Rest with me Awhile by Pakeha, thor/loki + other asgardians, past pregnant!loki, mercreature!loki, off-screen implications of rape, 3.6k
Thor, a human prince, and Loki, his half-octopus friend, have a conversation. The situation is unconventional at best, but they make it work.
This is the first part in a series of fics that should be read in order. When I first got into fandom, I was like, "...a mer!Loki AU? Hrm." Give me a couple of months in the fandom, though? Holy shit, let me at that!! Especially when it's written the way this author writes, which is SO GOOD OMG. The beginning is a touch rough (the writing could use a few proofreading corrections) and her Thor characterization takes a bit to settle, but right from the beginning, there's this quality to the writing, this atmosphere that's... it's gorgeously written and it's like a fairy tale, but one of the sharper, more dangerous ones, yet it's not a heartbreaker of a fic. It's pretty much fucking perfect, right from the beginning, when human!prince Thor is conversing with mercreature!Loki, who has not had a good life in his kingdom, which makes him angry and razor sharp and cutting, but Thor already loves him anyway and realizes that octo!Loki has been knocked up and offers to let him stay in his kingdom where he'll be safe and a;sldkfj;alsk the tension between the characters, how wary and mistrustful this Loki is, it's so gorgeously done. One of the things I especially loved is that Loki can't speak in the air, but Thor can't speak underwater, but they need to be in the same place to hear each other, but that means having a conversation is difficult for the author to get across when they keep going back and forth, but this author kept my attention through it the entire time! I was so delighted by that. I tore through this and went straight on to the second one immediately.

It's a Learning Process by Pakeha, thor/loki + other asgardians, past pregnant!loki, mercreature!loki, 3.3k
Parenting. Thor thinks Loki is doing it wrong. Loki begs to differ.
This is the second part in a series of fics that should be read in order.
One of the things that I don't see often enough (for my tastes) in fandom is Loki actually raising his kids, so that this series had octo!Loki actually having his daughter and raising her as an actually good parent, even if other people don't necessarily understand that (and get freaked out by the way he treats her), especially Thor, who's just totally in love with the little baby already. This fic also works on showing how Loki's magic works in this universe, how he's still so sharp and angry and cutting, how he seems to not care when he just takes off, how he does things even now that surprise Thor. And, oh, I love that even as mean as this Loki is, you can tell he trusts Thor, that he cares about him and for him, that he makes surprisingly huge sacrifices (for him) to stay here. All of this wrapped up in beautifully written words that give this impression of... one of those darker fairy tales that I love so much. Not the cruel ones, but the ones that can be harsh and make the characters work for their happy endings. Perfect.

When the Sea shall Give up Her Dead by Pakeha, thor/loki + other asgardians, past pregnant!loki, mercreature!loki, 5.5k
When a murdered mercreature washes up on the rocks the violence strikes a little too close to home for Thor. By all appearances, Loki could care less.
This is the third part in a series of fics that should be read in order.
With the first two fics of this series, I knew I was enjoying them. But I think it was around this fic in particular that I knew I was going to be forever in love with this series. The quiet world-building in the background, of this kingdom by the sea that is Asgard, of the implications of the underwater kingdom that Loki hailed from, it's gorgeously built up through this fic, almost without me realizing it. And, as the summary says, when a murdered mercreature washes up on the shore and Loki is distinctuly uncaring, it unsettles something in Thor and the way the author did this, the implications of it, the way it's never actually explained, but, oh, you get it? Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. This is on top of Loki still adjusting to his new human body and walking about Asgard with the rest of the humans and the ever-growing tension with Thor, which the author communicates through little touches or twists of words or the way they look at each other, the way Loki tries so hard to keep Thor at arm's length, but you can feel that Thor works his way in anyway. Oh, it's so gorgeous, this country by the sea and the way I can nearly feel the sea breeze right along with the characters and it's just so... it's subtle in a way that I would not have expected from a potentially cracky au fic idea. Instead, no, this fic is brilliant and haunting in all the right places.

Dig 'til you Hit Water by Pakeha, thor/loki + other asgardians, past pregnant!loki, mercreature!loki, 9.1k
Moving to Asgard is a long adjustment process for Loki. Not that he'll ever admit that he's ill-adjusted. Meanwhile Thor galumphs and makes a general mess of things until somehow, miraculously, he starts to get things right.
This is the fourth fic in a series of fics that should be read in order.
So, the previous fic is where this series kind of really kicked into the next gear and this fic continues that trend with an absolutely gorgeous setting once again and brilliant interactions between characters. Thor keeps trying to get Loki to come to the royal family dinners, Loki keeps refusing because he's Loki and he doesn't enjoy social interaction much and he's pushing himself too hard, but he's just so... unsettled. And that's gorgeously done as well, the author's deft and subtle hand when writing his character, when he takes time for himself and there's something so angry there, something so nearly poisonous, but also something that's not bad at all, oh, it's beautifully done. And this Thor! I fell rather in love with this Thor by this point in time in the story, because he's not stupid by any means, he just doesn't always think or understand the full implications of what Loki's been through (but he's getting there), which echoes the canon movies without being directly parallel to them and, oh, that's gorgeous, too.

But the other thing that just had me flopping around in my feelings and letting everyone know they should just go on without me was the interaction between Loki and Frigga in this chapter. She's so elegant and graceful and surprisingly cunning in her own way, which is difficult to write one character like that, much less two. But this author does it, making the (fairly brief, but still amazing) interaction between Frigga and Loki almost a little breathless to watch, even when it's as simple as her asking for his advice on how to deal with a mistletoe infestation on their trees! This Loki continues to be amazing as he hides himself away and the author never says why, which is amazing, because you understand anyway. And, oh, the scene where Thor finally speaks something of his (rather obvious) feelings for Loki, my heart was just in this author's hands. All this AND Loki taking care of his daughter the entire time, being a parent to her! Ugh, so good.

Work your way Inside by Pakeha, thor/loki + other asgardians, NSFW, past pregnant!loki, mercreature!loki, 8.5k
There are profound differences between Thor and Odin, differences which leave Thor unsettled after a disagreement on the training field. Loki handles the aftermath.
This is the fifth fic in a series of fics that should be read in order.
Once again, this author uses some beautiful background world-building (a training day that Thor leads for the first time, as he grows closer to the crown) to show both some excellent Thor characterization (and why everyone loves him, why they will be forever loyal to him) and move the plot forward, when Odin disagrees with the way Thor handles himself and Loki watches the scene. The way that moves everything forward, without the author having to explain why? The actual subtle writing in the relationship? The way Loki's past hurt is still always under the surface, the way Thor has worked to have a better understanding of it, without the author having to explain it? The way it thrums under the surface, but Loki refuses to let it hold him back? The parallels and contrasts drawn between Thor and Loki? Oh, my god, just here. Have my heart. I don't need it anymore. And that was before the author got to them finally going to bed together, the way I would have loved this story with my whole heart even if it hadn't been good porn, but, oh, it was. The character insight was lovely, but there was also an intensity that I felt like I haven't seen that level of in awhile and I don't think it was just that I was really invested in these characters (though, I was that, too), but that the author just wrote really good, intense sex here. I fear this series has ruined me for all other mercreature!AU fics now.

If you Must Remember, Let it be Like this by Pakeha, thor/loki + other asgardians, NSFW, past pregnant!loki, mercreature!loki, 2.9k
Thor was nine when Loki rescued him from drowning. It was rather a big deal, but Loki insists he barely remembers.
This is the sixth fic in a series of fics that should be read in order.
I loved this story because it's... well, it has all the things the previous fics had, which is amazing writing, gorgeous characterization, actual subtlety when dealing with these people, beautiful world building around them, etc. But even beyond that this fic was... it was about Thor remembering the first day that he and Loki met, the day that Loki saved him after he fell into the ocean, which Loki says he doesn't remember that well. And it's almost an argument, that Loki doesn't remember such an important day, this incredible mix of Loki lying about how much he remembers, being angry that Thor idealizes that day (because Loki cares and doesn't want Thor to care so much about him like that), Thor being angry that Loki treats that day as nothing special when it's such an important day, and all this tension cutting into everything and yet... somehow they make it through and, oh, jesus, this author just had my heart here. All of this AND Loki's daughter, baby Gudrun, sits on Thor's lap as he loves that baby girl as much as he loves Loki. SO MANY FEELINGS.

The god visits him long past when there was reason to divide existence into measurements of time. Past when he remembers how such division is done.
Imagine my surprise to find a second mermaid!Loki fic in such a short time! And, oh, this one wasn't based on the same art (which is amazing in and of itself!), so it goes a little differently and I'll just say that... oh, man, it's REALLY GOOD. It's everything I wanted out of mermaid!Loki fic and the characterization is so fucking gorgeous. Beyond that, I'm going to put a SPOILER WARNING on this rec because, while I won't give the entire fic away, I am going to talk about something you may want to be a surprise. And I do think this one works really well if you don't know what the author is setting up here!

This is a short piece, but it packs a hell of a punch when the author fills in the background of mermaid!Loki and the circumstances he finds himself in and I love the quiet realization that, oh, this is our Loki who has been banished without his memories and that there's this... amazing sense of scope here, for these characters who are gods, how so much time passes and it's not much time at all to them. There's an elegance to the writing here and I love that this is not precisely a happy fic, but it's not a tragic fic, either. Instead, this is... Thor and Loki, this is beautifully touched with different elements of their backgrounds, this is a gorgeous and perfect ending. I absolutely fell in love with this and really just want to share it with the world.

Unexpected Adventure by CalciferCai, thor/loki, nsfw, mer!loki, 1.4k
Adventurer Thor runs into Siren Loki.
This is a short piece, but I have the most ridiculous weakness for anything to do with mercreature!Loki that of course I was going to read it! And this is more a sketch than a fully realized fic, but it has a charm to it that caught my attention and made me enjoy it a lot. I love the idea of Loki as a siren, luring Thor in and seducing him, while Thor is just completely taken with him, until he's completely gone on Loki. Sure, I'd have loved more of this one, to know what happens next, but I also like that it's just this quick sketch of a fic, more about the luring in than about what happens next. Ahhhh, I want so many mer!Loki fics now. SO MANY.

A leg to stand on by yourfriendlyneighborhoodanon, thor/loki, NSFW, mer!loki, rough sex, 3.6k
Loki woke up one morning with the strangest feeling. As he drifted further out of his dreams and towards wakefulness, Loki gave a small frown of confusion. Why did he feel the sting of magic in him? Why did he feel so... small? What was going on? Thor decides to teach Loki about the pleasures of his new human body...
jfc, how the hell am I supposed to write a rec for this fic that's not just, "Holy shit, that was really fucking hot."?? BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO THAT. At least not as well as I'd like. But, wow, that was really fucking hot. I desperately love mer!Loki already, so having him wake up with a new pair of legs and not really sure how to use them, but still decides to goad Thor into a really intensely thorough fucking of this new body? Jesus. Loki being so sharp and almost vicious in his surprise and then taunting Thor is what makes the sex that much better, because it's clear that he wants this to be rough, he chooses to provoke Thor's temper and his ego, so when Thor does stop holding back and unleashes himself on Loki, pushing him down onto the bed and lifting his ass up, it's just really good for me and really satisfying. There's a rough edge to the sex, but that's what both of them want, Loki especially enjoying how hard Thor is on him, which is what made it work for me.

Set in an Alternate Universe where Thor is a human Viking, the headstrong young Prince has set sail in search of a mysterious "monster" that has been destroying ships and luring men to their deaths. The journey appears hopeless at first, but he cannot turn back for his honor is at stake and he fears he will never be king if he fails. Finally there comes a clue, and on an unknown island rimmed with the skeletons of sunken ships, Thor finds that this "monster" is anything but what he expects.
I love all things mer!Loki, so I was excited by Lady Loki here and I definitely found that that's when this fic was at its best. It has a strong Thor presence and the dynamic is lovely, with Loki being sensual and seductive to Thor's direct and forthright ways. He has that anger without being a jerk about it that really works for me with Thor's character, which can be a surprisingly difficult balance at times in this fandom. I'm also enjoying the world building a lot here! The author sets it up very well, there's a smoothness and richness to the descriptions and details worked into the writing, lending it a sort of fairy tale type of feel while still being a more direct, sharp story. Sometimes it's just a simply description of the previous boats that have crashed and sank into the lagoon of Loki's island or the description of the pearls around her neck, but other times it's more substantial in the way this feels well thought out.

I do like the ideas the fic puts forth, the use of Loki's magic and shapeshifting, the blurring of gender lines here and how he molds himself to Thor's wishes without losing that this is still entirely Loki, who is wily and cunning and sly and seductive. As mentioned, I do think this fic is at its strongest when Loki is in the shape of a woman (and I love that she is just as much Loki as the male form, that truly both are just extensions of Loki, same as her Jotunn form is), but perhaps at least some part of that is that I want Lady Loki in this. It's also, though, that the scene where Thor climbs the cliff to get to her and the rough way he puts her on her back and fucks into her, all while she lures him ever closer, is super hot, omg. That was far and away my favorite part of the fic and I'm eager to see where the rest of this one goes!

Supposedly enemies, the two mermen have been meeting in secret for months for sex. Today, they want to try something different. Have sex while Thor is still in merman!form. "
This fic is a bit rough around the edges, along with a few typos and epithets, but I love mer!Thor and mer!Loki and the heart of this fic was absolutely there. There's a lot of potential with this author, I definitely, definitely want more from them and this fic was... it was fun and messy and enthusiastic and Loki enjoys being tied up and fucked in human form until he's completely wrecked and Thor's mer!cock is pretty glorious. This is just one of those that's fun and light-hearted and a nice treat to have, where I'd love to see more Thor/Loki from this author.

Mermaid Mischief by gemiphyros [ mobile ver. ], thor/loki, pirate!thor + mer!loki, ~1k
It was not a friendly place; but mermaids were not friendly creatures.
So, I loved that mermaid!Loki and pirate!Thor fanart from under-base, but, oh, fic based on it? Yes, good fandom, GOOD. Especially when Loki is the kind of mermaid (merman, I guess?) who is seductive and sly and kind of totally fucking evil. The best kind of mermaid there is!! But, at the same time, you can tell he likes Thor and helps him out and, oh, I wanted more from this because it's such a great sketch of a story, it's such a great dynamic between the two of them, and really nicely written. It's short, but awesome. *checks mermaid!Loki off the list of things this fandom needs* ....except there still totally needs to be more mermaid fic, okay.

The Little Mermaid, Thorki version or, how jotun-mer-Loki won himself a prince and a pair of legs, not necessarily in that order.
I fucking love fairy tales and I fucking love The Little Mermaid, so I am totally here for this, especially as it felt like a mix of Disney and a dash of the original fairy tale and then throwing Thor/Loki into it. I love how Loki fits so well with Ariel, who wriggled and writhed and dug her fingers into what she wanted, no matter what deal she had to make. I kept thinking about these characters in terms of Harry Potter, how Ariel is a straight up Slytherin... and so is Loki, neither of which is a bad thing! But that's why this fits so well, the greater parallels of Loki leaving behind one world for this one are fun, but the personal level is where it's at for me. The brief images of porn, Loki on Thor's lap with his skirts spread out so no one could see, the way he flashed himself at Thor to tempt him, the way he wrapped his human legs around Thor when finally they could fuck, all of that was grand. I love fairy tales and this was lovely.
