Star Trek XI: Together, Yet by calicokat - [Note: There are spoilers for the movie both in the fic and this rec.] You know, I never shipped Kirk/Spock and I still don't, but... this was kind of perfect. It skirted the edge of purely gen and maybe something more, something that could have just been friendship, but wasn't just that at all. But what was really breathtaking about this fic was the dual narration of that mind meld--everything Spock Prime was going through, after the lost of Vulcan, after the loss of his world, seeing a young James Kirk so alive here, then Kirk's side of things, how someone finally believes in him and there's something that could almost anchor him in the way Spock is so connected to him--and all the depth of their relationship, despite that it was the first time they'd technically met. It does a gorgeous take on that moment and gives it even more depth and I feel like this is what I want more of, what the movie didn't give me nearly enough of. That emotional depth of something beyond romance or UST or friendship. (Sort of Kirk/Spock Prime, but I'd call it gen more than anything.)

Star Trek XI: A little differently by mozart - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in this fic and this rec.] I don't normally go for the Kirk/Spock fic, even in this new movie where I could see it more easily than I could before, but I read this fic as skirting just enough of a gen line (even though it's more clear cut pre-slash) and just vague enough that it was about the emotional connection between Spock and Kirk more than anything. And it's a lovely piece of writing, set from the point of view of Spock Prime as he watches this new universe unfolding and new chances for himself and Kirk. And, weirdly, I think I like it as standing on its own rather than as a prologue. <3 (Sort of Kirk/Spock implied.)

Star Trek XI: We Learn Each Other Slowly by raphaela667 - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in this fic and this rec.] Oh, christ, you guys. I don't even ship Kirk/Spock, so why the hell am I reading fic for them? Except this fic kind of has an awesome Kirk voice and I can really see this movie's characterization in them and it has this sort of... it's almost that they're forced into this relationship because it's what they were destined for, except it's not really that, they genuinely care about each other and you can see the foundation of why the relationship works, woven together with their new characterizations and just. Ugh. I love this Kirk so much it's ridiculous. He's this brash young guy who isn't always sure what he's doing, but he's really trying for the first time, both as a captain and in a relationship and just. I love that their relationship isn't smooth, that there are going to be all these bumps and potholes along the road. This fic... I could actually see their (romantic) relationship this way, which was kind of a huge step for me. (Kirk/Spock, implied Spock/Uhura, somewhere between PG13 and R for one scene.)

Star Trek XI: Just Lie Back and Think of the Federation by ifyouweremine - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] a;lsdkfjasl;kjs I have this sort of love/wary relationship with the idea of fuck-or-die scenariors. I like the idea, but rarely are they done well. But I was curious about this one and usually when something has five pages of comments, there's probably something to it. And I think I was crying by the end of it, I was laughing so hard. It's a really great balance between porn for porn's sake and having its tongue firmly in cheek, being borderline parody of the cliche. The author has a really great Spock voice and there are at least three moments where I totally just about choked at his lines and, well. The ending was beautiful. Beautiful. The author really made this fic work. (Kirk/Spock, NC-17.)

Star Trek XI: and they won't believe you when you write home about it by raphaela667 - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] So, as much as what my heart wants really being gen gen gen, I will read Kirk/Spock fic because I can ship them in the new incarnation and also I get fics like this. Fics where I don't think the huge grin left my face the entire time and I loved the spot-on characterization and the author's notes that put me in just the right headspace for the fic. I love, love, love that Sulu is totally not the ship's resident gossip, I love the narrative voice for him in this fic, and just. That final scene. Beautiful. I loved all of this and this is the reason why I'll ship this pairing, especially if it's an established relationship fic. (Kirk/Spock.)

Star Trek XI: The Four Times Spock Said Yes to Jim Kirk and the One Time He Said No by snowlight - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] Pretty much every time I swear to myself that I'm getting off the pairings and going back to genfic, I find another fic like this. One that's beautifully written and does a lovely job with the pairing, both for the characterization and for the sheer emotion it brought out in me while I was reading. I love how much is said without being said in these five various scenes where Spock says "yes" to Kirk (and not necessarily in the way I expected) and how many little details were woven in, how much they care and what matters to them. It sounds like a simple thing, but it was done with amazing deftness and ended on an breathtaking note. (Kirk/Spock.)

Star Trek XI: Stars Apart, Shine the Same by Sineala - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] Jesus, I should have been in bed hours ago, but I cannot stop reading fic. Long-ish fic even! Over 8,000 words! But it was gorgeously written fic and it does a really beautiful job of blending the original series and the new movie together, overlaps them in a way that works for this fic and brings up some really intriguing possibilities of what the mindmeld might have done to Kirk. I really liked Kirk's POV in this fic as well, it did a terrific job of capturing the feel of his character in the movie, I loved seeing his reactions to all of what was happening around him and strain it was putting on him, both in trying to figure things out and in getting caught up in all of it sometimes, it felt spot on with this version. Yet it's really tied to TOS and the events that took place in the original time line, and there was even a hint of plot going on around them and just... everything was balanced really well. Everything was done the way it needed to be, it was a really interesting way to pull him and Spock into a relationship. (Kirk/Spock, NC-17 in a scene or two.)

Star Trek XI: The Peanut Butter and the Jelly by Renata Lord - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in this fic and this rec.] I picked up the link for this fic from mklutz's rec post and just had to snatch it up for my own rec, too. It's five times Spock didn't get an earth-based saying and some of them are just... they really kind of shouldn't work, but somehow they did and I wound up laughing throughout the scene. Very cute and fun. ♥ (Kirk/Spock.)

Star Trek XI: untitled by Meg - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers for the movie in the fic and this rec.] So, Meg has this idea for a series of fics (that I am shamelessly encouraging because my heart beats as one with her) where one character drops the l-bomb and things pretty well go pear-shaped from there. It makes me happy. Especially when reading it for Spock and Kirk and just. Yeah, kind of bawling after this. (Kirk/Spock.)

Star Trek XI: Five Times James T. Kirk Didn't Get Married (And One Time He Did) by raphaela667 - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers for the movie in the fic and this rec.] Wow, I could not put this fic down the entire time I was reading it. I was intrigued by the title, because I'm turning into a total Kirk fangirl (well, I say that like I wasn't already there a long time ago) and I wanted to see how various almost marriages of his played out. Which was entertaining in this fic, the various times he nearly got sucked into marrying someone and how it's just how Jim Kirk's life goes and it was kind of hilarious... until it got to the final one and the author really brought home how much depth there is to Kirk's character that you might not see right away. He's messy and all over the place and has his issues and is a stand up guy and brilliant and just... yes. This was so much of what James Kirk should be, all wrapped up in some gorgeous writing. (Kirk/OFC, Kirk/Gaila, Kirk/McCoy, and mostly Kirk/Spock.)
