of Loki's cunt and that's one of the things that has done me so much good in this fandom, that female parts are incredibly beloved and actually paid attention to and that there's such sustained enthusiasm for them! All the more fantastic because Thor loves doing this to Loki, loves writing this from him, and it's ridiculously hot, omg. Every time attention is paid to Loki's enture cunt, it's utterly fantastic and this chapter is no exception. *__*

But there's also more details from tehir childhoods, little touches that are utterly charming and show how Loki opens up to Thor and how the emotions between them progress and become all the clearer in this chapter. There's also lovely interaction with Sif and you see Thor becoming more thoughtful especially in these scenes, and it's lovely! The use of books and flowers are also lovely, with just enough detail and meaning put into them to add even more richness to the story being told! But, man, the sex. When Thor loves fucking into Loki, when he's so good at fucking like a beast bcause it's Loki and Thor can't hold back with him, how that's good just for reading the sex, but also in showing that that's how Thor expresses affection for Loki, by the way he wants to fuck into Loki at all times, when Loki's orgasms are so intense, when you can feel how much he enjoys Thor's fucking, etc. It's all just ridiculously good for me.

But you know what else really turns me on about this fic? That it's a courtesan AU fic that is a slow build and takes time to lay the pieces down that are necessary, where it isn't just that they instantly fall in love and the king of Asgard trusts a Jotunn courtesan with everything. There are doubts expressed by people who love Thor and genuinely want the best for him and for Asgard, who are willing to try believing, and are narrative on the side of good, too. There's Thor recognizing how this may look to others, but Thor lives by his instincts and his heart, which is such a Thor thing to do, even when Loki has shown moments of obviously not being honest or entirely trustworthy, when we know that there's more complications and machinations going on here. This is a story that keeps all those elements in, while still also keeping the sheer glee and joy of reading a "Thor falls in love with Jotunn courtesan Loki" fic, which, lbr, if this had been angsty and cruel and painful, it wouldn't have been anywhere near as much fun to read. There are serious moments that make you feel for the characters, but it also embraces the trope it's writing about, so it becomes that blend of idfic that's genuinely good and well structured. Fucking bless, okay.
Update rec for chapter 6-7: I've recommended this fic before, but I wanted to write a rec again now that chapters six and seven have been posted! These last two chapters (well, one is an epilogue) don't have any sex in them, but I found that I didn't mind, not after the loving dedication to Loki's cunt of this fic in previous chapters (not that I won't always take more of Loki's female bits, because I love him so very much) and how this wraps up the story so very well. I mean, I want the lovingly detailed attention paid to Loki's cunt evry time, I didn't want anything else while reading it! But I don't mind the focus on the relationship and the cautious next step they took here, that it was instead about the feelings and things that are coming to a head, as is necessary to close the fic out and to have them progress forward.

There are some lovely lines of description here--my favorite, I think, is "Loki was a very talented sorcerer and he knew power when he felt it. And what Thor possessed could conquer realms and obliterate mountains into dust. Thor was joyful and wild, eyes blazing and hair whipping in the wind. He looked dangerous, and Loki felt a flush a desire shoot through him because he had always courted danger." because it does a beautiful job of showing this larger than life presence Thor has, while showing Loki's sharp edges and how he gets swept up in the storm of Thor and how he thrills at it, the danger he dances around, when it comes to Thor. It's a nicely done bit of character insight, as Loki realizes how much he loves Thor and cannot deny that, even as he tries to hold himself back. They're in different circumstances in this universe from the canon versions, but their spirits remain the same in moments just like that!

These chapters were a satisfying conclusion to a fic I enjoyed immensely, it was warm and comfortable to read, there was something a little sweet about the time they spent together here, under all the other stuff going on with them. It's an epic fic, a love story with a grand background, a prickly and sharp Loki, a Thor who knows what he wants and coaxes Loki out not unlike one would a stray cat, by being direct and honest and grabbing what he wants for them, but not in a crushing grip, instead a consistent and genuine approach. And sly, seductive Loki who still has so far to go, even at the end, but manages to take that step foward! So good for me, ahhhh. Especially lines like how Thor would fight for him but wouldn't chain him down. Ahhh, yessss, that's what I want. ♥ It's hard to believe this fic was almost 80k, it certainly sailed along more quickly than that--yet, at the same time, was entirely satisfying and perfectly finished up. Bless.

As if he were the Sun by ohfreckle, thor/loki + other thor characters, NSFW, human au, russian historical au, some crossdressing, 5.5k wip
Thor is a Russian nobleman and Loki is his spoiled rotten consort who’s drenched in jewels and furs and is constantly whispering conspiracies and scandal into Thor’s ear.
Russian nobleman!Thor and spoiled consort!Loki, oh, this was an utterly amazing prompt and I love this first chapter for it already. It's fantastic how much you can feel the research that went into the background of this story, so that there are all these little casual details that lead to a richness of the story (the clothes, the drinks, the problems they'd face, the solutions Loki offers up) but without feeling at all like the fic grinds to a halt to give them. They are just simply part of the story that's being told, the everyday part of their lives in this historical period! But, as much as I love it for being an amazing prompt that was given serious consideration, as much as I love it for being about LOKI IN FURS and RUSSIAN NOBLEMAN THOR, it's also beautifully characterized. This Thor is so indulging and knows maybe he shouldn't be, but doesn't care because he cares about Loki, he likes spoiling him! And this Loki is so cutting and sharp, there's something almost mean about him, except not, because there's something genuine between them and the balance is spot on with their characterizations. Loki being such a shit and Thor half finding him amusing and half loving him for it, that's the sweet spot with these two, ahhh.

This is also a Loki who is that kind of twisty seductive that I love, who knows how to manipulate to get what he wants, whether it's Thor or the people that are sort of 'enemies' (as much as they have them in this universe). Whether that means walking around in little more than women's underwear or tempting Thor with how ready to fuck he is, it's perfection because Loki should always be a little manipulative and Thor should always know that about him and half love him for it and half just see right through him but still be affected by it. Which is, again, that sweet spot for these two and where I live, because it makes everything so good, but without giving up their sharp edges. And, oh, Loki's love of clothes and how pampered he is (and the good advice he gives Thor) and how extravagent his tastes are, this are so very excellent, too.

And then there's the sex. The night-ruining sex for me, where Loki had been waiting for Thor to return, already worked open and waiting for Thor's cock and I about exploded on the spot over that. Then he climbed onto Thor's lap, this mix of genuine appreciate for the new present he'd just gotten and vicious little shit, while Thor fucked up into him because he loved spoiling this little shit? Yeah, that was really good for me. Loki riding Thor's dick while those big hands are on him and supporting him and holding him, so it's just a bit rough but also so good and full of love, that does it for me. Thor wanting to see him, wanting to see his cock in Loki's ass, wanting to see the sated, wanton look on him, the possessiveness he has towards Loki. Just. Leave me here with my feelings.

demon summoner au (part 1) [ mobile ver. ] + demon summoner au (part 2) [ mobile ver. ] + demon summoner au (part 3) by rayemars [ mobile ver. ], thor/loki, nsfw, demon au, dub-con, 23.5k wip
"How laughable when we both know you have the very same tainted blood running through your veins."
chapters 1-2: You just sort of have to roll with this Thor characterization, where he's not his canon self, that he's far meaner and completely ungenerous here, which goes against the original source for the character and was a bit distracting, but it's such an interesting dynamic he has with Loki here that I couldn't put the fic down anyway! I love AUs that really take their time with the world-building and the details, so the little bits of information we get on how demons work here and the way Loki uses magic to unlock a series of doors that have something locked away behind them, the things Thor observes as he watches (and yet doesn't really care about) are all an absolute highlight of the fic!

The fic also has a really good, satisfying fight scene in the first chapter, the way the characters fought ties nicely back to canon, where Thor is all power and strength to Loki's quick and clever reflexes and spells. The writing here is really solidly good, it was super easy to get sucked in and just read all 10k words of the first two chapters before I'd even realized it, the author's pacing and length of each scene just right to give me a sense of satisfaction over the building story yet never lingering too long. I'm really interested in seeing where this fic goes and I do find that I greatly enjoy this Loki, who is sharp and clever and smug, so easy to picture him in this AU already!
chapter 3: Jesus christ. I mean, okay, yes, yes, plot and even hints of berserker demon!Thor were all good for me, but whatever. That cannot compare to the utterly exquisite and so fucking satisfying sex in this chapter, so much so that I fear doing a terrible rec for something that I enjoyed so thoroughly. From lengthy fingering (jfc, when Thor uses Loki's hand to open him up, because Thor's claws would hurt Loki too much, I just about combusted on the spot) to excellent use of Thor's tail to the intense fucking to the way it played on their dynamic beautifully just... ugh. Feelings! Feelings and porn! Because this is angry sex, but it's in the way they both enjoy, Thor who is direct and is about pure strength, and Loki who is about enjoying the way he affects people, the way he manipulates them, so twisty and complicated. This is demon!Thor and sorcerer!Loki, unf.

As if that wasn't enough, there was also Thor's thoughts of what he would do next time that just about burned my face off for how hot and perfect it was. How he would keep Loki open on his fingers until he's broken apart and no longer always hiding and slithering away. This, this exact dynamic, this is what keeps me in this fandom, when it's so deliciously good. Mixing the really good porn together with the characterization is my favorite thing, the way Thor starts to break Loki's mask off him, so that he actually reaches behind those walls, even in an AU where they have no reason to care or have the same history. Even here you can feel the way they balance each other, Thor's open aggression against Loki's sneaky and clever ways, the brief moments of true understanding as Thor pieces this maddening puzzle together, oh, yes, give me that always. Especially when it comes with Thor fucking Loki with his own hand, then practically bending him in half to fuck him so hard that he can't hardly speak anymore, which Loki clearly enjoys it, enjoys the power of the demon he's bound to him and having it turned on him, and all this manages to achieve some sort of equilibirium. That being taken seriously enough to get this from Thor seems to calm him more than anything. Perfect and god bless.

Seriously, though, even without the characterization, this was just ridiculously good porn, with Thor using his tail to keep Loki's legs spread open and then supporting him while fucking into him and, holy shit, that is my new favorite fingering scene ever. This chapter is worth it just for the porn alone!

Enthralled by Kay (sincere), thor/loki, NSFW, dominance/consent issues, rough sex, polyamorous negotionation, 5k
After the Avengers, Thor thanked them for helping him retrieve his property. He didn't mean the Tesseract. He meant his charming, clever, sarcastic thrall, who is currently furious and defiant and in need of (and looking forward to) a reminder of his place. At wonderful, exhausting length. Then Thor will be able to bring him back to his friends, introduce them to the real Loki, and... thank them properly.
This fic has a fair amount of warnings on it and they're ones that should definitely be paid attention to! There are consent issues all over this fic and dominance and, as the author tags it, polyamorous negotiations with Loki and the rest of the Avengers. I think it's best to read the original prompt and the notes carefully and to be sure you know what you're getting into when you read this one. That all said, oh. Um. This was one of the hottest things I've read in a long time, because the author knew exactly how to play the dominance kink and hit all the right notes with it. The idea of Loki's insanity being a part of his biology because he was away from Thor too long was really intriguing, the idea of dominating sex literally calming him the hell down worked because this is a kink story, and then it was all tied together with gorgeous, gorgeous characterization.

When I pick up a story like this to read, half of the time I expect to be reading it for a guilty pleasure that I'm never going to admit to the world that I read in the first place. I don't often expect to get that breathless feeling of amazing dialogue (oh, this author's Loki is so elegant in the poisonous words that he lashes out with) or an incredibly wonderful Thor who loves Loki so very much but also is bringing him back into hand, who weathers Loki's cutting hisses without hardly blinking because Loki is his and will be reminded of that, it's a perfect mix for a story like this. I would have read it and loved it just for those things, but putting it together with the super hot sex, that's just rough enough without being mean? With the sex that's about love and caring on both sides, but also about pushing Loki down and fucking him well enough that the anger runs out of him because someone else has taken the leash from him, as he wants underneath all the lashing out he does? Good god, that was one of the hottest things I've read in any fandom, not just this one. It's not going to be for everyone, but if you like this kink, it's going to be really, really good.

Postbellum by Shiny_n_new, thor/loki (pre-slash?) + odin & frigga + other thor characters, 22k
While Loki is imprisoned for his attempt at taking over Earth, he discovers Thor is sneaking off to Jotunheim.
I'd seen this fic around while it was originally being posted and I was curious, but it wasn't a priority until someone on ffa mentioned there was Odin & Loki interaction, which piqued my interest. And, oh, this is one that would have been a shame to miss! I am glad that I read it after it was finished, because the wait to know how things would turn out would have been a little brutal, but now I'm also kind of sad because I read this fic in two sittings (only stopping because my hoarding urges were kicking in with this fic--when I really, really love a fic, I don't want to finish it because then I'll have no more of it!!) and now I have no more of it. It's only ~20k long but it packs in so much I want to talk about!

The characterization in this fic is absolutely stunning, because Loki is solid and that's not that remarkable (but no less cherished for it!) but Thor. Thor was fucking exquisite in this fic, this is one of those stories that I want to shove at everyone when they want to read a good Thor characterization, which is all the more fantastic because the author does a gorgeous job of keeping this from Loki's pov, but structuring the story so we're still seeing what Thor is up to. Loki's secret scrying on Thor allows the best of both worlds--to see Thor being fantastically written and brilliantly spot on, but also getting to see Loki's feelings on all of it. And, oh, this is subtext done right. This is everything we see of Loki in the movies, that love and jealousy and admiration and fury mixed together because Thor is so... Thor. He's impossible not to love, he's so huge in body and presence, he is the focus of Loki's thoughts genuinely!

The fic balances those things but also understands both of these characters. It does a gorgeous job of showing Thor working in Jotunheim, the way he interacts with people, how he has matured so much, but is still absolutely and completely Thor. And Loki is wily and cunning and twisting, that sharp blade that cuts and yet is so fragile in other ways. When Loki loses his shit because of what he sees, it's perfection, it's both completely in character and built up to perfectly, the narrative does its job to make you understand what's going on underneath the surface, but without having to spell it out for you.

That's where the subtext is done perfectly--this could work as genfic, if you wanted to see it that way, there's no resolution to any physical or romantic attraction or even direct mentioning of it, but boy do you feel it here, so I didn't mind at all! (It helps that I also knew this going in.) The depths of Thor's affection, the way they are the most important people to each other, the extreme intensity of the feelings between them when things become stressed, the twistiness of Loki's feelings and how it cuts through everything, all of it is breathtaking in this fic. This is an absolute must read in this fandom, if you like the interaction between these two or just simply want to read some good Thor characterization. It's still about twisting these two together, this is a Thor who does not want to give up on Loki, so he doesn't, this is a fic about the two of them together, but it does not sacrifice Thor's life outside of Loki for it. And that makes it fucking perfect. Also, there's some really excellent scenes with Odin and Frigga! Ahhh, so good. (MILD SPOILER FOR THE ENDING: This fic deliberately chooses to not resolve things, it works surprisingly well in between The Avengers and The Dark World, all things considered, but it starts happy and... it's not tragic, I think this universe will ultimately end well, but it's not going to be in this specific fic.)

Thor can tell, by the barely discernible narrowing of Loki's eyes, that his brother is surprised to see him.
I had such a flailing moment when I saw this fic was posted, because this author is still one of my favorites in the fandom and this fic did not let me down. It's almost simple, in a way, where Thor seeks Loki out and knows the both of them so very well, so the bittersweet tone isn't crushingly oppressive, but instead it works to further everything that's going on with them here. It's a 'second time' fic, which is something I don't see a lot, but now I want all the more because it was really interesting here, and it's used to great effect! Their conversation is perfect, it's Thor and Loki are both perfect, ti's perfect because it's not perfect but getting better and the sex is ridiculously hot. That they can't even make it to the bed, that there's such obvious love here even amongst all the bitterness and intensity of things between them, ugh, so good for me. And so hot.

The Fault is Not in Our Stars by MonstrousRegiment, thor/loki + other asgardians, au, 30k wip
After a long and wretched campaign, Asgard has conquered Jotunheim. To ensure King Laufey's cooperation and later friendship between the kingdoms, Asgard takes home the apparent heir to the throne, Loki Laufeyson. Loki is, unfortunately, anything but complacent.
I have two caveats before I start in on this rec. First, there are a good amount of typos in this fic, which surprises me because typos (beyond the odd stray one here and there) usually means the writing quality is not that great, but this author is actually really excellent. They're not terrible, but once or twice I was mildly jarred out of the story. Second, the worst thing about this fic is that, after about 5k words, I desperately, desperately wanted Thor to just kiss Loki already. 30K WORDS LATER, THAT STILL HADN'T HAPPENED. The entire time I was reading this story, I had the most awful case of unresolved tension that I was just desperate for the author to fix already. This is because the author writes beautifully, but it is a thing I definitely experienced and would warn you to have something with some resolution handy for when you're finished or even need a break mid-way through. Of course, I was coming up on my shark week while reading this, so that may have affected me as well. Still. Okay, caveats out of the way.

So, I decided, well, I'll start in on this fic and then promptly couldn't read anything else until I finished it and ahhhhhh I hate waiting through wips and this fic is why. The author does a gorgeous job with the fic, everything about it is wonderful, from the opening being the kind that grabbed my attention and refused to let it go, to the absolutely torturously good build-up of tension and attraction between the characters, to the completely amazing dynamic Thor has with his family. Who are amazeballs, by the way. Frigga and Odin here are both total trolls, they delight in winding up their son--who delights in doing the same right back--and it gave me a whole lot of family feels while reading this. There's one scene in particular, where Thor finds out something that he can't let his father know (as his father may have to act on it and Thor absolutely doesn't want that), so what does Thor do? He tells his father that there's something he would ask Odin to trust him to handle it himself, to not press their mother (who knows) and, if things get bad, he'll come to his parents about it. And Odin trusts him! Just. Let me roll around in my feelings for this perfect family. They're so absolutely good.

But it's also the world building! This Jotunheim is a more human/mortal-esque world (as is Asgard), but the bits of culture we get as Asgard invades them, the details we learn about as Loki adjusts to life in Asgard, all of them are deliciously good. However, it's truly Loki himself that shines the most, with his poisonous tongue and sharp words and cold looks one minute and burning anger the next. He's beautifully characterized, almost vulnerable one moment and then fiercely mad the next, the author doing a beautiful job of showing how very complicated a character he is. The best part about this is that it only makes Thor more attracted to him! To see him really come alive when he's angry, to see that fire in his eyes or the passion that occasionally surfaces, especially when he find the library or tries a new kind of food for the first time, when he refuses to just lie down even when he's hopelessly physically outmatched, that's when Thor finds him the most attractive.

So often, when you get good Loki characterization, good Thor characterization is sacrificed, but I find myself dearly in love with this Thor. He has an amazing relationship with his family, he has fantastic friendships with his friends (all of whom are absolutely wonderful and supportive and Sif has some of the best insights into Loki, even if she's wary of him, she doesn't blame him for what she's wary of and, oh, here, just have my heart) and the way he interacts with Loki, he's aware that he has to go slower, that he has to be more careful, but he's a man of action, the kind of person who does things, always keeps trying. That is the Thor I love.

The author does a fantastic job with everything necessary here, the writing style is smooth and so good to read, you just sink right into it and the world building and pacing and everything, I would absolutely have kept going if there had been more of it. So far, my only complaint really is that it's immensely frustrating to not have any kissing yet, to fear that they're not even close to it, and so desperately wanting it, because the author is so good at making me feel the attraction there. All of that and there's actually a plot going on and political shenanigans happening and just. asldfkjl;kjas this fandom is going to be the fannish death of me someday.

A Prelude by umakoo, thor/loki, NSFW, jotunn!loki, 10k
Thor is young and reckless, eager to slay one of the ferocious frost giants and have the skalds sing songs of his mighty deed. He sneaks into Jötunheimr, but the giant he meets is nothing like the hulking, bloodthirsty creatures from the age-old stories they tell in Asgard.
I got to test read this fic and I am still ridiculously pleased about that, because it's such a great story and it resonated with me so strongly. This is an AU, with Jotunn!Loki and a younger, more arrogant Thor, but it keeps entirely to the spirit of both characters while balancing that against them having grown up in different circumstances. There's a comfort level with the mythology here that makes the melding of it with the Marvel characters feel natural and seemless, all these little details make their way into the background world that's built here, so you can feel how much time and care the author has given this world, without feeling like you're being info dumped on. But it's also in the way these characters are so recognizable to me! Loki's cunning and sharp edges, Thor's arrogance and good nature, the banter between them showing off both of these things beautifully, like how the fic does a brilliant job of knowing when an insult would roll right off of Thor, when it would make him laugh, but also when another would make him genuinely angry. Or when Loki would swipe viciously over one particular comment and then just smile like he's got a secret over another, we only know so much about him as we see the fic through Thor's eyes, but you can feel how much more there is to the character and how this is a Loki who'd grown up in this Jotunheim.

In addition to all the attention put into the characters, there's also some truly fantastic sex. Intersex!Loki is perfect, the fic strikes a balance between the newness of each other and how well they work together even in these circumstances and, ahhhh, it's so good for me when Thor takes his time to explore Loki, who clearly enjoys the attention, the presence of both cock and vulva, the going down on Loki to taste him, all parts of him, the satisfaction of when Thor finally fucks into him, the safterwards when Thor's seed spills back out, jfc, that was really good. And, hell, there's still yet more to this fic, including stirrings of future trouble for Loki, more world-building details that are lightly touched on, a genuinely unsettling presence that approaches them later, and more. The author clearly crafted a whole world here and it shows well in just this one fic, even if there's totally also room for a sequel. ♥

Hammer, Horn, and Heart by umakoo, thor/loki + loki/mjolnir, jotunn!loki, intersex!loki, in heat!loki, berserker!thor, mythology, NSFW, 10k
Thor often chose to visit him in the summer, for his golden skin was not made to withstand the cruel winters of Loki’s homeland. They would hunt together and feast together, tell stories and sing songs, spar and play and roam the land. Sometimes they bickered and came to blows, but no argument ever kept them from fucking for days on end, taking pleasure from each other’s bodies until their youthful lust was sated.
This is a sequel to A Prelude, which should probably be read first, but, ahhh, this fic is such a fantastic follow-up to that one, it keeps doing all the right things and hitting all the right buttons for me, so much that I'm left fearing a terribly incoherent rec once again. The fic continues to have that level of comfort and easy familiarity with the mythology, so that this truly feels like a fusion of both mythology and Marvel characters, it blends them seemlessly and feels very natural to read. The fic continues to have a strong sense of the world these characters inhabit, so many little details of culture and background world building worked into the story (instead of just being infodumped on the reader), but also a strong sense of who both of these characters are. I love the way this author writes both of them, Loki with his fierce independence even as he's lonely and rather dearly wants to stay with/go with Thor, and Thor with his temper and cheerful good nature and how he clearly cares deeply about Loki but doesn't push too hard.

And, oh, when berserker!Thor happens, not only was it already an excellent action scene (I LOVE ACTION SCENES, YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH, especially when they're written as super badass Thor against a terrible and fearsome foe like Angrboda, making it feel like a truly epic battle adventure of gods), but berserker!Thor is pretty goddamned terrifying. That's one of the things that this fic does so well, it balances Loki's sharp cunning and wily ways against the brewing storm that is Thor, I truly felt the god-like presence of Thor, especially in that fight. It balances that these two characters clearly care so much about each other, Loki trying not to be vulnerable but can't help how much he cares, Thor not wanting to put Loki in a cage or force him into anything but wanting to take Loki with him, wanting children with Loki, wanting more from him.

So, by the time the fic ends, I love that it's not about being super saccharine, but it's a happy ending, it's the perfect note the story needed to end on, right down to the words said to each other and the way they resolve their arguments. And I love that they do argue here, that it's a major part of the story that they fight just as fiercely as they fuck, because I love me some fluff for always, but my favorite is when they snarl and yell at each other just as much as they wrap themselves up in each other and fuck for days. Which, by the way, they definitely do as well. And, oh, the sex in this fic is so good for me, because it's intersex!Loki and there's Loki riding Thor's hand and then there's sex with Mjolnir that works so incredibly well because it's a combination of things, of respect for Mjolnir, there's clearly great affection from the author and the characters, so this is something glorious, not just a handy sex tool, but also because of the seidr and faint lightning Thor runs through, jfc, that was really good, and EVEN THEN THEY'RE NOT DONE, when Loki is on his hands as knees as Thor fucks into him and just. It's lengthy sex that hits so, so many of my kinks and is super hot and wonderfully characterized and truly feels like this is how gods fuck.

The entire story feels like a story about gods, really. The entire time I was reading, it felt like this is one of those adventures that's part of their epic mythologies, that further working with the feel of blending in the mythology here. So, to recap. Beautiful characterization (and in case I hadn't mentioned it, do you know how much I love that Thor is forever touching Loki in various ways, not always about sex, just that Thor is a very physical person, not even anything being made of it here, he just is), beautiful world building/blending of mythology into the characters, fantastic battle scene, an emotionally satisfying ending, and super satisfying sex. That's it, I'm done now, go on without me, I can't go any further.

Moonlight shone in through the high windows and the cracks in the walls, creating a pale halo around Thor’s wooden frame. Loki laid his hand on the skillfully carved Mjöllnir that stood between the idol’s feet, tracing the patterns and runes with his fingers. He could not ignore the fact that the Thunderer held the place of honor in the mortals’ place of worship.
This is the third part in a series that should be read in order.
I really am just completely in love with this series, it's so good, it's a gorgeous mix of a more Norse mythology-based story with Viking culture, without losing that these are still well connected to the MCU versions. This fic in particular delighted me for it, because you can feel Loki's envy and darker moments are still there, even though they've been tempered by different circumstances growing up, there's still the issue of dealing with how he (doesn't) fit in with the rest of Asgard, there's his envy of Thor, his posseessiveness of Thor, the envy that roils up in him, these things will always be part of Loki. And, yet, this is a brighter, happier universe where they don't have the same looming tragedy hanging over them, even if not everything is perfect and sunshiney. It's just a really good mix of the two.

Yet, as much as I love this Loki (and, boy, do I!) I think I love the story even more for Thor, who feels right here, who has a good-natured personality, who enjoys being with other people, who enjoys helping, who feels responsibility towards others that he should protect, but there's also a temper to him, and a weight to the character. You can feel how much thought the author put into the characters, as much as was put into the world around them, which makes it all the better! There's thought for each of the characters, how they would be in this world, and how they would interact with each other, so when Thor knows how to find Loki (or the implications that they still have epic fights, just that they always return to each other again) or they spend time away from Asgard by themselves, content to hunt and fuck and travel together, it's just so good.

And then there's the sex. These are gods who fuck, who clearly enjoy each others' bodies, how it's almost filthy what they do to each other, except it's also sweet and so clearly fun for everyone involved! Which makes everything extra hot, unf. There's so much care in the fucking, so much adoration between them, even as they're still very clearly Thor and Loki, that it just warms me and reminds me that happier fics need not lose any of their sharpness! And then there's an excellent final couple of scenes, where Loki makes some important decisions, and the author crafts those scenes beautifully as well for how they're built up and meaningful to these characters. Just a really great read all the way around.

Part four in my Jotun AU series in which Thor and Loki have their first child.
This is the fourth in a series, which helps to read in order, but if you absolutely wanted to, you could read this one on its own, I think.
There is so much I want to say about this fic, but I fear it's going to be one of those recs that only captures a fraction of what I adored about it, because every scene has so much going on with it, every scene has a point to it and further explores an aspect of this univverse that's interesting and full of feelings, and it leaves the fic with such a rich, lush feeling to it, even beyond the Norse mythology elements that have been married to the spirits of the MCU characters. I remark each time I do a rec for a fic in this series, on how well blended the Norse mythology elements are with the characters from the MCU, how it's clearly both mixed together, in a really organic and incredible way. I would recommend this fic just for that! But it's also in the way the author has clearly spent a lot of time expanding this world and having a strong view of it, which isn't info dumped onto the reader, but instead worked in with little touches, so that everything feels very fully realized! And I love writing like that!

That it comes with dometic fluff that still carries emotional weight and includes Jotunn!Loki and pregnant!Loki and that kind of cheerful, enthusiastic porn that I like is just even more of a bonus. I love how much culture there is in the writing here, both for their time in Asgard and for the bits of his own history that Loki brings with him, when it's something as simple as the paint he marks himself with or the food that's served or the rooms they inhabit. I love that another way to keep the spirit of the characters is that Loki has an absolutely beautiful relationship with Frigga here, which isn't the same as it is in the MCU, it can't be, but I still felt like this is how they would be if they had these contexts to them! And this Odin is absolutely SPOT ON, with the balancing of being as old as he is with as wise as he is with as much of a king as he is and with as much of a father as he is. I found myself really struck by his character especially on the second time through, when I had a stronger sense of what he was thinking, and that's exactly how Odin should be! Everything was perfect with him, everything was perfect with Frigga and how gentle and motherly she is, without sacrificing that steel core she has.

With those scenes, it added to the domestic fluff feeling of the story, which I absolutely loved, but it was more than that. This Thor and Loki obviously deeply love each other and they have a rock solid relationship, but it's not perfect. This Loki is still prickly and this Thor still sticks his foot in his mouth sometimes, but this Loki is also able to be more open about his vulnerability and this Thor is able to be calmer about supporting Loki through the pregnancy, so it's fluffy, but not too sickly sweet, not in any scene. And, oh, this is everything I love about pregnant!Loki, it hits all the tropes while still keeping them sharp and fresh, so you understand why they became tropes in the first place. And I love that there's focus on the actual birth and the kid after the birth and that sweetness of when you have a baby to hold in your arms, that little miracle of life, for both Thor and Loki as new parents.

Not everything is perfect, Loki is still a Jotunn in Asgard, which comes up a few times in the fic, but it too feels natural and organic to the storyline, one that is almost sort of necessary. Plus, it gives Thor a chance to fuck Loki in a place where they can sort of be overheard because let them hear and OH MAN GIVE ME THAT ALWAYS. Because I love how much these two really enjoy fucking, how Thor enjoys seeing Loki writhe in pleasure and how absolutely greedy for that Loki is, it's charming and heart-warming and all the hotter for it. Combine that with the deliciousness of anxiety over expecting a baby and how that brings up a lot of Loki's issues and it's a bumpy road at times, but there's genuine kindness and just. Ahhhh, it's so good, especially if you're looking for something to make you feel all warm and happy while reading it.

Through the Fire by umakoo, thor/loki + other asgardians, NSFW, jotunn!loki, pregnant!loki, intersex!loki, domestic fluff, mild violence, 18.1k
The fifth and final part in my series of Jotun AU fics in which Thor and Loki are new parents and come face to face with their past.
This is the fifth of a series of fics that should be read in order!
Speaking of fics that I'm going to have a terrible time writing a rec for, where I'll either wind up writing a novel or just keyboard smashing for three paragraphs. This series has been wonderfully good for me, because it's a fantastic blending of mythology and the MCU characters, where they're not strictly one or the other, but you can feel the spirit of both them so very well, you can feel how familiar the author is with this world she's set up for them. But it's also more than that, because even a detailed headcanon of a world doesn't always translate to an interesting fic, neither does just simply dumping information or details about Norse culture and the mythologies in, so it's thankful that the fic has a gorgeous way of weaving them into the story. I often thought while reading this fic that I would like to use it for an example to writers who want to work details into their writing, how to not overwhelm or pause the flow of the story, but who have all these little touches that they want to use for enrichening the world. Sometimes it's as simple as quickly describing the trees or the food laid out before the characters or an object in their hand or the type of clothes they're wearing or how they travel from one place to the next. Detail that you don't notice unless you're paying attention, but that find that balance between describing the world richly and yet letting you picture it in your mind's eye.

But even more than just on a technical level, this fic is entirely satisfying on an emotional level for the domestic fluff aspect that doesn't let go of these characters still being themselves. The fic has a strong sense of both Thor and Loki, they both have such strong personalities, and I love that they fight more than once in front of the reader, true fights that feel entirely organic to the relationship, the kind that you can relate to with any married couple. Yet, even when it's a terrifying clash or when there are such angry words between them, there's never that hint of fear that they're going to break up for it, not even because the author doesn't write that kind of fic, but simply because it's just the way married people argue sometimes! That's not something that I get to read often enough in fic and so I loved having it here.

Then, on top of all that, this is a fic that's largely about Thor and Loki as parents, which actually does a great job of showing the kids' personalities beginning to show and not having them overtake the story too much. It's just the right amount of kids in kidfic, that it's really more about the parents (as they're the characters we're emotionally attached to) than it is about the children, finding that line between them being massively important to the characters and other things going on. So, that means the domestic fluff is half about showing them as parents (I am never going to be over this, because there is so precious little fic of them actually parenting kids, not just having babies!!) and also in how they simply live their lives. This is a world where it's not entirely accepted that Thor married a Jotunn, that his children are half-Jotunn, but it's not an evil or cruel world, just one that has a lot of lingering bigotry that you can believe will eventually be worked through. One day. Because the scope of this fic is nicely long, which makes you feel how very much these are gods who live thousands of years (or longer), as well as fits with the mythology feel of the story.

And I love the foreshadowing in this fic, which I will not talk too much about for fear of spoilers, some of which is build-up that you see coming (and are excited to get to!) and some of which comes out of nowhere, but it all feels wonderfully paced and properly built towards! The sense of the other realms (which aren't necessarily important to the greater plot, but are important in the sense of history and their daily lives) and the magic that the characters use and the way the entire fic is charismatic and left me just happy to have read it... I'm grateful for these stories and sad that this is likely the last of the major entries of it, even as this was entirely emotionally satisfying as a resolution, goddamn. It's got absolutely everything I could want from it, including some wonderfully enthusiastic and heartwarming sex that's still absolutely filthy and ridiculously hot. I really could not ask for more. ♥

"Loki," Odin says, heavy with disappointment and regret for all he has to raise his voice, "Odinson. I cast you out."
Up to this point, I have been wary of this particular kind of AU story, where Loki is the one that's cast out, rather than Thor. If I had thought about it too much ahead of time, I'm not sure I would have wanted to read a fic where Loki is the one banished to Midgard without his powers and is taken in by Jane and her friends. But the writing of this piece is so gorgeous and so perfect, so believable with just a fine twist of events, that I was pulled in and could not put it down until I was finished with it. It's gorgeous for everything it says about the characters, especially Loki and his reasons for the early events of the film, why he manipulates Thor and why his intentions are not bad, that he truly loves his brother and Midgard and he is... not entirely wrong. That was one of the really gorgeous parts about this fic--the insight into Loki realizing that Thor wasn't ready to be king, that he knew the cost of what he was doing and it was still a choice he made. But then! Loki falls to Midgard and he has to fill himself up with something and the interaction with Jane and Erik Selvig is so perfect that it aches a little, to the point that I almost sort of wanted to ship Loki/Jane, I think I would have been okay with that, if it had been the way this author had gone. But instead it's about Loki finding people who actually value his talents, but even more value him as a person, it's about Loki finding a channel for everything that's inside of him, it's about Thor crashing into Loki's life no matter where he goes, it's about all that anger and rage in Loki, and it's about finding something good with all of the weight of fate that presses on their lives. This is a gorgeous, incredibly satisfying fic that achieves everything I wanted from it, including the resolution to Thor and Loki's relationship, as well as some really excellent sexytimes. But I think maybe it's the way Thor finally understands Loki, the author's excellent build-up to that, it's not easy, but, in his own way, he works as hard on it as Loki works in his own life, that might be my favorite of all. This fic is on my "must read fics" for this fandom, never mind for this ship.

After the movie Loki is retrieved, but Odin declares he will either submit to his conditions or be exiled as mortal. The conditions are that Loki must marry Thor and bear his children. Thor agrees, not wanting to lose his brother, as does Loki, eventually, deep down wanting nothing more than the love and acceptance of his family (though he doesn’t believe he’ll ever get it). Thor is not told of Loki’s heritage or why he can bear children and assumes it to be something to do with his sorcery.
I find myself unsure of how to write a rec for this fic, other than to flail my hands in random patterns and make keyboard mashings. It was one of those fics where I curled up in bed while I read it and I didn't want to get up afterwards, because I'd sunk into the story and the lovely writing and all the intense feelings it was stirring up in me. And yet it's difficult to explain why, because the summary sounds like it should be straight out of a romance novel--Loki is forced into a relationship with Thor and doesn't understand that he can't become pregnant until he goes through his first heat cycle.--and a lot of the story elements here are pretty much straight out of such, but I didn't find myself enjoying this on an ironic level.

I enjoyed this on a genuine level, where Loki's constant simmering anger that he bites back, Thor's well-meaning enthusiasm if unintentionally cruel lack of noticing the finer details, the way Loki hates so much around him and yet you can feel his connection and love for them as well, the balance between love and anger he has for Thor here, it's so in that sweet spot for me, much like Loki in the canon itself. It's in the way Thor wants Loki, desires him for more than just bearing a child, the way he takes Loki again and again, how there is an element of selfishness there, but he's such a force of good and caring and holding back when he says he will, it's both super hot and wrenches my heart terribly. And it's in the tropes of it--an arranged relationship that has real feelings, the way Thor freely touches Loki whenever he wants, the intensity and passion of their coupling, the frequency of it, all of it works for warrior gods. But it's also about Loki being caged and there is a very genuine sense of that here, how this is a punishment for him in a way that others never seem to understand, and the author does a beautiful portrayal of how trapped he feels, and that is a lot of what stirred up my reactions to this piece, because I just have so many goddamned feels when it comes to Loki. And even the ending is... exactly what needed to happen, I think. A gorgeous, gorgeous fic all the way around.

This fandom keeps spoiling me! With things that should be terrible! But instead are actually good! The summary--When young Thor acquires a priceless book of magic, Loki wants it badly enough to offer sex in exchange for it... and Thor wants him badly enough to accept.--intrigued me greatly and I've liked the author's previous works, so I settled in to read. It's one of those that caught me and wouldn't let me go until I'd finished the whole thing, because it took a scenario that could have been ridiculous and instead made me enjoy it genuinely. The way Thor wanted to take Loki again and again, Loki's almost blase attitude towards it, except there was obviously something genuine underneath that, the way each time wasn't just about more sexytimes (though, that was lovely as well, because I will never have enough porn in this fandom, and fic like this only feeds my desire for more) but about the two of them learning each other or different insights into the character or just different, interesting situations. The author never felt routine in their multiple couplings, their conversations during as satisfying as the sex itself, and yet nothing was brief, everything felt perfectly paced. The ending does take a bit of a turn into angsty territory but it's fluffy angst and things resolve themselves well, so my reaction is, fuck you all if you don't understand my pure, pure love for this fic and everything about it and all the kinks of mine that it hit.     The feeling of vulnerability had never been one that Loki savored. But there were times…oh, there were times, on his knees as in defeat (kneel!) and -
The author isn't kidding about this Loki being fucked up, but, oh, it's in such a delicious way and it plays with how much he hates himself and I definitely can't lie that Loki selfcest asphyxiation porn wasn't something I was going to read. It's a combination of using the porn to illustrate some insights into Loki's character, how he punishes himself and how this turns him on, as well as writing scorchingly hot porn with really beautiful descriptions. Everything about this fic is meant to be sharp and cutting, every line of dialogue is perfectly delivered and it's so easy to see Loki like this for me, this is how I view him a lot of the time, it fits so well with my feelings on the character. The threats of violence, the hurt he does to himself, the way he wants to be wrecked here, oh, that's so beautifully written. And so, so hot.

Which all before Thor is even mentioned, because once he is? Again, it's that combination of scorchingly hot porn (and implications of how Thor would fuck him) and the insight into Loki's character and his relationship with/feelings towards Thor. Plus, I have to be impressed with a fic that does a brilliant job of never naming the other character (but it's not a surprise if you read the tags) and yet never feeling awkward for it, the fic is beautiful on a technical level as well as an emotional one. Just. Yes, give me more of this forever.

Monstrous Terrain by rayemars, thor/loki + other thor characters, NSFW, jotunn!thor + jotunn!loki, au, 30k

With Thor as king, Loki will stand closest to the throne.
I'll warn ahead of time that this fic is not finished and it's been half a year since it was posted but, oh, it's so good and so sharp that I can't help but love it anyway. It's a story that runs very similar to the Thor movie, except that Loki and Thor are betrothed to each other from a young age, that Loki is pushed into studying magic and books, that Loki is meant to take up Frigga's role when he's older, all of which only make his bitterness and anger all the stronger. The fic is gorgeously done for filling in the story, including little bb!Loki with Frigga and how she tries to console him or his moments with Odin, where he tries to make his father realize that Thor's not ready, tries to get his father to show him any kind of affection, the odd changes his body goes through, the way Thor is just so stupidly in love (and lust) with Loki, and the moments with Thor that are both so good and so engraging. And that's where this fic really sings, in Loki's tangled up feelings for Thor, whom he loves dearly one moment, and then would gladly see him ripped apart the next, for the restrictions placed on Loki's life.

There's a line in this fic, after a painful conversation between Odin and Loki: The doors slam loudly behind him, and again, Loki smiles wryly at the similarities between his Father and Brother. It's no wonder he loves both men to the point of madness. that I felt summed up Loki's relationships with both of them beautifully. There's something so incredibly... tight and wrenching about this fic, there's something that's so good and so sweet about this fic, and they're intertwined in that way that breaks my heart, but also keeps me fascinated. It's this complicated, tangled, thorny, desperate mess that is the character of Loki and it's one of the most gorgeous portrayals of the character I have read in fandom. It's probably doomed to end in tragedy, certainly the opening scenes seem to indicate that, so it might be better for me that it's not finished. But I can't help wanting more of it anyway, if only to know wtf is up with Loki's illnesses that come and go.

A Jotunheim born-and-raised Loki becomes Thor's prize after a war with the frost giants. Thor is thoroughly smitten, which unfortunately means he's not too keen to take the slow route. No, the path Thor take has a lot more hair pulling and it's Loki doing the pulling.
I was intrigued by this fic as soon as I saw it was posted tonight, curious about a Jotun born-and-raised!Loki that becomes Thor's prize after a war with the Frost Giants. Fic like that always has the potential to go wrong, but, oh, this fic was so good. The author warns ahead of time what you're getting into here--so those who aren't into dub con should stay away--but also points out that this is a Thor that never went to Midgard to learn to grow up, which fits so well with the character we saw early in the Thor movie. Headstrong and stubborn and just taking what he wanted, but not without his charms and a caring heart and a good nature. But, oh, also this Loki. This sharp, cutting Loki who is brilliant and is beginning to be won over by this brute, but will never admit it, which beautifully keeps the spirit of their relationship. This is one of those fics that hits me where I live, the possessiveness and slightly rough sex that is super hot sexytimes and barbed banter and biting and hair pulling and intense fucking that takes its time and little details about the background woven into the writing and, ugh, just SO GOOD. This Loki is SO GOOD, so proud and difficult and ready to fight, which is actually the point, that's part of what turns Thor on and, oh, I love this Thor dearly, too, and, oh, what I wouldn't do for more in this universe. p.s. did I mention the super excellent sexytimes? Because they were pretty excellent. But, really, the whole thing is SO SATISFYING.

Thor is holding one of Loki's legs bent back against his chest, and he is thrusting lazily into him. Thor huffs out a snort of air, pulling back just enough to look at him, not slowing his pace. "I see you decided to rejoin me," he says.
Every so often, you get one of those fics where an author decides they love you dearly and give you everything you wanted, wrapped up in a sharply written piece. Basically, this is an excuse for pure porn, where Thor's control over his desire for Loki has finally snapped and now he's going to have him and have him and have him, to the point where Loki blacks out for awhile, waking up to find Thor still fucking him and, oh, it's so good. It keeps this gorgeous balance of Thor's possessiveness of Loki, his desire to just completely unwind Loki, to fuck him into total pliancy, but also keeping Loki's wickedly sharp tongue and sense of self. ["I want you to feel this now, I want you to feel this for days, and think of me every single moment. I want you to know just who it is you belong to." "I know who I belong to," Loki says, wrapping his arms around Thor's neck to keep his balance. "I belong to me." ] There's a rough edge to their sex, just the right amount of it, just the right amount of Thor taking everything he wants with Loki, but it's also wrapped up in a strong mutual attraction, it's wrapped up in Loki having goaded Thor into this, it's wrapped up in Loki not losing himself but still dearly loving Thor, and wrapped up in really possessive, super hot sex. I expected maybe something at least halfway satisfying when I saw this prompt had been filled and maybe it's not going to be for everyone but, good lord, this author hit every one of my kinks dead on and NOW IT IS MY FAVORITE DELICIOUS CANDY.

Loki is about to be killed when he's saved - by Thor. But it's a Thor who has traveled from a different universe - one where he and Loki lived and ruled together until Loki was killed by the Chitauri. Once Mirror!Thor sees how Loki has been treated, he decides to take Loki back with him.
Oh, man, I love mirror universe crossovers, I wish there were more of them in this fandom because they are the most delicious candy to me! And I love it when I can read a fic where I spend almost literally the entire thing with tears in my eyes because it punched me so hard in the feelings! It does sort of trend a bit close to that sort of apologia fic where it goes on about how terrible the heroes are to the villain, but it never crossed that line for me, because the mirror Thor was clearly speaking from grief and our universe Thor clearly still loved Loki so very dearly and our Loki still did a lot of really terrible shit, even if mirror Thor was angry about how poorly he was treated. If you really hate that sort of thing, this is not for you. But if you're willing to read that one fic that's really beautifully done with it, oh, man, is this ever. I spent the entire fic just absolutely TORN about what I wanted for Loki--to stay in the universe I knew so well or to have him go to that other universe where he was so cherished--spent the entire time aching because of mirror Thor's loss of the one he loved so completely. It's beautifully written and I can't even tell you how how much it affected me. I'm serious about having tears in my eyes while reading, because it hit my buttons so hard.

Loki may be the one who is able to weave words together, but everyone likes listening to Thor.
Oh, I love love love fics where Loki is weak to something of Thor's, where Thor knows it and uses it well against him, because Thor's not mean about it, he just enjoys undoing his brother's calm (because who wouldn't?), especially when Loki is so turned on by Thor's voice like this. The author does a gorgeous job of hitting the voice kink perfectly, of making the reader practically feel the deep rumble of it and describing it so well, but also the dynamic between Thor and Loki, the dirty talk that Thor whispers in Loki's ear, about just how he's going to fuck him later that night, oh, man, this author hit every right note along the way. Gorgeous.

The smoothness of silk stockings gave way to textured lace and then to warm skin,
Oh, sweet jesus, this was fantastic. It's absolutely filthy and so hot, for the way it balances Loki's teasing and sultry glances, knowing how he looks in the maid's uniform, with how Thor's touch overwhelms him and drives him wild. That is my favorite Loki, who goads and then gets more than he can handle, especially if it's in a happy, positive way and he thoroughly enjoys the results! Also, the descriptions of the maid's outfit are great, painting a lovely picture in my mind, right down to the way Thor touches him through the silk panties or the lace brushes against their skin. And, oh, I love Thor enjoying this, enjoying his little brother dressing up for him, enjoys touching Loki through the silk and feeling him harden inside the panties, enjoys spreakding Loki's legs wide to see him, enjoying pushing his knees back to get the perfect angle as Thor fucks into him. This may be a pwp, but it's scorchingly hot and it's still these characters. B l e s s.

And there are thousands of miles between them and home, except not really: They're right next to each other, after all.

Speaking of fic that I had to put down my reader after I finished them! This fic is exactly what I needed and I should have gone to sleep earlier than I did, but I couldn't hardly put this down once I'd started it. I mean, it's a road trip fic, I love those! I would have loved it for all the little stops or details or goofy things they did along the way, but it's more than that, it's also in the characterization which was just exquisite for this world and keeping to the spirit of the characters. It's bittersweet in all the right places, Loki has all these sharp and angry and jagged edges, Thor doesn't quite know how to handle him but forges on anyway, and somehow they make it work. It's gorgeously balanced between keeping all the weighted history between them and actually being a happy fic!

So, I'd have loved it for those things, but also, holy hell, there were some scorchingly hot scenes along the way, too. And further adding to the weighted-but-not-tragic feeling was the touching on knowing they were brothers, but still being attracted to each other, still wanting to fuck each other, especially when Loki is that sort of blend of... mischief and anger and desperate need. There's banter in all the right places, too, because that's how brothers are. All included in a fic that has one of the most ridiculously hot fingerfucking scenes I've read in ages, like, oh my god, this thing is never coming off my reader because every inch of this was perfect and I only wish I could have written a better rec for what's one of my new favorite fics in the fandom.

Steve hesitantly reaches out and takes the object in Tony’s arms to survey it. 'It' being a pillow upon which was an almost frighteningly accurate illustration of Loki, their on-and-off again nemesis. "I don't--how did you even get this? Who would MAKE this?" Clearly Steve doesn't find the attention-to-detail on Loki's costume as hilarious as Tony does, which whatever. Like he said. Killjoy. A.K.A The one time Tony buys Thor the world's worst souvenir and it somehow worked out in the end anyway.
I kind of stared at the summary for this fic and was like, "....hrm." until Meg said, well, actually, it was pretty lol. So, okay, I trust her opinion on things that are funny and I settled in to read. Oh. I think I just about cried my way through this entire fic because it's beautiful and the author does a brilliant job of taking a cracky situation (Tony brings back the WORST GIFT EVER from Japan) and yet does an amazing job with the characters' voices and the entire situation. I mean, a Loki love pillow (which Thor takes to carrying around because he misses his brother and just-- tears, so many tears on my face, okay) is one of those things that could go so horribly wrong in fic, but it doesn't! By the time Loki himself shows up, MY FACE HURT from Tony being like, yes, this is the most hilarious thing ever and then later, no, no, why did my joy turn out like this, while everyone else around him is a bunch of total killjoys. Even when I reread this fic, even when I know it's coming, even when I know what Thor's reaction is going to be, I still laugh until my eyes mist over from trying to stiffle my laughter because I am not explaining why I'm in a fit of lols, no. Basically, this fic is my happy place right now.

In a quick effort to make Loki docile, the Avengers release a chemical that only drugs Asgardians. It gets Thor too, but hey, they had no choice. But Loki and Thor aren't so much docile as incredibly affectionate (except when Loki turns his lazy, heated gaze on one of the Avengers, at which point Thor turns into a possessive caveman and fucks Loki right in front of them.
Oh, jesus, this fic. It's amazing. It's got a beautiful Tony voice and an amazing concept. YOU GUYS, THIS IS WHERE I LIVE, OKAY. I laughed the entire way through this because, oh, Tony's voice is seriously pure perfection with every wry comment or thought, but also Thor and Loki being all over each other without giving a fuck about the rest of the world--well, until Loki is Loki and Thor snaps and makes a point, which is super super hot but also H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S. Like, I cannot even talk about how much I love this fic's humor without keyboard mashing or just repeating "LOLOLOLOLOL" over and over! I want to quote a line or two from the fic but I honestly CANNOT CHOOSE, they are ALL TOO PERFECT. I could just... just... explode from laughter and absolute joy at how much I loved this fic.

When Gods Make War (Men Take Cover) by peachchild [ Thor ]
→ pairings/characters: Thor/Loki, Greek mythology, Avengers, some character death, very mildly nsfw 13k
→ summary: If he is perfectly honest with himself, and Loki is only ever really truly honest with himself, he couldn’t have predicted how perfectly it would all go. He only meant to start a little quarrel, not an entire war.
→ rec: First off, I'm going to give a warning that I will be telling some spoilers about this fic, given the warning on it. I started reading (and skimmed the ending, though, that doesn't always provide perfect context) before I read the character death warning, which may have given me pause before reading if I had. So, I'm going to say that this fic does deal with characters dying, but I will also say that there is a happy ending for Thor/Loki, so if you're wary because of that, you could probably still read this fic.

That said, holy wow, I enjoyed this fic far more than I'm going to be able to convey, I suspect. It's a gorgeous crossover between the Marvel characters and Greek mythology, one that blends the two pantheons far more seamlessly than I would have thought, without being a ridiculously long work. But the author knows just how much to put in, where to put the focus, and how work in background details that the story retains its epic feeling without having to be a million words long. And I love stories that balance character moments with actual plot, that the fighting that erupts because of the mischief being spread around left me feeling almost breathless for how intense everything was, the author somehow conveying everything I needed to know about the wide scale effect of the war with tremendous grace.

But plot is often times only half the battle of a great fic, the other half is getting to me with character moments. And, oh, Thor and Loki's relationship is beautifully done here, with their private moments having this incredible intimacy between them, where things are light and happy and so warm without sacrificing the weight of the characters. Both characters have such tremendous presence, they have such history between them, and, oh, that things aren't perfect, that I could feel how strong Thor's love and his anger both were, I could feel the scale of their immortal lives here, that Loki's viciousness isn't sacrificed even when he loves truly and he's calmed down so much. That balance of keeping their core characters while still giving me happy moments is blissful.

I love the take on the Greek mythology and how it exists at the same time as the Norse mythology, how they affect the modern world around them, and I even loved the scenes of the Avengers fighting back against this war that spreads across their home, that was lovely as well. But the heart of the story is on Thor and Loki here, with both of them having exquisite characterization--Thor being such a warrior, having such tremendous impact with everything he does or doesn't do, that I felt that, that I felt this was a future king of Asgard and that he had his own personality and motivations! Even when that meant refusing to fight sometimes, but in such a Thor way, that's not always given to me by fandom, but, oh, I loved it here. Even just the little touches, the way he would slide a hand down the length of Loki's spine or the way Loki curled against his side or the ending scene where Loki follows Thor in such a Loki way. I would have loved it for any one aspect of the fic, but giving me all of them? Ahhh, bless.

Even evil geniuses with world domination tendencies, an IQ far too high for this realm and too much free time on their hands have to find something to do on a Friday night.
This is the other "Ugh, SO SATISFYING" fic I read today and just... UGH, SO SATISFYING. Loki and Thor have a brief moment of getting drunk off their asses and Loki drops his prickly exterior for just a moment, long enough that they tumble into bed together, which Thor is clearly delighted about, but then Loki is back to his angry, twisted up self, especially when he finds himself sick in a way that he can't figure out and, boy, is he seriously fucking pissed about that. Oh, this Loki characterization is so good for me, the way he's just miserable and snarly and swiping at everything that comes near him, even when he finally has to break down and ask Thor for help, because he can't figure out what's wrong with him, and everything is making him barf or mood swing like hell or just generally be miserable. IT'S EVERYTHING THAT IS SO GOOD FOR ME.

Especially when Thor just loves Loki so much and is constantly a wellspring of being available for him, not minding Loki's all too sharp tongue, reading between the lines with Loki, still seeing the good in his brother, even when Loki is full of nothing but vitriol and sharp edges. The author does a gorgeous job of keeping those edges to Loki, so as much as I read this for Loki getting knocked up (I WANT SO MANY FICS of Loki dealing with the effects of being knocked up, the mood swings and morning sickness and, oh, everything), I wound up enjoying it for the fantastic Loki characterization! The entire narration, the way Loki just hisses and spits and thinks poisonous, moody thoughts about everything, about how his fucking life is the worst, that I could have just rolled around in it like it was catnip. And it works because Loki is sick and doesn't know what with and sometimes he thinks death is preferable to whatever this is, but he doesn't actually give up, instead he's just miserable and makes sure everyone else is, too. Except fucking Thor can never be miserable, not even when Loki's life is shattering apart again at being told he's fucking pregnant, and UGH THEY ARE THE BEST. THOR IS THE BEST. LOKI IS THE BEST. THIS FIC IS THE BEST. It was so good and I ate it up like it was the tastiest candy because it was.

But as a semi-short AU fic, where Prince Loki and his two brothers go to Jotunheim to hunt frost boars and run into Jotunn!Thor? OH MY GOD SO GOOD. It balances the Loki we know and the Thor we know with changing them slightly because of the different circumstances they've grown up in--I recognize both characters, but also can see their differences in this universe. And, oh, the writing is so sharp and clever and fun, the instant attraction between Thor and Loki is perfection, but also... each of their characterizations is so good I find myself barely restrained from keyboard mashing over it, especially as Thor lures Prince Loki away from his brothers, the snow storm cutting them off, because Thor has plans and he grins as he announces them and this Loki isn't quite so mean, but he is quick and cutting and there's a certain something boiling in him, especially when he thinks about how badly he wants Thor to fuck him hard, in a way no one else would dare in Asgard. And, boy, are his thoughts on that super fucking hot, ugh. Basically, this is the most perfect AU Jotunn!Thor and Aesir!Loki I could ask for. (Thor/Loki, a bit nsfw.)

AVENGERS/THOR: An Ancient Pitch by Sarkasticfics SUMMARY: Loki isn't lurking anywhere obvious. Loki isn't lurking at all. Thor's breath catches in his throat and he wonders if he wouldn't have preferred it if his brother had come flying at him with a knife – except not. Except Loki always knows what Thor wants, and lately, Loki has been endeavouring to give it to him, if it's at all within his power – and within Loki's oddly sketchy but generally reliable frame of morality. REC: I was almost sorry to have read this fic today because it was the third one I read, pretty much in a row, where the author hit a kink that I was super, super interested in (Loki in lingerie, in this instance, based off the gorgeous fanart linked at the beginning of the fic) and there's no way that subsequent days will be able to match up to the fantastic reading day I had today! Especially because it's the third one in a row where it wound up not being just about the kink or the super hot sex, but about characterization and the messy, complicated relationships Loki has with people. How much he loves Thor here, how much trouble he has expressing it, so he finds other ways to do so, ways that attempt blur the lines between truth and lies so that he doesn't have to be responsible, and Thor just cuts through all that by being genuine and understanding Loki and guiding him towards something better? Oh, I honestly don't know if I enjoyed the porn or the characterization more. Because this Loki is still so sharp and caustic, even as he's dressed in little more than lingerie and play-acting at being only there for Thor's pleasure, because Thor always brings out the things that are real in him and, oh, Thor loves him dearly and knows him so well and won't just leave things as they are, no, Thor finds a way to make them better because that's what Thor does and all of that on top of Loki in a tiny, ruffly outfit and an eagerness for Thor to fuck him already. And Thor just taking Loki apart, smiling at him as he tells him the things he's considering doing to him, smiles at him as he knows how much prep Loki put into this and how willing Loki is, smiles as he deliberately jars Loki out of character by telling him all the filthy things Thor will do to him, all while Thor loves him so completely. All of that was THE BEST for me, given that I only expected to find kinky lingerie sex from this fic. (Thor/Loki, NSFW.)

Avengers/Thor: Gilded Cages by miss_aphelion - A fic in which Loki is the cherished youngest son of Laufey, beloved but chafing under the watchful eye of his father, so he sneaks away to Asgard during mating season, and I see the fic is labeled with Loki getting knocked up? Oh, I read the shit out of this one, let me tell you. And I really loved it a lot, because the different circumstances--where Loki is overprotected and shown a ton of affection and not lied to--do make a lot of difference in his character, but he's still Loki. He's still far too clever and doesn't want to just be a protected thing hidden away from the worlds, he does as he wants and smiles and lies his way out of trouble. Yes, this is a much nicer dynamic than in the movies, this Loki and Thor don't clash, there's no resentment between them, but I still recognized them and was pulled right into the story this author was telling. The chemistry between them was delightful and of course it was my favorite part, but I actually found that I was reading this for the Laufey - Loki characterization as well! Laufey was still dangerous and threatening, but it was wonderful to see him as an overprotective parent that clearly loved his son, even as he smothered him a bit too much, it made for a satisfying change from the canon of the movies.

But also Loki being a sneaky little shit was so good for me, the writing was beautiful and I loved how elegant Loki's words were, how smoothly he lied or twisted words around, it made the trope of knocked up!Loki all the more delicious. And I love that this fic's entire point was about being happy, about bringing these characters together in a way that warmed my heart, that made me want to roll around in my bed afterwards and just glow with happiness! Fuck angst, there needs to be more happy fics! Happy fics where Loki's kid is already a little shit even before it's born and is messing with his magic and yet he loves it already and Laufey is like I HOPE IT'S JUST AS MUCH OF A LITTLE SHIT AS YOU ARE TO ME and you know it will be and everything works out? Yeah, I need more of these. Especially when everything is just super fucking satisfying. (Thor/Loki.)

Avengers/Thor: In Plain Sight by dreamlittleyo - Have I recommended this fic before? I can't remember if I have or not... eh, either way, it's worth a re-rec if I have. :Db This is one of those fics that... on paper, it's like a whole list of tropes of this fandom, that Thor misses his brother, mourns for him, cannot let himself believe that he's really gone, that Loki watches from the shadows until he can't help revealing himself, that he expects Thor to hate him, that Thor loves him and wants him, etc., but when I read it, it's one of the most gripping things in the fandom. The author writes an amazing Thor, who loves Loki dearly, but there's also anger there because he is angry at all that Loki's done, the blend of the two is so very good. The Loki characterization is lovely as well, he's vicious and cutting, but (as we always see when these two interact) he's still undone by Thor, he still comes apart when faced with Thor's genuine emotion. All of this on top of really super hot, gorgeous sex that's just rough enough to be perfect for the characters at this point (and did I mention super hot?) and, oh, character insight plus a boatload of feelings? This author spoils me for the rest of the fandom. (Thor/Loki, NSFW, an edge of dub-con.)

Avengers/Thor: Between the Bars by trinityofone - My only complaint about this fic is that it's only 6k and I would read 100k of this and still come back for more. Beyond that, I'm a little at a loss for how to write this rec, other than to keyboard smash a lot and say, holy crap, that was so good for me. I read this fic with knowledge of where it was going and I thought that made it better, but I know that not everyone wants to know ahead of time, so instead I'll just put a SPOILERS warning for the events of the fic here.

The fic pretty much drops you into the middle of the story, but that works well for this type of story, where you know about as much as Loki (Aleksander) knows, where you get a feel for this world that he's living in now and the author sets up this life for him beautifully, as he frequents a coffee shop and has a friendly relationship with Nat, the clever waitress there. And this is why I liked knowing ahead of time that this was an amnesia fic, because Natasha's quirk of her lips or the way she tilts her head or the look in her eyes, the way Aleksander picks up on little things she lies about, but doesn't really know (or seek) the truth, that builds the suspension of what's got to eventually happen, especially when her "ex-boyfriend", the giant blond guy shows up and stares really intently at Aleksander. The author does a gorgeous job of making me feel everything that's going on under the surface, even when Loki himself doesn't know who he is or what's going on around him, does a gorgeous job of building this life for him, this person he might be without his memories pushing at him, but lets you pick up on the background of what must have happened through subtle touches in the fic itself.

It's a short-ish piece, considering the set-up, and I desperately wish for more stories in this universe, because there's still a lot to be told (and some might find the ending dissatisfying, but I loved it) but I found it stood well on its own, too. Because, oh, the dynamic between Thor and Loki here, the intense attraction, the stirrings of whatever it was before and what it is now, the blend of the two, the intense desire and love Thor has for his brother, all of that is beautifully done here. Even the sex, which isn't that graphic or that long is super hot, both for the sex itself and because of the way it furthers that intense gravitational pull between them. This was a really, really good read for me today. (Thor/Loki, NSFW.)

Avengers/Thor: Water Hemlock by Aquamarine Stag - This is not precisely the Odin I saw in the movie (or the Frigga), that this Odin is more distant from Loki, doesn't entirely love him or consider him a son, but it's still closer to MCU Odin than it is anything else. And, with a lot of authors, I might have found myself put off by that, but here... I dunno, something about the way this author writes, it worked really well here. There's something otherworldly about this Loki, even as a child, something alluring and beautiful and graceful and dark. I love love love the theory that Loki is only half-Frost Giant, that he might be part-fey, and this fic doesn't go into much detail on it, but does touch on it and in a beautiful way. And I love the way Odin watches the relationship between Thor and Loki grow, how it's not perfect, but maybe it's a little too good, Thor's a little too protective at times, a little too wound around Loki's finger. And, oh, the ending is absolutely lovely. I'm having a terrible time writing a rec for this, but I really loved this piece a lot, I think it's one of my new favorites, the author has a way with the writing here, it's really beautiful. (Thor/Loki.)

Avengers/Thor: Caged by rainfall - Oh, this fic was such a good find for me today. It's fairly simple in concept--Loki's been brought back home after The Avengers, Thor goes to visit him, they're a tangled mess, and eventually Loki goads Thor into fucking him, which makes things even more complicated--but the author(s?) do such a gorgeous job with the characters that I was pulled right in, couldn't put it down, and was left rather breathless by the end of the four chapters that have been posted so far. I would have loved it for the porn, for WALL SEX YES GIVE ME MORE WALLSEX YOU GUYS THAT IS A THING I LOVE especially when it's super fucking hot like it was here because oh hey that was really good for me, for the sharp and painfully cutting back and forth discussion between Thor and Loki, but the way it was wrapped up in... this Loki is so damaged and sharp and angry and poisonous, but beautifully, brilliantly so. It's the kind of writing that leaves my heart aching because it digs into me so deeply, without being over the top about it, but instead gorgeously done.

The way the author(s?) used the sex to make everything more complicated and yet reveal so much about both of them, how tangled up in each other they are, how Thor loves his brother so very much and how Loki loves Thor back and that makes him want to drag Thor down to where Loki is, how this Thor is so different from the one he used to know, how Loki himself is so different from the brother Thor used to know, how they're both different now, how painful that is for both of them, even as Thor refuses to let it make a difference, all of it was brilliant. There are so many twists of words in this fic, jabs meant to hurt that instead wind around to reveal Loki's true feelings (and, oh, it's clear how much he loathes himself even without the writing ever directly saying so, and that's painful but so perfect), that I had that breathless feeling that's a bit ridiculous of me to get so wound up in characters, but sometimes it just happens. Especially in fic like this.

All of this with bonus sexytimes! Chapter four is practically half spent on Loki ruminating on all the things Thor did to him and the aches that caused, but it's in service of insight into Loki's character, what he's goaded Thor into doing and how he'll use it, how he'll be able to just look at Thor now and that will remind his brother of what they've done and won't that be a perfect way to ruin him? I'm explaining this terribly, but the fic is amazing and I don't think I've still yet covered everything I loved about it, because there was so much that I loved. I was wary when I first started it, because I don't like the idea of Asgard celebrating Loki's fall, but I think that's just Loki's twist on it, the way he poisons everything and views it badly, and so I didn't expect to love this as much as I did. But oh man so good for me, especially when Loki is a vicious little bastard who is full of such poison like he is here. (Thor/Loki, NSFW.)

Avengers/Thor: Caged (chapter 5) by rainfall - [NOTE: This is an update rec, so it will focus on/link to the current chapter, rather than the fic as a whole.] Oh, I have been waiting for this fic to update! And, oh, this is the newest fic that has the potential to break my heart, because I am so wary of it ending unhappily, I almost don't want to read any more chapters until it's finished (which is never going to happen, I'm not strong enough to resist it, not when it's so gorgeous and breathtakingly good so far!) because I don't know if the author(s) likes tragic or bittersweet or happy endings! I'm so nervous! But, at the same time, HOLY SHIT, GOOD THOR CHARACTERIZATION, there is not nearly enough of that in fandom! The previous chapters mostly focused on Loki and his manipulations and gorgeous poisonous thoughts, but this time (after everything that happened between them, multiple times) it's Thor's pov and his guilt about fucking his brother, what that means about their relationship, what that means about how he fears taking advantage of Loki, what that means about what kind of person he is to do such a thing, what that means about his relationship with Jane, what that means about everything. It's breathtakingly, almost painfully well written here, both in characterization and the gorgeousness of the writing itself. (Thor/Loki, NSFW.)

Make Me by Arkada, thor/loki, NSFW, dub-con, rough sex, bondage, bdsm, loki in chains, 4k
Thor loves Loki, but there is only one way Loki will allow him to show it.
I am not going to be able to write the rec I want to write for this fic because... just... holy hell, this fic was practically tailored to be everything I wanted after the latest TV spot dealing with Loki in chains. It was all about Thor understanding him, loving him, and being angry with him, while Loki only allows Thor to love him in this angry way. It's brilliant at everything it did, but most especially with the bdsm aspect because Loki's desperation for the attention of Thor's firm hand and the way he wants to be punished, the way he wants to be forced into this, so that he can have it without admitting that he wants it, but Thor is the perfect dom for him, because he pulls more out of Loki than he expects, his "So be it." when Loki won't give up anything any other way is perfect, because it blends together just how much Thor genuinely loves him, loves him with such an honesty that only Thor can do, even as Thor is angry with him and rough with him. Which is what Loki wants. And, oh, when Thor went that one step further, because he's no mere puppet for Loki to pluck the strings of, when he pulled more out of Loki and made him admit certain things, that was just. That was, not exaggerating, everything I wanted.

But that's all the more true becasue it came with some blisteringly hot sex, the kind that was just about painful and had me unable to start a new fic after I'd finished this one. I genuinely had to take a break after I finished this because it was so intense and so hot. This fic does everything right, that it's just as much about Thor here, how he crowds everything else out of Loki in these moments, how that sheer weight and presence of the character is absolutely incredible. It does justice to how sharp and bitter and twisted Loki is now, it doesn't flinch away from how viciously angry things are between them, even as it's so good and there's so much room for love here because Thor holds that firmly between them. This is a fic that might have rough sex, but it shows why Thor is such a good dom, because he loves so genuinely and he cares about what Loki wants, but doesn't just follow along behind. And that's why Loki responds to him. Plus, no, seriously, that sex was ridiculously hot, fuck.

The Weight of Family by Shiny_n_new, thor/loki (pre-slash?) + odin & thor, thor 2 spoilers, suicide ideation, 6.2k
Loki sees the past through new eyes and learns more about Thor than he ever intended to.
After I'd finished reading Postbellum, I had to immediately seek out other fic by the author and, oh. This fucking fic. Literally the only problem I have with this story is the lack of resolution and that's a deliberate choice by the author. Otherwise this fic is fucking exquisite and literally perfect. It's everything I have ever wanted, where it's basically Loki posing as Odin and the ravens being vicious trolls to him because they don't like him and then they mind-whammy him with showing him the past when he's seeking it and oh my god this is what I want. This is it. Shove it in Loki's face that Thor went utterly batshit over his loss and make it so that Loki cannot deny it and yet still keep everything brilliantly in character and thus find a balance between that sort of idfic thing I love (viewing the past is a thing that scratches my id perfectly when it's done well, okay) and yet... it's stunningly, genuinely good.

That this doesn't immediately solve everything is so fucking good, despite that even I watched the aftermath of Loki's suicide attempt with verging on misting up eyes, the scene between Odin and Thor being utter fucking perfection. And just. This author writes an utterly exquisite Thor characterization, to the point that I would honestly read 100k of this writing and whine that it wasn't nearly enough--every scene he's in is fucking perfection. And Loki! Coming to realize that posing as Odin is just another cage he's built for himself! Goddamn, that's so fucking good in this author's hands! There is insight and depth woven into every single line of this writing, both in the dialogue and the descriptions, the balance of Thor being both a warrior and pure power and terrifying force and good heart and maturing man. The awe-inspiring rage and sheer fucking presence he has! And yet no one is as good as Thor. Oh, an author who writes good Thor and emotions and subtext and a Loki who is brilliant and clever and sharp and dangerous and entirely his own worst enemy more than anyone else? I literally hurt after reading this, goddamn. I want to shove this author's fics at anyone trying to write Thor ever.

unttitled by thegoodlannister [ mobile ver. ], thor/loki + background avengers, valentine's day, fluff, 1.1k
"Loki, get your ass down here and deal with your brother before I’m forced to do something I regret!” The intercom crackles around Stark’s voice as Loki groans into his pillow. It’s far too early to deal with Stark’s childishness.
If I could, I would make Cat write in this fandom forever, because this is exactly what I wanted from a Thor/Loki Valentine's Day fic. It's just so much fun and I'm serious that I literally smiled the whole way through until my face hurt, it's happy and warm and all things good, but without sacrificing the sharpness or characterization for it. It's fluffy but this is really, really good Thor characterization and this is Loki who knows how to accept affection, but is still so jagged and this Tony voice is superb and I was all set to be tetchy at the way Clint talked to Thor, except then it was perfect. This is Thor with diction and though and care and this is how he would approach a Midgard holiday. And I loved this so very much, it really is a beautiful, beautiful piece.

Alienation of Affection by rayemars, thor/loki + background balder/loki, NSFW, jotunn!loki, intersex!loki, arranged marriage (balder/loki), 23.8k
The marriage was arranged as a way to end the skirmishes arising between Asheim and Jotunheim’s borders. Neither Asgard nor Utgard wished for another war; memories of the last one were too fresh.
I greatly enjoy many of the tropes of Jotunn!Loki in Asgard fic and I will always want more of them, but I'm also totally here for fic that's deft enough to go another way, as this one is. It's not about them falling in love here (though, that's not out of the question someday, but it doesn't need to be) and instead about the wariness between two people who don't know each other very well, who are not similar in many obvious ways. The fic does a gorgeous job of drawing them together, showing their chemistry and the attraction there, while not making it too easy. It works here, this is everything I could ask for from a fic like this, right down to the characterization, where Thor has all this heavy weight as a character, while Loki is this sharp dagger of a character. Where Thor is thoughtful and insightful but not manipulative. Where Loki is cunning and scheming and hard, but kind of a mess and vulnerable.

And, oh, the way Thor is so direct here and Loki can only push him so far (but certainly gets under Thor's skin at the same time), the way he's compassionate to Lokii's situation but also does what he thinks is the thing to do, the way he won't back down on pleasuring Loki, in making this good for him, even if it tears Loki open a little bit at the seams, yes, that is Thor and that is why Loki gravitates to him in every universe, because some part of him craves being dashed on the rocks of Thor and being accepted. Add in the really, really satisfying sex, how long it takes to ease Loki open and work into him, jesus, it was good. And was further used to show Thor's patience and determination, to show Loki's willingness to hurt himself in order to protect himself, but then opening up as a character, and, yeah, this was a goddamned joy to read.

Bargaining by proantagonist, thor & loki + odin & loki + frigga & loki + other marvel characters, background refereneces to canon pairings, time travel, post-the dark world, some jotunn!loki, 110.4k
Faced with an eternity without his brother, Loki strikes a bargain to change the past. Post TDW.
Chapters 1-23: I am going to lose my shit over this fic and write a terrible rec, one that probably doesn't even say half of what I want to convey about my feelings for this story. Let's start with how I thought, with crystal clarity, about a third of the way through the fic, that I didn't even care anymore if this fic wound up horribly betraying me in the ways that fic sometimes does, because what it had given me up to that point already was so exquisite and glorious that I honestly didn't care in that moment. Because this fic made me fucking bawl when it was the right moment to do so--more than once, actually. This is a time-travel fic, where Thor's death in the future sends him into utter desperation and he makes a bargain to go back and change things, except he ends up further back in time than he intended. The thing about time travel fic is that it's such an intriguing idea, one that has such potential to fix things, to contrast against what the traveler has experienced against what the characters around them haven't, that build-up to a reveal and the changes that can be made. It's a difficult one to pull off, though, because you have to be careful of so many things, like staying true to the spirit of the characters and laying down some internal rules to how things would play out, so that it's a wortwhile story to be told instead of just an instant fix, and to find the balance between echoing canon and yet still making this have a point. This fic executes all these things flawlessly, to the point that I am utterly enthralled while reading and I didn't want to come up for air at all.

Right from the beginning, I was wound so incredibly tense because Loki is so... Loki and he's self-destructive and angry and a mess, but none of the people around him are aware of just how much of a mess he is, so they don't know what to look for, which means that he's going to have a new kind of power over everyone and, as much as I want Loki to fix things, that's not really who he is. Except, in some ways, he sort of is in these circumstances, but done in such a way that I wholly believe that Loki would act this way. The fic is utterly exquisite about putting Loki into circumstances that siphon away just a bit of his anger here and there, it chips away at his excuses for why he acts the way he does, it puts him in situations that reshape the way he thinks and sees things, until he's left floundering and his worldview is maybe starting to heal.

The gorgeous thing about this, however, is that it doesn't mean that Loki is suddenly all better, because it's been nearly 90k and he's still a goddamned mess and he's still twisted up inside and he's still so full of anger and poison and raw hurt, in the way he absolutely would be. This is not a fic that's about taking the easy way out and I fully expect more heartbreak or possibly even for my soul to be crushed by the time it gets to the end, which could be any moment now or could be another 100k from now, I honestly don't know. But this is not the same Loki that was the one we saw in TDW, this is not the same Loki that we saw at the beginning of the fic, even when so much is still the same and the author is brilliant for how well portrayed he is. And this is a Loki-centric fic, so much of my talking about it and the fic focuses on his character, but I never feel that the other characters around him aren't done justice to. Each member of his family, as well as the brief scenes of Sif and the W3, are done just as brilliantly. This Thor is Thor and I love that the circumstances of his banishment were changed, so he's a little different here as well, but he maintains that larger than life presence, that utter bulldozer of a personality, yet who is becoming legitimately thoughtful and wise, because of his love for Loki and his worry over his brother.

Every scene where Thor tries to drag the truth out of Loki is gorgeous, because he wrecks Loki emotionally in the best of ways, because Loki loves him so much and is doing all of this for Thor (and for his mother) and Thor refuses to back down, Thor will not surrender Loki for anything, neither to him nor to the madness that's trying to steal his brother away, even as he learns when to back off and give Loki some breathing room now and again. Thor isn't the focus here, but the fic knows that he's very much one of the central pillars of Loki's world and knows how to create this amazing balance between the story being about Loki, but Thor is clearly a main character in the greater whole of Asgard, which is exactly what I want from fic. Because that allows the writer to do what they do brilliantly here--show the progression of Loki's relationships and worldviews. His conversations with Frigga are heartwrenching, as she senses something is wrong with him and won't browbeat it out of him, but makes it clear she loves him with all her heart and the guilt Loki feels at remembering her death is just gorgeous.

And then. Every scene between Odin and Loki. Goddamn. It's complicated and twisting and I'm not sure what's entirely going on, because the writer is very aware of the similarities between the characters (for all that they're different in other ways) and I don't know how it will ultimately end up. But Odin being brilliant and he knows shit is up with Loki and how he handles that, both in good ways and bad ways, is incredible. Eventually, of course, some truths have to come out, and every revelation scene is incredibly satisfying for me as a reader, because of the build-up and because it's so in character that I could just about writhe around on the floor for it. Loki's screaming at his parents when they realize he knows he's Jotunn, I'm serious, there were tears in my eyes for that one. I don't want to say more, because I can't spoil that scene, but goddamn that was one of the most masterful things I've read in awhile. And that's hardly the last utterly fascinating conversation, where Odin looks very sharply at Loki and is slowly unraveling the mystery around him.

But it's not just all relationship or emotional stuff, it's also plot, as Loki tries to put right all the things that went wrong or that would put his family in danger. This means more time acting as Asgard's king in a legitimate way and how he handles that and what that means for his relationship with Jotunheim. His handling of everything with Malekith and the Aether, both in how he has to try to hide what he knows ahead of time (and why he can't say more), is deliciously done and so interesting, because he's using what he knows from the first timeline and yet things are changing and he can't always predict what will happen differently--which often makes for some of the most tension-filled scenes I've read in a fic in a long time. I was practically tripping over myself to read just "a few more pages" before bed, staying up far later than I should have because I could not put it down.

I want to talk so much more about this fic, I want to talk about specific scenes, I want to talk about every notch on the dial of Loki's anger that's cycled through, I want to talk about the way Thor is this huge presence in Loki's life, I want to talk about the way he won't let go of Loki and how he steamrolls right over Loki's protests and yet he's impossible not to love so dearly, I want to talk about the brilliant Odin characterization, I want to talk about where I think the plot might be headed, I want to talk about how my heart was in my throat when Algrim came to Asgard, I want to talk about Odin being so angry with Loki, who has unleashed all this hatred at him, who is and yet isn't the same as he was in the first timeline, I want to talk about all of this. I want to even sit down and read the comments other people have left and then rewrite this rec to be twice as long as it already is (except I don't trust this fandom to react well to the complicated circumstances of this fic, because the WHOLE POINT is that it's complicated and it's not about pointing fingers of blame and that's why THIS IS THE TIME TRAVEL FIC OF MY DREAMS), I want to take notes while rereading chapters, and I just really, really want to make people read it with me. READ IT, OKAY.

Chapters 24: When you're reading a fic for awhile, catch up, wait for a bit, and then have a new chapter, yout hink that it can't measure up, you think, oh, it won't make me cry again or anything, even if I greatly enjoy it. And most of this chapter was like, though that did not take away from the quality of it, as it was still just as fascinating and engrossing and constructing something enthralling as ever! The world-building of Jotunheim was excellent, the things Loki learned while there, the use of Helblindi and Byleister were perfect! I would have been interested in them just for their own sake (both were perfect, I loved Helblindi's almost calm, literal way of speaking and irritating, aggressive little shit Byleister was seriously possibly my favorite version of the character yet!), but even more so for how the fic used them to dismantle that one last issue he had, how all his excuses were gone now, how there's a new sense of peace in him that's been earned, both by the character and the fic. The brief moments of Loki experiencing being an older brother were also perfect--hilarious and with a point to them, to help him learn just a bit more still.

Then the final thousand words of this chapter came and, oh, hey, there's where all my tears went. The combination of how at peace he is with his fate, the way Thor hangs on so tightly but has to watch Loki fall away again, how ready Loki is to die now... it completely wrecked me, because this author did such a masterful job on this fic. Sure, it's interesting on a "exploring alien worlds is cool!" level, it's fun to see the different ways authors come up with bringing culture and life to Jotunheim, and I would have been happy to spend more time there, even as anxious as I was to get back to the rest of the story. But seeing Loki spend time there, all these other excuses melted away from him and deliberately peeled away by the story, you understood that he was ready to see the Jotnar as people instead of monsters, that he was ready to see that his actions were his own, rather than because he was from a race of monsters. And I love that they weren't perfect and peaceful and loving, but instead that they were all too... well, not human, but normal. Irritating at times, admirable at other times, and full of their own personalities and probably their own stories, even if we didn't have time to get into them.

I am so anticapting the ending of this one and yet dreading it all the same. orz

Chapters 25: One of the things I felt most strongly (all over again) while reading this chapter is that this is a time travel fic that gets the point of what makes time travel fic the most delicious for me--that it's not about erasing the past or undoing those events, that this story wouldn't have even half of its impact if those things had never happened. This is a story that's absolutely about growing from there, even as Loki goes back and changes things, that they had to happen so that he could come to terms with himself and mend his sense of self and all the damage that that anger did to him. It's part of him, it always will be, but the point is that reliving those years helped him grow from it. And then you put that together with the same sense of... in the previous chapter's rec, I mentioned that reading a fic chapter to chapter gives you that feeling of, "Oh, I've built this fic up so much, it can't possibly hit me as hard again without the same amount of time to build up to the emotional climaxes." and that proves true for the first 2/3rds of the fic and then, wham, I'm crying again. I had a few face-crumpling moments (literally my face made that squishy look where I start to get a little weepy, but I wasn't quite at tears yet) but then, by the end, yeah, this got me.

Because the emotional climax of this story was masterful, a brilliant weaving together of the past timeline with this one, the way Odin especially is written is breathtaking and everything all just fits together with what we know of canon and what we've seen in this timeline. Loki is beautifully written and I was practically fidgeting through the whole chapter, because it was a struggle not to trip over myself to get to the next line given just how deeply enthralled I was. This is an absolute must read in the fandom and post-TDW fic that fixes the tragedies while adding new ones and not having those things be a waste. They had to happen to get the characters where they are here! But I can't talk much more about that without going into spoilers that I really don't think you should be warned about ahead of time, so beyond this point I will give a SPOILERS FOR THIS CHAPTER warning.

Because I really do need to talk about the events of previous chapters and their meaning and what happened here. I strongly suspected what was going to happen here, as I'd read some of the comments and theories going on there, which made sense to me given the little clues along the way, but I was blown over by how they didn't affect the impact of it at all, I sitll felt jumpy and restless and fidgeting because I was so anxious about how it would all go down and then it was happening and a;slkdjfal;kjs is basically all I can come up with! Loki's reaction sent me into tears because it was just such the perfect culmination--that entire conversation where Odin is yelling at him, where he is so angry at Loki for all this shit, both in the current timeline and the previous one now that he remembers it, but the fic breathtakingly explains why Odin acted the way he did and gave depth to the things he said and put the two of them together beautifully, they made sense together, how we saw two such different reactions from a character, how they were the same person in just slightly different circumstances. Gorgeous. And this is the chapter where I realized, yeah, why Loki's parents' deaths were necessary to his character arc--for him to be able to grieve in a way that doesn't end in his ruination of himself.

Yes, of course I would have preferred that everything was fixed and happy and everyone got to live! But the fic had painted a specific path for itself and it stuck to it, this was clearly planned from the beginning and the little clues along the way were beautifully done and it made sense to me, that Loki had to learn to deal with loss in a way that didn't break him. And, oh, how complicated everyone is here, how no one is wholly good or bad, no one is perfect, how Odin and Loki are alike in a lot of ways and we see that all the more clearly, as they're the focus of much of this fic! But then there's Thor, who has such nobility at heart, but there's a lot piled on him and everything that breaks over him, the dozen different things that crash over him all at once, it's got to be a brutal day, even as I know it won't break him. The most beautiful thing this fic does is showing us Loki's more sympathetic and good-intentioned side but not letting go of just how much he hurts the people that care about him, that all the self-recrimination and sorrow in the world don't mean he's not still hurting people. And that the fic accepts this and portrays it as this complicated thing, is brilliant.

ALL: I had to wait a week to read the final chapter of this fic because I honestly was not ready and part of me is terribly sad that I will have no more of this. Good post-TDW fic is so terribly hard to find, but this fic is so well-done that it fills the gap of a dozen of them, so I'm torn between being satisfied and yet maybe now wanting more of this kind of thing all the more. I've talked twice before about what time travel fic done right means to me, but it's still true here, that this is a story that doesn't seek to undo the importance of canon events, because the events of this fic would be meaningless without them, and that is how you do time travel fic! It's also about slowly stripping away the excuses Loki used for his actions, both to redeem him/grant him some peace, but also to help him truly repair things and understand the why of it. This isn't a story that's about punishing Loki or cutting out the sympathy for him, but instead about healing and repairing him, that it's about how he's put into the right circumstances and given the time to come to terms with them.

And it's also still true that I got teary-eyed during the chapter despite high expectations and the assumption that, oh, the fic couldn't do it to me again. I was so wary about Loki's trial here, his self-sabotage streak still going strong and all those who wanted his head, but reading through it, I understood why it was necessary (as so much in this fic becomes necessary when I got to the end and thought about how things might have gone differently, had events been tweaked here and there, that these were choices made with deliberation by the author), why it needed to turn out the way it did. It was painful, but did justice to everything the story needed in these final moments. And, oh, that it was down to Thor and Loki in the end. That's just as it needed to be. It works on a narrative level, because there are so many interesting relationships Loki has in this story, so many that are important and drove so much of the fic, but at the end, it always seems to come down to those two, but it also works on a character level because, oh, you may not see it as directly as you do with Loki, but this was not an easy road for Thor, either. His reasonings during Loki's trial, when you start to understand what he's doing, are just... feelings-crushing, because this is how it would go, now that Thor better understands Loki, after all that's happened.

This is a fic about using what we've seen in canon, addressing those issues, but not trying to tear them down as if they'd never happened, both in terms of plot, but also in terms of character. This isn't about forgetting that the canon events happened or undoing them, this is about moving forward from them, for all that it's a time travel fic. This is about Loki learning to make peace with himself, learning to let others in, and learning to understand that he's not disconnected from everyone else, that what happens to him affects other people. And, fuck, I think this fic may have spoiled me for wanting more plotty post-TDW fic and my high expectations out of them! Which is both a blessing and a curse, but one I will absolutely take, every time.
