Star Trek XI: Goodly Creatures Are There Here by Mara - [Note: There are spoilers for the movie both in the fic and this rec.] One of the things that I found most interesting about ST:2009 was Spock Prime's role in things and this short little fic captures so much of his character in this movie at the end. It touched on everything I felt about him in that universe, hit on his loneliness and yet hope for the future and it was just. Really a perfect little coda to the movie. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: Together, Yet by calicokat - [Note: There are spoilers for the movie both in the fic and this rec.] You know, I never shipped Kirk/Spock and I still don't, but... this was kind of perfect. It skirted the edge of purely gen and maybe something more, something that could have just been friendship, but wasn't just that at all. But what was really breathtaking about this fic was the dual narration of that mind meld--everything Spock Prime was going through, after the lost of Vulcan, after the loss of his world, seeing a young James Kirk so alive here, then Kirk's side of things, how someone finally believes in him and there's something that could almost anchor him in the way Spock is so connected to him--and all the depth of their relationship, despite that it was the first time they'd technically met. It does a gorgeous take on that moment and gives it even more depth and I feel like this is what I want more of, what the movie didn't give me nearly enough of. That emotional depth of something beyond romance or UST or friendship. (Sort of Kirk/Spock Prime, but I'd call it gen more than anything.)

Star Trek XI: The Helmsman by imadra_blue - [Note: Just assume there are spoilers in the fic and the rec.] You know, I never really connected with Sulu's character in the movie, but I didn't have a lot of problems with him, either. He was just sort of... there, despite my affection for John Cho. So this fic is one that attempts to flesh out his character and I think... it makes me that much more curious about the character and what he's like in this version, especially since this fic does such a great job of putting all these little details into him. I love that he's not traditionally Japanese, that there are some influences there, but there's more disconnect than there is a connection. I love that he apparently favors Spanish food and I love his reasons for becoming a pilot and I loved his conversation with Spock Prime and I love the contrast against TOS' Sulu and the way all of that wove together. Very nice. (Some implications of canon pairings, but this is primarily gen.)

Star Trek XI: Earth Kids Are Assholes by vampychick - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in this fic and this rec.] Okay, I guess I'm going to be calling it Star Trek XI, despite that I'm not sure how that's going to work out when there are new movies in this new AU. But! Anyway. I was sort of wary of reading this fic because it's an AU of an AU, I already had an AU with the movie itself, so what was the point? But I gave it a shot anyway and as;ldkfjalskjalksj oh my god this is what I have been waiting for. It does a brilliant job of bridging the spirit of the original (and the Kirk/Spock friendship) with the new characterizations, just by setting it in their childhood and Kirk and Spock meeting early. It's a brilliant friendship between them and the Spock narration is fantastic and it has some truly great lines in it. as;ldkfjasl;kj goddammit now I'm going to be all over this fandom, aren't I? (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: Precious Things by haearnmouse - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in this fic and this rec.] Vulcan has, like a lot of Star Trek fans, always been one of my favorite alien races/cultures, so seeing it destroyed in the movie was kind of heartbreaking, even as much as I knew it would allow for more focus on them. Then along comes a fic like this, such a simple idea, set on characters that aren't the main focus at all, about all the other people affected by Vulcan's destruction and what it means for everyone... it was beautifully done. The characters are beautifully drawn even in just a few scenes and the imagery is just understated enough to be all the more powerful for it and... I have to admit. I came a little close to tearing up at the end there. This was an amazing fic. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: Weight of the World by schweinsty - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in this fic and this rec.] I really liked this look at Kirk post-movie, after there's a bit of time to settle in to his new position and responsibilities, time to actually start thinking about everything that he's now responsible for. I like how it eats away at him at night, not enough to keep him from functioning, but slowly wearing him down, even if it won't be forever. I really like the friendship between Kirk and McCoy here, it stays nicely true to the originals, but is very much the STXI versions of the characters. Just a very nice little addition to the movie. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: untitled by damalur - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in this fic and this rec.] Oh, man, this was such a great Bones fic, it really nailed the blend between the original McCoy and the movie's McCoy and made it fun. I love the working in of little details and touches, McCoy's family and the use of actual paper to write a letter on and then Kirk stumbling through and their friendship is perfectly pitched here and just. It's a really great Bones voice and so easy to see. <3 (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: untitled by damalur - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in this fic and this rec.] This is another great McCoy voice and it's even better that he has a (brief) conversation with Spock here and it's just. The way Bones looks at the rest of this crew, who are all so young and he's so bone-weary tired after all that's happened, it fits brilliantly with his character. The conversation with Spock is pitch-perfect as well, it's funny in the right places and bittersweet in the other right places. A really excellent read. (No real warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: Domains by notexotic - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in this fic and this rec.] One of the things that was most interesting for me about the movie was the potential for new Vulcan/Romulan interaction, which this fic starts to play with in a really intriguing way. The Federation - Romulan Star Empire interaction is going to be super interesting from now on, both for all the new revelations and connections already made and for the future ones, knowing what they do about what's coming. I really liked this portrayal of the Romulans, so harsh and distant but not quite the same as before, and I really loved Spock's reactions. The emotions just under the surface and everything not said, the way his relationship with Uhura played nicely into that, I could see it really well here. (Half gen, half Spock/Uhura.)

Star Trek XI: House Rules by taraljc - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] You know, I wouldn't have thought Gaila (the Orion girl who was Uhura's roommate in the movie) would have gotten much fic, but this short thing was very cute and fun. It's the charming back and forth rules set up by two roommates, showing little bits of both Gaila and Uhura's personalities in the movie and just being. Well, fun. XD (No real warnings/pairings, aside from brief Gaila/Kirk.)

Star Trek XI: Learning to Fly by penknife - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] One of the few things I felt was done interestingly and pretty well in the movie was the different take on Jim Kirk's character, which this fic follows up on really brilliantly. It's parallel scenes, each from an equivalent moment in the different versions' lives, one from Kirk Prime, one from the AU Kirk. The writing is almost understated but that makes it all the more beautiful to read, the characterization and pacing and everything are really tight, I was drawn into the character all over again. Kirk has never been my favorite character, but fic like this reminds me that I find him fascinating and I could find him to be my favorite character. I love how on target both versions feel, how you can see both see him in both universes, how they're both Kirk and yet things are so very different, too. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: How to Avoid Kicking Puppies and Other Valuable Lessons in Leadership by sparky77 - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] So, like pretty much everyone else reading fic in this fandom, this is one of the first fics I stumbled over, but it wasn't until this morning that I sat down to properly read it and just. a sdl;kfjasl;kj oh my god. This is what I wanted out of fandom! It has great voices for the characters, but especially Kirk as the central figure, getting his movie characterization down brilliantly. The beautiful thing about this fic is that it's LOL-worthy funny without having to resort to being straight up parody, you can see these things happening on the ship, it fits with the movie and really makes me love them as characters. But mostly it's just that it's brilliantly funny as;dlkfjasl;j omfg. I cannot even pick a favorite scene, all the interaction is too perfect. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: Bragging Rights by imadra_blue - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] One of the things that attracted me to this fic is that I have a long-standing fondness for interaction between the three characters of Uhura, Sulu, and Chekov (which the TOS novels gave me) and so I was curious to see how Sulu and Uhura would play off each other here. It's very cute and it fits well with the movie, but I think what I like the most about the fic is the blend of cultures that makes up Sulu's character here, the little bits from different Earth cultures, the other alien races that might have gone into him, all centered around him playing with the balance of his sword. Very nice. (This is mostly gen, but Spock/Uhura implied.)

Star Trek XI: Chaotic Systems by eponymous_rose - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] More McCoy fic! And it's a couple of scenes set between the end of the universe-saving adventure they just had and whatever adventures you know are going to be waiting for them afterwards, where McCoy isn't so thrilled about staying with the Enterprise, but a surprise encounter might change his mind. And I really like this idea, it slides neatly into the canon as we saw it and it's a great moment of connection between characters and it's one of those things I really wish had made it into the movie itself. It made all kinds of sense to me and had some really nice character voices, this was a great read. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: Absolution by chaletian - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] Oh. I hadn't even thought of a fic like this. It's such a simple, short thing--the summary reads as Chekov is avoiding Spock; Spock thinks he knows why.--and the writing is almost understated, but that makes it all the more lovely a read. The ending was really spot on and it fit so neatly together with the canon of the movie, made so much sense that I choose to firmly believe this scene totally happened. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: So Many Different Suns by inlovewithnight - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] Oh, man, this was a great look at Chekov's character in the movie. It combines so many elements--an interesting fleshing out of this character, an interesting look at the beginnings of the fallout of everything after the movie, an interesting look at Pike's character post-movie events as well--all blended together in this really amazingly written piece. I love what this author does with the characters, it's so easy to feel connected to them, all while keeping a sense of humor, and fitting with the movie. It's already fuzzy in my head, trying to seperate this out from the actual canon, just a little. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: It Takes A Village by chaletian - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] This was actually the first fic I read after taking a break from reading fic for awhile and it was just... it was kind of perfect for sucking me back in. It was a short series of scenes from McCoy's point of view about life on a starship, especially one just getting settled with a new crew, and it is fabulous. The voice for the character is pitch-perfect and made me fall in love with him all over again, but it's the little details of this, the way it fits with the moviverse and the way some of them are so damn funny that really made me fall in love. I could read this kind of fic forever. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: Apron-strings by chaletian - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] And this time (well, as long as I was reading fic, I might as well see what else the author has :D :D :D) this is an interesting take on Winona Kirk. It fits well with what little we saw in the actual movie and what I really liked about it is the sense of... you understand that it's not a picture-perfect family life, but you feel connected to the characters and there's a lot of emotion under the surface that the author brings out nicely. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: Birds Do It, Bees Do It, Even Post-Pubescent Russians Do It by chaletian - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] Oh, god, I don't think I stopped grinning so hard my face hurt for the entire fic. It's got some brilliant voices for the characters, especially the Kirk pov narrative, and it's hilarious, but also... it makes me like these characters as people all over again. I love that Kirk feels kind of out of his depth here, that there are some responsibilities as captain that he's just doesn't have down quite yet, but he's working on it. And just. a;sldkjfa;lksj oh my god my heart wants to burst from being filled with love for pretty much everyone and everything by the end of this fic. ♥ (No real warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: When They Have to Take You In by vampychick - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in this fic and this rec. Also, this is a sequel to a previous fic, which you need to read first to understand this one.] I loved the original fic this one is a sequel to, so I was delighted to see this pop up. It's got the same tone that the previous fic had, this really lovely quality that fits with the movie so well, this time a post-movie scene that folds the original AU together with the events of the movie and it's just. Spock, grieving, but still with the blank surface and Kirk comes along and there's this connection and all this stuff that's unsaid but still perfectly clear and it's. It's emotional without being heavy-handed and I really, really liked this. This is exactly what I want from fandom. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: A Formal Dance in the Bowling Alley by loneraven - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] More than anything, what I really want out of this fandom is genfic that makes me explode with love for the cast, which this fic does really beautifully. I love each of these scenes, I love them for setting them from Kirk's point of view and doing a beautiful job of his character, but I also love them for how much fun they are, how much personality shines through with each of them, yet all of them felt on target to me. I love the... humanization of all of them and how they are slowly coming together as a team. <3 (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: unlikely friends by shinealightonme - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] As I've mentioned a bunch of times, I have a great fondness for the trio of Sulu/Chekov/Uhuru that the old TOS novels gave me in my fannish formative years and thus I have a difficult time adjusting to their movie dynamics. I really liked this fic because it accomplished two things for me--being adorable as all get out, being genuinely funny. And then helping to bridge my feelings on TOS with the new characterizations for these characters, since this fit with the movie really well. I'm slightly more mollified now. ♥ (Background Spock/Uhura, but it's not really the point.)

Star Trek XI: The Fistbump is Non-Optional by mekosuchinae - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] I have a weakness for genfic from this fandom. It is all I want in all of the land, just crazy gen antics with people being friends. That and Chris Pine's Kirk, because I love him with an intensity that is ridiculous. And this fic does a really, really great job of being a little bit in love with Kirk and totally mocking him at the same time, does a great job clearly being in love with this cast. Kirk's narrative, the situation where Spock and McCoy and Kirk are trapped in an alien jail, and the A+++ humor just. All blends together beautifully. I dare you not to laugh while reading this. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: Faites Vos Jeux // Rien Ne Va Plus by chaletian - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec. Also, this is a sequel to two previous fics, it would probably help to have read those first.] As soon as I got to this line: Although practically every one on Enterprise is endlessly fascinated with Spock (chiefly, in Suluís opinion, because of the unusually high possibility that he will go postal on them, compared to most Vulcans) I knew I was going to totally love this fic. And, how I did! It's a great little concept--the various betting pools floating around the Enterprise--which is both funny and gives a great connection to these characters as actual people. I love that Sulu and Chekov wind up being the ship's bookies and, oh, how I laughed at the third and fourth ones of this. <3 (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: Search and Rescue by _seven_crows - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] Have I mentioned in the last five minutes that all I really and truly want out of this fandom ever is genfic? Because I dooooo. And this fic is a great little thing that's written in a very straightforward way so that it just sails right along and it's all about the h/c and the great banter between McCoy and Spock as they save Kirk's life and it's got just enough of a feel from TOS and yet is clearly movieverse that it's fun. The second half of the fic is especially good, the final scene was kind of wonderfully perfect and I seriously, seriously want MOAR PLOTFIC and MOAR SPOCK AND MCCOY OKAY FANDOM? ♥ (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: Murphy's Law of Jim Kirk Diplomacy by _seven_crows - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] Eeeee, more genfic with the Big Three trio! Bonding and sarcasm and h/c and it's all just really, really good. The characterization and dialogue are both delightful to read and nicely in character, it was easy to see this unfolding in my mind's eye, and even more than all of that it was totally satisfying. The three of them trapped in a shuttle in space after a diplomatic mission gone wrong, talking to pass the time, worrying about Kirk being wounded to pass the time, it's all fabulous. I love the way the author balanced revealing bits and pieces of the characters' histories with the connections they were just starting to form with each other with being genuinely amusing on their own. And then, if the author didn't love me enough already, a fabulous ending scene with a cameo from Nurse Chapel. YES. ♥ (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: a fucking space opera (or Six Characters Who Didn't Board the USS Enterprise) by oxoniensis - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] Well. I hadn't given thought to the crossover potential there is in the new movie, but then this fic came along--the concept obvious from the title, of course--and it was fabulous. Five delightful characters that could have joined the Enterprise crew to make it even more of a circus that it already was and what I love about this is the author's talent for each of these. They were wonderfully complete as they were, each of them totally satisfying, but I could also have totally seen each of them fleshed out. I would especially read that Star Trek/Terminator crossover like you wouldn't believe. But also Kirk's voice in this one was great, the little details that make up the hassle of his day to day life and the last section. asdl;fkjasl;jk of course. Just. I don't think I stopped grinning the entire way. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: A New Day by kodiak bear - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] Oh, man. No matter how many times I cycle through fandoms, it's always the same when I find a new fandom that actually has plotfic in it. That rush of something exhilariating and gleeful to find fic like this, where it's mainly about the characterization, but interesting stuff actually happens around that. And one of my favorite, favorite things is Kirk fic, where he's just learning to be a captain and there are going to be a lot of bumps along the way. I love this author's version of his first mission as captain, I love that it's not a happy one, that people die during it and there's no easy answer when something of nightmares happens. I love the characterization, I love all the little moments (the mindmeld being one of my favorite bits, but also the background of the colony and what happened there), and just how this... fits. as;dlkfjalskj christ, this is a terrible rec. But this is easily one of my favorite plotfics in the fandom yet. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: Being CMO by cafe_latte - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] I have yet to tire of fic like this, with a really strong McCoy voice and characterization. Sure, it's nice to get mentions of the alien planets they visit and Kirk being, well, Kirk and mentions of Yeoman Rand and Nurse Chapel, but it's the characterization of McCoy as he settles into being CMO and all the new worries and heavy burdens that comes with, especially with a captain like Kirk. It's not long, but it's very satisfying. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: Paradise Found by skywaterblue - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] Gaila is one of those characters that could have gone either way in fandom, she could have been a non-entity or she could have been obnoxious, but somehow... fandom kind of fell a little in love with her and I'm delighted that they did. Because it produces really charming fics like this one, which is a great character study of a young Gaila just having come to the Federation and adjusting to everything here. I love the fish out of water feel to it, I love all the little details worked into the background, I love the mentions of all the various other alien races, all of this came together really well and made me love Gaila all over again. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: A little knowledge is a dangerous thing by hjpatience - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] This was another interesting look at Kirk's character, getting used to being the captain of a ship and this whole sense of the team that is the crew that shapes up really nicely in the fic. I really love the look at Kirk's character, all the things he knows and "doesn't" know, which show some great insights into his character, yet still keep him firmly grounded in his being... well Jim Kirk. I love all the little touches of the various crew members in the background, too. It'll be a long time before I get tired of reading fic like this. ♥ (Some background het, but it was on the level of the movie itself.)

Star Trek XI: untitled? by nextian - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in this fic and this rec.] Oh, this was a great Sulu ficlet, it had a great voice for him and I love the energy of it, I love the sheer amount of crazy shit that surrounds them that you know they get up to every week. I also love Spock's couple of lines of dialogue in this, I love Kirk in the background, I just love the whole damn thing, I grinned so hard at it. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: This Story Is Not Humorous by chaletian - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers for the movie in the fic and this rec.] Oh, I feel like I could read this fic series forever. This fic is all about the in-jokes you find on any give ship like this, which in and of itself is fun and delightful to read, but it also uses the opportunity to do a couple of other things. It touches on Spock's understanding/lack of understanding about the humans around him, it touches on this new crew establishing themselves and making connections, while still staying connected to the spirit of the original crew. And it's just. A damn fun read. ♥ (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: The Sixth-Day Flower Child by Renata - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers for the movie in the fic and this rec.] I have this thing. To the point it may be kind of a sickness. And yet I completely do not care because I spent the entire time I read this fic supressing the urge to wriggle around with joy. Kidlet Spock. It is so adorable and delightful and precious and full of squee-inducing that I want to explode with love. It's perfect, it doesn't take too long getting into it, it just gets right to the good stuff and it does a lovely job keeping the feel/spirit of the movie and hitting that need I have for fic like this. Kidlet Spock fic. It makes me happy in my soul. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: You Can Choose Your Friends by chaletian - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers for the movie in the fic and this rec.] I continue to be utterly delighted at how many different themes this author can put into this ficverse--this time it's about big, happy families and the fueds that naturally get started up when you have a large crew like this. I love all the little scenes, I love that they're just snippets of a day in the life sort, but that they all contribute to a greater whole. And also that final scene was ace, I could just see it happening without even having to try. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: Telenovela by chaletian - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers for the movie in the fic and this rec.] And this time it's a telenovela that's the theme of this fic and just. Checkov's imagined dramas happening all around him, the scenarios he thinks up, the little details he (and the author) puts into them, it's all hilarious and there are at least two points where I had to grin like a maniac. She's got a great voice for this narrative and I love her style of small, short scenes, it makes the fic fly by and feel utterly perfect and complete the way it is. I hope she writes these forever. (Some potential pairings, but none of them are the point.)

Star Trek XI: Stress Relief by jain - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers for the movie in the fic and this rec.] I'm sort of on the fence about Kirk/Uhura in the new movieverse, but I still have a lingering fondness for the idea based on TOS, so I decided to give this one a shot. It did a couple of things for me that I really liked--it showed that Kirk actually does have a depth that too few people notice, that it's a nice, quiet scene between him and Uhura that's not about sex, but about human connection, which is what I really wanted. She's nervous about an upcoming performance review and it fit well with the movie characters and didn't try too hard, which won me over all the more. (This is fairly gen, but if you like Kirk/Uhura, you should like this.)

Star Trek XI: You're Gonna Make It After All by igrockspock - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers for the movie in the fic and this rec.] Gaila is one of those characters that still kind of takes me by surprise because I don't expect these amazing fics on her. Yet I keep clicking on fics for her because I find her to be a fun, interesting character and it's fics like this that are why. This does an amazing job of showing Gaila's integration into Earth's society and how difficult that is for an Orion woman, giving her depth and real emotions and a fantastic backstory that fits with her character so well. I loved her attempts to understand human ways, not just follow the letter of the law, but to actually understand the spirit of it, I love her determination, I love her openness, I love her blossoming friendship with Uhura, I love how sex is such a part of her character, but there's so much more there, too. I love her relationship with Spock as well, which I wouldn't have thought would work as well as it did, but it came off perfect. I love that this is a fic just plain old worth reading, never mind that it's a fantastic take on Gaila's character. (No real pairings, maybe not quite SFW, though.)

Star Trek XI: To The Enterprise: of Warp Barriers, Captains, and Other Scary Things by karanguni - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] As much as I'm usually into the fandom for other characters (usually Kirk), that's not why I read this fic. Everyone else is just sort of background players that are only there to set the stage for the real attraction to this fic: Scotty and Chekov nerding it up over math and engineering. And I adored it for that, I love it being set through Chekov's narrative and the author did a great job capturing his voice and capturing Scotty's voice and the craziness of the situations they get themselves into and their mutual love for the engines and just. a;sldjfalskj oh man I kind of do want to read cast antics like this forever. ♥ (No real warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: Astrophobes Anonymous by chaletian - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] I feel like the concept of "McCoy is afraid of going into space, so he starts a club" shouldn't work very well, and yet. I couldn't stop smiling my way through this fic, because it's charming and not too over the top and it achieves exactly what it's aiming for--a bit of slice of life mixed with a bit of humor and just a dash of sadness to keep it from being too fluffy. It was a nice little gem all the way around. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: In Service by Raven - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] I continue to love that authors sometimes write character match ups that I wouldn't really give much thought to--like McCoy and Scotty, off on a series of missions to various planets--and then write these breathtaking stories about them. The writing is gorgeous, it weaves together a really interesting story in the various worlds they visit together with some really beautiful character insights to both of them. I love the way both Scotty and McCoy just sort of let each other be, rough edges and all, I love McCoy's point of view in this, and I love how... vast this author's background world seems. The different planets they visit, the little details, the little touches that make each of them come alive, it's beautifully done. It's one of those must-read fics from the fandom for me. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: The Enterprise Laundry Room by chaletian - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] I love slice of life fics, I love the exploring of different points of view on the characters, I love the little details that you wouldn't normally think of on an epic ship like the Enterprise, I love the sense of how human all of this is. I love that this is a piece about the laundry room set through an OC's eyes, I love that it just made me smile the whole way through. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: When I Was Invincible by robanybody - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] Oh, my, how could I resist this fic? Kirk is accidentally teleported into Spock Prime's universe and antics are had. Of course I was going to read it! And it was delightfully fun, seeing the XI version of Kirk interacting with the original series characters, how they're similar, but you can really feel the differences, and it's just. It's so hilarious and I love the sense of... even the ship is familiar but not quite the same to Kirk. I love that the fic covered pretty much all of the main characters and Kirk's interaction with them, I love that it just sailed right along, and asl;dkfjaslkj oh man. TOS Spock and XI Kirk interaction. It was so grand. (No warnings/pairings.)

Star Trek XI: tushah nash-veh k'du by medie - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] This is a short piece set from Gaila's point of view, which I continue to be surprised by (the amount of Gaila fics in the fandom that are actually really interesting to read, that is) and it doesn't have to be long to get it's point across. It's just a moment of two people from different species, an Orion girl in Starfleet and a Vulcan in Starfleet, waiting to be rescued and trying to cope with the loss of Vulcan. Poignant and bittersweet, very nicely done. (No warnings/pairings.)
