- Katekyou Hitman Reborn! - Zelophilia by Enkidu - As I mentioned in a previous rec, Mukuro/Hibari is something I saw in the manga, of course, but never really sought out, as by the time I was entering into fandom, I was far more interested in Dino/Hibari, but after reading some of these fics... there's so much of that same harsh intensity between these characters, the way I could believe they would actually keep Hibari's attention long enough for something to happen. Or pin Hibari down long enough to make him pay attention. Between the implications of Dino/Hibari here (which were hot as hell, too) and the implications of what Mukuro was going to attempt to do to Hibari, how creepy and disturbing and hot those implications were, just... mmm, yes. I am going to be spoiled as hell by this kink meme's responses. (Dino/Hibari, Mukuro/Hibari, Mukuro/Hibari/Dino?)
- Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - Hi-tch Hi-ker's Guide by kasugai_gummie - Oh, my god, this is my new favorite fic in the fandom, totally. It's hard to explain why, other than that it's a crack concept pulled off brilliantly, so that it was actually funny instead of being flat or too over the top, I was totally just about crying with laughter at the mental image by the end. Just. Every little implication of this fic is beautiful, every little moment with both Hibird and Fukurou (Mukuro's owl) is perfect and a;sdlfkjalskjdljkas there is an accompanying sketch that is also the most brilliant thing I have seen all day. I just. I dissolved laughter, okay? And every time I think about the image at the end again. ♥ (....um. Mukuowl+Hibird counts as a pairing, I think?) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - I, the Conqueror is Conquered! by Enkidu - I've been kind of wanting something to be done with Lambo and I-Pin, because they would be so cute together and their early interaction was so adorable and they both grew up to be so hot. After awhile, I kind of lost track of the thought as other stuff started happening in the manga, but then I found this fic and... as;dljalskj yes it'd be so great. And this fic was adorable, Lambo trying to remain calm and yet still being so nervous and childish even though he's a lot older now and I just-- The ending-- The ending was perfect. The ending was perfect for the Reborn! series. (Lambo/I-Pin.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - Egg by kasugai_gummie - S-speaking of absolutely hilarious uses of the animals (especially when it involves hilarity with their owners), this too is beautiful. I'm not sure what's better, the image of Enzio and Hibird's spawn or the priceless reactions from both Dino and Hibari. I mean. Watching Dino go WTFFFFFF at the whole thing was great, b-but... Hibari's parting words are beautiful. ;__;b (Enzio/Hibird.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - untitled by Enkidu - After all the Ryouhei/Hibari fanart I browsed through the other day and given my love for just about anything with Hibari, I was in the right frame of mind to try a Ryouhei/Hibari fic, especially since it was from the kink meme. And this is exactly what I was hoping to get out of the ficlet--a short moment where they're fighting, both such strong people and it's a hard fight, and who really knows where the fight ends and the sex begins and ends and the fight begins again, which is what made it fantastic for these two. It was genuinely hot and rough and Hibari was so Hibari and then... alsdkfjalskdjlfaksjd the last two lines were beautiful. (Ryouhei/Hibari, around R-rated content.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - The Thing About Pants by Enkidu - I clicked on this fic because I was curious to read a fic with Tsuna/Kyouko, since I always thought they were cute, and they are adorable here, but it's more on the level of what you'd find in canon. Except... ads;lfkalkajsdflkajs ahahahaha Gokudera is my favorite for reasons exactly like this, no matter how much I love other characters or focus on them, this is why I love Gokudera. Because he doesn't even think twice about it. Also, the ending (and the potential for what else Gokudera may very well have been capable of) are total LOL and I could just about see this coming right out of the manga itself. (Some Tsuna/Kyouko on the level of canon and Gokudera/Tsuna fans might enjoy as well.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - Five Times Hibari Tried to get Rid of Ryohei Permanently by Pero - The fic is pretty much exactly as the title states and, the longer I'm in fandom, the more I kinda like the idea of Ryouhei/Hibari, so I was in the right frame of mind to read this and... as;dflkjasdlkj AHAHAHAHA SO HILARIOUS. Her Ryouhei is totally and utterly fantastic and spot-on in his dense enthusiasm and her Hibari is also totally spot on in his casually violent attempts to get rid of the annoying pest. It's a great use of putting someone so cheerful together with someone like Hibari and Pero puts in all these little details that make me able to just picture the whole thing perfectly. I LOL'd. (This is mostly pretty gen? But you can read Ryouhei/Hibari into it if you want.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - The Tsuna Effect by half_sleeping - One of the most awesome things about the REBORN! fandom is that, when I looked at this fic being Xanxus/Tsuna (which is not a pairing I particularly ship), I felt absolutely no animosity towards it and instead mild curiosity about it, clicking on it to read. I love this fandom for making me not give a shit about who ships what and being willing to try just about anything. Especially when it gets me awesome fic like this, where Xanxus' inner monologue is hilarious and just so-- He's so irritated by Tsuna not being trash when, by all rights and the natural order of things, he should be and I love, love, love the author for writing the fic from his perspective, doing a brilliant job with the characterization (ad;flkjasdlkja any time Squalo was mentioned!! XDDD) and still making it utterly hilarious. Also, the end was beautiful. ;__;b (Xanxus/Tsuna.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - The After Effect by half_sleeping - So, naturally, after reading the previous Xanxus/Tsuna fic, I decided to click on this one as well. (While I think you could read this one on its own, I find it better if you've read the first one beforehand.) And I could not stop grinning and laughing the entire way through this fic because it's just so beautifully timed and Xanxus' irritation and put-upon matter are so easy to see in my mind's eye. He just completely does not understand how this nice idiot manages to not only survive in the mafia world, he thrives in it and everyone comes to love him and it's just so hilarious watching Xanxus' head try not to explode. I love this author's take on the pairing so, so much. (Xanxus/Tsuna.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - untitled by nymous_fic - I've looked at a fair amount of Yamamoto/Hibari fanart in the few months that I've been in the REBORN! fandom, but it was always one of those pairings that I sort of put in that mental "fanart only" catagory, because I wasn't sure how you'd make it work as a fic. But I'd like the author's previous fic and I like Hibari a lot (I know, I've been subtle about that) and I'm really glad I gave this fic a chance, it was really good. It's almost a simple piece, set just after a death in the family and Yamamoto isn't quite okay, but he's still very much Yamamoto and Hibari's reactions to that are also just spot-on. The writing is fantastic as well and I-- I love the KHR fandom a whole lot right now (Yamamoto/Hibari.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - The Fall after the Pride of Vongola by unlock - Hibari/Chrome is one of those pairings that... it seems like crack, like something I would only want to see in fanart, but... well, this fandom may have given me OTPs, but it's also made me open to a lot of different things. And, sure, this fic has implied death of major characters, but... I like Hibari. I'll ship him with anyone. So, I read. And I'm glad I did because it wasn't really so much a ship as it was interaction, a beautiful one at that. Chrome and Hibari are two characters that are both very... direct and matter-of-fact, the author wrote them beautifully in the way that Hibari managed to comfort her in his own way, the only way she would have accepted, and the writing was lovely for it. I'm definitely looking forward to more in this series of ficlets. (This is gen, but those who like Hibari/Chrome might like this, too.)  - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - Samurai Training [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Oh, man. It took ONE illustration from this site for me to know I was going to love it. It was this smoking hot one of Dino and Hibari in bed, with Dino lying on top of Hibari, their hands loosely wrapped around each other, and the lines of it and the use of color and Dino's tattoos was so hot. And then there was a lot of Hibari being wrapped up in Dino's whip to be pulled close or Hibari looking amazingly hot in b&w sketches or Dino with Hibird perched on his finger and it's a style of art that reminds me strongly of canon and yet still has something of its own, something a little rougher, the blend just perfect for a pairing like this one. Despite that there's not really a ton of art here, I loved the Dino/Hibari stuff enough to be completely over the moon for it. (Dino/Hibari, some Yamamoto/Gokudera, some gen.)
- Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - Signorina by Lishy - This was a beautiful fic about the possible past of Gokudera and his mother, how they fit into his father's family and how Shamal fit in there as well. The writing is gorgeous, the flow of words and pacing and background details are all brilliant, and it was entirely too easy for me to be able to take this for canon. It fits with the feel of the manga at its more serious points and the harsh tone of the series and the characterization is really quite exquisite. I love what the author did with Gokudera's mom, it feels like such a natural fit with the series. I feel badly writing such a short rec for this fic, because it's really good as far as I can tell and definitely one of those that deserves to be read. If there's more in this series, I am going to be so happy. (Implications of Shamal/GokkunMama.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - Blood Flowers on Snow by Lishy - [Note: This is a sequel to Signorina and you may want to read that one first.] I accidentally read this fic first and didn't really have trouble following along, but I do think it works better if you read that one first. It's a really beautifully written piece about Gokudera's childhood and speculation on it and how events might have shaped him into the person he is, little moments that aren't tremendously huge, but still have an impact on him. It's a simple piece, Gokudera is just out of sight as Shamal assisinates someone and you can see how much Shamal really does kind of care about him, but also doesn't coddle him and how much he means to Gokudera and it's just. It's a gorgeous, gorgeous piece of writing. The ending is beautiful. ♥ (Implications of Shamal/GokkunMama.) - Kateyou Hitman REBORN! - Twelve by kiyoshi_mitarai - You know what one of the most awesome things about the REBORN! fandom is? Nobody seems to care who ships what, everyone's pretty laidback. I'm still marvelling at this. And because of this attitude, I'm willing to click on links to pairings I might not have ever read before and then I get awesome fics like this. It's twelve shorts scenes with Ryohei and Gokudera, never once letting up on how they fight and beat each other up and are extremely gay while doing so. The author made me smile or laugh several times during this fic, she painted these great little scenes, and asd;lfkjaslkdjalkjs made Ryohei/Gokudera work as a pairing. It'd be so great in this author's hands, I totally want more of it after this. XDDDDDb (Ryohei/Gokudera.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - untitled by kiyoshi_mitarai - I felt like the voice for Ryohei was a little off in this fic (along with the switching povs), but I kept reading anyway because Ryohei and Yamamoto! When was I going to find that pairing again? It's an interesting look at the two of them on a job together at some point in the future, mostly just a quiet moment in between running from their opponents, but it works well, it highlights a lot about who they are and how they work together as Vongola, the surprisingly easy dynamic between Ryohei and Yamamoto felt very right to me here. Also, there are a couple of short ficlets after the main one, including a very nice Ryohei/Hibari piece with a nice kiss. (Ryohei/Yamamoto in the main fic, Ryohei/Hibari in the extra ficlet at the end.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - Dollhouse by piecrumbs - This is an incredible Bel piece, the sense of something very much like whimsy, almost sort of like a fairytale gone bad, everything that Bel was in the manga is here in the fic. It's set from Bel's perspective, which isn't always an easy thing to do, especially to get across the almost childlike sense of playfulness and yet the violent murderer that he is, both at the same time, never breaking stride with it. The way things almost sort of roll right off of Bel, even as it must be utter chaos and trauma around him, the way everything still feels light and cheerful and like a playtime adventure with a child... it's beautifully written and really kinda creepy. Excellent for Bel. (No real warnings/pairings, aside from the ones you'll always get with Bel.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - Dinner conversation by vermultitude - I love this fandom and it's penchant for taking two characters who don't interact that much and weaving something breathtaking out of it. Dino and Mukuro aren't two characters that I would have put together in the same room (unless Hibari was involved, but that's just my retarded brain ♥), much less have woven something as gorgeous as this out of it. But somehow... the way the author writes it, it has this natural flow and grace, it just makes perfect sense as the story moves along. I could hardly get up from my chair as I read this, read Dino trying to understand what makes Mukuro tick and how to get him to respond, frustrated by the lack of response from him. Mukuro is brilliantly written here, all insincere smiles and mysterious motivations and playing seeming to be playing a game that no one but he is aware of, while Dino smiles and isn't sure if he's making headway or not. The characterization of them both, the language of the piece itself, all of this is just. Gorgeous. Now, I'm kind of fascinated by the idea. (Dino/Mukuro, except it could really be gen.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - untitled by vermultitude - This is just sort of a quiet, not quite introspective piece about Dino, who thinks about Mukuro and then about Squalo, and it's not so much that he makes much progress as it's an insightful look on these characters, the world that the manga has built in the background that we don't always get much more than flashing glimpses of. The writing is lovely here as well and I kinda continue to be interested in Dino's take on Mukuro especially, for all that the focus of this is slightly more on the Dino/Squalo parts. (Maybe some implications of Dino/Mukuro and Dino/Squalo, but it's really just gen.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - cadence by vermultitude - ....a-apparently, I'm going to go through all of the author's fic at this rate. (Ah, well. They're all worth reading, so.) I had to smile at the very beginning of this fic, so early into Dino's training with Reborn, when he was still such a klutz, and I knew I'd probably like this fic from that moment on. It's an interesting look at Shamal especially, the way he's so often in the background of helping guide these mafia kids onto the right path (as much as one can say that) and there's a real sort of roughness to the character that works well here. (Shamal/Dino.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - untitled by kiyoshi_mitarai - I have this thing for the idea of Lambo/I-Pin and this was a cute little fic that fit well with how I think they would be in their sweeter moments. Of course they'd both still be total idiots at other times and still fight as well, but... there would be softer, cuter moments were, oh, hey, this person isn't so stupid, I guess. And the fic got that across, the sweetness of a cute boy and girl maybe discovering each other in a new, just a little. Adorableness. (Lambo/I-Pin.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - dandelion seeds by vermultitude - This is a really beautiful look at Chrome's character, there's something almost surreal or maybe dreamy about her here, something that just sort of floats along or doesn't quite seem to understand or care about the world around her, except that's not right either. But it's a certain something that I felt in the original manga as well, and the imagery the author uses, the pretty use of words and turns of phrase are lovely to read about her here. (No real warnings/pairings, maybe some potential Mukuro/Chrome, but.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - untitled by kiyoshi_mitarai - One of the downsides to getting involved with WJ fandoms (among the many, many upsides) is that there's often times a lack of attention paid to sibling relationships that are intriguing, but get overshadowed by pairings. (Not that I blame fandom.) So it's nice to see a fic that spends so much time not just on Ryohei's character, but also the dynamic between him and Kyouko, especially when it's so adorablely sweet and spot on. I really like the way the author writes Ryohei here, both how much he cares about other people and how TO THE EXTREME his character can be (without overdoing it, because that's not all there is to Ryohei, he's not entirely a caricature). A very nice little series of ficlets. (There's a bit of Ryohei/Hibari at the end, but this is way more gen than anything.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - untitled by actualize and picnicbird - This is a collection of various short little ficlets for the REBORN! characters (focusing often times on Hibari and Mukuro and Dino and Chrome and Lanchia and Xanxus) and the connections between them, whether they're all in the same timeline/universe or all seperate stories that work together to set an overall mood, I don't think it really matters. There is something about this loose set of characters that inspires a vague sort of writing, something that's heavy in imagery and beautifully written violence and smiles that are difficult to read, a style that wouldn't necessarily work for the other characters in this universe, but those that have such a deep history (or are quickly becoming tangled up in all of the history), it works. It's a very satisfying fic because it covers so many moments between these characters, shares so many tiny little insights, and I could hardly look away once I started reading. (I'd call this mostly gen, but you can find implications of several pairings, most notably Mukuro/Hibari, Dino/Hibari, Mukuro/Chrome, and maybe Xanxus/Mukuro.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - KUSO Fairytales 4.0 The Long Haired Princess, Prologue by hehe_05 - While the previous post from the author contained a lot more fanart in it, this one is closer to a more traditional fanfic, with added illustrations put in, so it gets recommended as a fanfic instead. And I love what this author is doing, the illustrations continue to be both adorable and really beautiful to look at, they combined the REBORN! feel and what could have come out of a fairy tale book. There's humor woven into the retelling of Squalo's history, along with a whole lot of adorableness. The really great thing--aside from the characters all being kind of seriously awesome--is the way the author/artist takes the backgrounds of these characters and tells fairy tales out of them. So great. ♥ (Dino/Squalo, Xanxus/Squalo, though you could almost squint at see it as gen.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - sympathy for the devil by kiyoshi_mitarai - This was an interesting look at Mukuro trapped under the water like he was for so long, his attempts at escape, and even a little about his relationship with Tsuna. It's interesting because it's more about sense and feel than it is about a linear storyline, about the kind of place Mukuro is in. I think the author accomplished what she was going for with this, plus it's nice to see more English works focusing on the Tsuna/Mukuro dynamic, especially after Tsuna is so different in the future. (Some Tsuna/Mukuro.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - TO-LE-RA-TE by jiao_chan - When I first started this fic, for a page or so, I wasn't really sure of the narrative voice, it didn't really seem to quite fit the characters. But it was amusing so far and I like Lambo/I-Pin a lot, so I kept reading. Somewhere along the way, I found myself believing this view of the characters and the situation the author creates for the characters is pretty damn hilarious and really easy to see and, you know, of course they all treat Lambo terribly and he only makes it worse for himself and ahahahaha this was fun, the author totally won me over. XDb (Lambo/I-Pin.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - untitled by actualize - This is another amazing Bel piece from this author and it still impresses me how incredibly well this character is written here--those different moods of Bel's, the way they're almost mercurial and one can tip into the other so easily, but there's almost something like... like maybe you could almost understand him, but not quite. The use of an almost childlike view of the world, something that's a bit like an old fairy tale or maybe an old nursery rhyme in everything that Bel does, even when it's horrible and violent, and the way the rest of the Varia react (or don't react as they don't pay much attention to Bel anyway) and Squalo in particular... it's all amazingly done. I-- I could grow to be rather fascinated with this pairing, I suspect. (Some Bel/Squalo, but it's really more gen than anything.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - untitled by actualize - Oh, now this is interesting. I've read some Dino/Mukuro fic before and was thoroughly fascinated by the idea, so that might have made me more likely to be intrigued by this one, but this is also... it's something of an AU, so you're thrown right into the middle of it, but I really like the way it winds up working for that, the way it's just a moment in time, a battle of wills that has a sort of immediacy for being just the one scene (along with a bit of a build-up in the beginning). The interaction between these two is fantastic, I can't imagine it going any other way and this author does an incredible job with both characters, the different ways they both treat people and how they clash against each other and asdlfkjasdlkjsl, damn, that was kind of really hot. ♥ (Dino/Mukuro.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - KUSO Fairytales 4.0 The Long Haired Princess, Story 1 by hehe_05 - Oh, god, as if I weren't enjoying this story enough already, the author goes and puts Dino/Hibari in there? There aren't enough heartmarks in the world for my delight at this particular moment. I mean. The way it's told in the style of a fairy tale, right down to a King of the Birds which is so fantastic, and the illustrations lending to that same fairy tale style, while still being so very REBORN!, continues to be awesome. (And, god, the little chibi comics at the end are so priceless that I could probably only truly convey my delight through a lot of keyboard mashing.) The Dino/Hibari interaction is fantastic here, they are both still very much themselves, still very true to the spirit of their characters, and, um. Dino being forced to tie Hibari down to the bed was... well, maybe not precisely hot (since that wasn't the intention), but it was certainly quite intriguing and I would like to see more of this from the author. Y-yes. Oh, and have I mentioned that I love Hibird? And that the Dino/Hibari comics at the end are the most lolarious thing I've seen all day? Because they ARE, omgggg. XDDDD (Dino/Squalo, Dino/Hibari. Some Mukuro/Tsuna in the end comics.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - Ten Years and Lemon Drops by pollinia - I still have this great fondness for the idea of Lambo and I-Pin, so it delights me to see that others occasionally like the idea as well, especially when it nets me fic as lovely as this one. The writing is very clean and smooth, the pacing is well-done and shows the progression (or lack of) over time, and it's really sweet without forgetting that this is the REBORN! series, so crazy things happen and people beat the crap out of each other and people are sometimes really dumb. The characterization is fantastic and really kinda sweet, which you woudln't think woul work for someone like Lambo, but it does. I love that it's also incredibly bittersweet at times, not forgetting that the future isn't really always that happy of a place, yet not being a depressing fic. I loved this one. ♥ (Lambo/I-Pin.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - forced beginnings by surestsmile - Hm. It's interesting, Ryohei/Hibari isn't a pairing I would have found myself going after at all, just on my own, but I've seen it a handful of times in fandom now and I've been developing something of a fondness for it. And this is an interesting piece, something a bit more serious in nature, but it takes an interesting look at each of them seperately, how they gravitated to the Vongola family and thus came into contact with each other. It feels like the first piece of a larger whole, but it's an interesting bit on its own. (Evental Ryohei/Hibari, I assume?) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - The Story of the Snake, the Bird, and the Rather Stupid but Extremely Nice Small Boy by half_sleeping - There is something about the REBORN! fandom that makes me delight in these sorts of fairy tales, especially when the characters are so spot on, when the author can remain true to who they are. Mukuro as a snake and Hibari as a bird and Tsuna as himself and it's really kind of adorable and, yet still shows why people flock to Tsuna, even when you wouldn't think them the type. The animosity between the snake and the bird is also a lovely touch to the fic and it, too, shows how people who wouldn't otherwise get along at all can find some way to co-exist with Tsuna. Excellent fic! And the ending line is total LOL. ♥ (Mukuro/Tsuna/Hibari, except it's really sort of gen.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - KUSO Fairytales 4.0 The Long Haired Princess, Story 2 by hehe_05 - Oh, god, I love this fic so much so far. Everything I've said about previous chapters is still true about this fic--the fairy tale narrative that retells the characters' stories is so wonderfully done and so charming and you know how things will turn out, but the way the author does it is brilliant. Also, the art continues to be brilliantly done for an illustrated fairy tale-style fanfic, I love it so much. But one of the best things about this chapter, of course, is that it's about Bel, whom fandom has given me such an interest in. He could have been such a stereotypical character and hell if I know what makes him genuinely interesting for me/takes him away from that stereotype, but whatever does... the author does it beautifully in this fic, too. ♥ (Some Xanxus/Squalo in the extra, maybe possibly some other stuff in the fic, but this is QUITE GEN, honestly.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - all eyes on him by surestsmile - You know, part of me still marvels that I'm reading Ryohei/Hibari fic and enjoying it without reservation as much as I do. I ♥ this fandom so hard. And this one was such a delight as well, showing how Hibari most firmly Does Not Work Well With Others and why trying to get him to work with the other Vongola isn't always bad, but doesn't really work out either. And then he's forced to pair up with Ryohei and somehow it's hilariously annoying to Hibari and yet works this time around. I also really liked the author's take on Ryohei, especially as they get older, he's still very EXTREME but there's also an actual brain going on in there. (This is gen, but Ryohei/Hibari fans might enjoy it as well.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - untitled by pumpkinonastick - I was journal hopping again and browsing flists and such, when a fic post with Squalo and Yamamoto caught my eye. I have a great fondness for that pairing, despite that it's not written very often, so I kind of flew on over to this fic. It's two short ficlets that show a moment or two in the relationship between these two, not really a pairing (unless you want to see it that way) and very nicely captures that antagonistic meets helpful clash of personalities they have going on. It certainly got me wanting more for these two. XD (Some potential Yamamoto/Squalo.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - Fit For Kings (prologue) by cerepan - What is it about REBORN! that makes me perfectly willing to read mideval AUs fic for it? It's not something I usually go for, so I'm not sure what's different about this series that makes me okay with it. Intrigued by the idea, even. I suppose it's partly because I'm desperate for fic, but there's still something about these characters and these families that make it interestig. Plus, I like this author a lot and this fic is interesting because it doesn't do what I expected--instead, it mixed things around a little. While the heads of the families are still the heads of their kingdoms here, the dynamics between them aren't the same at all. Byakuran and Mukuro getting along, the way Xanxus and Bianchi are on good terms, and so forth. The spirits of the characters remain the same, which gives it a feeling of... maybe in another lifetime, things could have gone this way. I'm intrigued. (I assume eventual pairings, but for now this is largely gen with some Byakuran/Mukuro.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - untitled by pumpkinonastick - I continue to feel that there is not nearly enough Yamamoto/Squalo in the fandom, so little fics like these go a long way. I actually like the format of them, two little scenes based on a prompt/keyword, just little scenes from their lives, little character moments or interactions that are intriguing. I like the author's take on them, how she doesn't forget that edge of competition there, how these could be gen, or they could potentially be more, it fits well with how I saw them in canon, too. (Some Yamamoto/Squalo that's really entirely gen.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - the end of innocence by surestsmile - One of the things that's interesting about REBORN!'s version of the mafia is that... I'm curious about how Tsuna's family would handle having to kill people, considering the kind of person their boss is and that it's a shounen manga. So, I really liked this author's take on Ryohei's reaction after the first time he's killed someone, how he's not stupid about it, but he's still Ryohei. Even if he's hurting and upset and Hibari intrudes on that, in his own Hibari-like way. The relationship the author is slowly building between these two is so interesting and reminds me of why I like them so much, too. Again. XD (This is purely gen, but Ryohei/Hibari fans should enjoy it, too.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - Spoonful of Sugar by mikken - This was a really adorable little Haru --> Tsuna fic, just a short little piece about how she sees Tsuna and the little fantasies that run through her head. I really liked the contrast between the way she wants to see things and the way things actually are, written in a smooth, clean style. It's very sweet (making the title very appropriate <3) and adorable. Plus, hey, REBORN! het! How often does that happen? XD (One-sided Tsuna/Haru.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - coercive incentives by surestsmile - I continue to like the relationship that's slowly building between Ryohei and Hibari in this author's hands, the way it's not about finding little moments of connection, so much as it is... something else. An antagonism that isn't that important (at least not yet), it's almost more about other people (like Tsuna) at the beginning, but something that still slowly means something. Hibari's direct threats to motivate Ryohei in his own special way is just perfect and it really fits with everything we've seen of their relationship, even ten years into the future. (This is completely gen, but Ryohei/Hibari fans might enjoy it as well.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - building bonds by surestsmile - This is another piece of the Ryohei/Hibari series of fics that continues to build up a tone for their relationship, except this time it's shown more through the eyes of Tsuna instead of theirs. It's really interesting for that, the sense of frustration Tsuna must go through every day having two members like that in his family, the way he sees their relationship (whatever you want to describe it as) coming along, and the little bit of relief when they settle into a routine because at least you can minimize the damage to everywhere else that way. I think that was one of my favorite bits of the delightful little piece--that Tsuna would be glad, even while feeling a little guilty for feeling glad, because at least he could add some extra insulation there. XD (This is gen, but Ryohei/Hibari fans might enjoy it as well.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - KUSO Fairytales 4.0 The Long Haired Princess, Story 3 by hehe_05 - This one is a very short entry in the fairytales series, but it has really lovely art (I'm still utterly charmed by the artist's style, it combines a manga-esque style with a fairytale style so well, it reminds me a lot of the Okami game and its ilk, which I adored so much) and it's still just as cute and fun as ever. Plus, there's a SUPER ADORABLE Dino comic at the end (with both Dino/Squalo and Dino/Hibari) that made me smile. <3 Plus, it's got the LONGCHAMP FAMILY. A++++ for working them in. XDb (Potential implications of pairings in the extras, but not enough to really warn for.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - KUSO Fairytales 4.0 The Long Haired Princess, Story 4 by hehe_05 - I am still rather disgustingly in love with this series of stories because it works in all these different feelings of various fairy tales, yet still stays true to the spirit of the REBORN! universe and I still love love love the art. I love the progression of the Dino/Hibari relationship in this chapter as well, the way Dino slow gets Hibari to trust him, the way there's obviously something going on with Hibari that I'm genuinely anticipatory about finding out, the way the author even manages to work in their fights with each other. But it's also the super-LOL-worthy extra chibi comics at the end which are priceless. I honestly don't know if I liked them or the fic better. XDDDD♥ (Some Dino/Hibari, some Dino/Squalo.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - Hello Darkness, My Old Friend by coomasieblue - You know, I picked this story out at random, I hadn't read REBORN! fic for over a month and I was just starting to go through old posts and I happened to stop on this one, intending just to skim the beginning. I was curious how Mukuro/Gokudera would work out. I wasn't expecting what I got and I'm not sure if I would have read it the same way if I'd known ahead of time how harsh this story was going to be, but I'm really glad I did. I'm not one much for non-con most of the time, but this was a fantastic look at Gokudera's character, not just about breaking him down, but instead showing what kind of core of steel he has underneath everything, that stubborn determination that gets him through life, the something unbreakable that he has, and the unshakable faith he has in the Vongola Tenth. I think that's the real treasure of this fic, that Gokudera might go through hell here, it might even end on a painful note, but this is Gokudera. He doesn't go down that easily. (Mukuro!Tsuna/Gokudera, hard R rating for content, very non-con.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - A Best Friend by xinexpressiblex - I tend to be wary of most het in this fandom, often because I worry that someone will only be shipping it because they don't want to ship the gay and the potential het pairings deserve better than that. But I randomly clicked onto this story anyway and found a genuinely adorable fic that deals really well with the Haru/Tsuna/Kyoko triangle and makes me love all the characters involved so much. Kyoko's happiness when Tsuna finally asks her out, the delicate girliness that I'm so charmed by, Haru's hurt at losing the boy she really, truly likes and trying so hard to be a good friend because she is Kyoko's friend. I really loved her in this fic, she's darling and wonderful and so human. I'm delighted by this author already. (Tsuna/Kyoko, one-sided Haru/Tsuna.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - As Long as the Lights are Off by xinexpressiblex - I'd just finished reading the author's other fic and saw she'd written Gokudera/Kyoko and I was really wondering how that would work. It was short, so I clicked and what I got was a fantastic little piece set in the future after Tsuna's death, about how everything between them was about him instead of them. It was just fucked up enough and beautifully written that I loved it, it hit all the right notes for me. *__* (Gokudera/Kyoko, a very light R for content, implications of Tsuna/Kyoko and Gokudera/Tsuna.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - Holding Hands by xinexpressiblex - And, finally, one last Tsuna/Kyoko fic from this author because I really do adore the cuteness this pairing has to offer and this author does it really well. It's short, not even 300 words this time, but it's a little moment in time where they're simply walking along and Tsuna has trouble believing it's really happening and it's just... just right. Very cute! (Tsuna/Kyoko.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - Normal by benizakura - I have this developing thing for Bel/Squalo, because the potential interaction there is so appealing to me and this fic plays right into that. Bel kinda creeps even Squalo out, there's something off-kilter about him and that, even if just a tiny little bit, unsettles Squalo, too, and makes him want to lash out, which this author did such a lovely job of capturing, this is so much of why the pairing intrigues me. Plus, the ending of this one was A++ fantastic. ♥ (Bel/Squalo.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - Subtle by ephemeralize - Sometimes I click on fics just because they contain a pairing I cannot imagine taking seriously and I want to know what the author did and if they could convince me to love the pairing, too. So, I clicked on this Ryohei/Gokudera fic and asd;lfkjasl;kjaslkj ahahahahaha oh god I laughed through the entire thing. As the author says: There's really only one way to write a Ryohei/Gokudera fic: 1) Think up the most ridiculous scenario possible. 2) Write it down. THAT'S IT. The author's humorous approach--yet still having kept them delightfully in the right spirit--was perfect for this fic and this pairing. Watching Ryohei go around to talk to various people and his reactions to being "gay" and then Gokudera's reactions... as;dfajlskj this is why I love the REBORN! fandom. (Ryohei/Gokudera.) - Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - The Frog and the Crown (part 1) by ej_neko - I swear. What this fandom does to me. Fairy tale AU fics are something I routinely avoid in other fandoms, yet will totally hit up when it comes to the REBORN! fandom. But it gets me fics like this, which I initially read for the Xanxus/Squalo but wound up enjoying for the whole Varia-as-a-kingdom storyline because the author has a great sense of humor about the whole thing. Squalo's characterization (or descriptions of him at least) are hilariously on target and his relationship with Xanxus is even funnier, and I just. I love the whole of the Varia. Plus, the inclusion of Bel (which had me laughing out loud at a couple of points, especially Xanxus' take on the whole thing) was fantastic. I'm totally looking forward to finding part 2 of this. (Some Xanxus/Squalo, it's only half the point.) Katekyou Hitman REBORN!: Get Well Soon by aesher - I have a thing for Squalo/Yamamoto (I'm not really sure why it's so strong, possibly because it tends to be really pretty rare, considering the size of the fandom?), so I usually click on links if I happen to stumble over them and this was a nice, fun little fic that I got out of it. Squalo is appropriately SPAZ SPAZ SPAZ while Yamamoto hardly even seems to really notice and I was kind of impressed with how the author managed to work so much of a cracky, fun atmosphere into the fic while writing from his POV and yet still getting that calm, even keeled attitude he has. Plus, Yamamoto's way of dealing with Squalo is a total *thumbs up*. XD (Squalo/Yamamoto implied?) Katekyou Hitman REBORN!: eyes only for a prince by hitsuuji - I have such a growing fondness for this pairing, so as soon as I see a link to fic for it, I skip on over, whether I recognize the author or not. And fic like this is why I do that--it's an interesting take on Bel's character, working on the theory that he might be blind under all that hair, the way the author shows his world through different kinds of senses, the feel of blood or the sound of Squalo's voice. I like that it's half about their dynamic and half about the way this Bel interprets the world, the way they blend together, because the author really does a great job of that... not precisely whimsical but something close attitude that Bel has. And I really liked her Squalo in this, too! A fun little piece. (Bel/Squalo.) Katekyou Hitman REBORN!: Dare by chiiaroscuro - Okay, if there's one pairing I like anywhere near as much as I like Dino/Hibari, it's Mukuro/Hibari. So. When there was an NC-17 fic with Dino/Hibari/Mukuro? I-- I had to. My one complaint is that the POV kept switching all over the place and especially in a fic with three male characters, it made it sometimes difficult to keep track of what was going on with whom. Other than that? Mmm, nice. It was almost doujin-like with the set-up and the descriptions of the sex and the entire plot, but in the best way possible, because it was really kind of smoking hot. The writing is lovely, Dino's characterization is really spot-on for this kind of fic, and Mukuro is that mysterious sort of devious and dangerous, and Hibari is just-- nnn, I loved the characterization here. And I love that it's never really clear how much is real and how much is illusion (what with Mukuro being involved and all) and the ending is perfect. *__* (Dino/Hibari/Mukuro, NC-17.) Katekyou Hitman REBORN!: Birds of a Feather by Luinael - I originally clicked onto this fic because it was labeled as Hibari/Chrome NC-17 fic and... I'd rate it a light R more than that, personally. But what I got instead of smut (which I was curious about how it would go, hence the clicking... as well as the idea of the pairing intrigues me) was this really beautiful little story with a really amazing Chrome point of view. There's so much going on and it's not that she's flat or unresponsive, it's just that there's a certain... passive quality to the fic that fits Chrome's character so well, because it's still very much the way I imagine Chrome sees the world. The characterizations, the way Chrome sees both Mukuro and Hibari, the way the shades of the Mukuro/Hibari relationship are worked in, all of it is wrapped up in lovely words and really pretty metaphors. (Hibari/Chrome, not quite safe for work.)
