- Tales of the Abyss - MAKIBISHI [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - So, I was at the video store the other day and happened to rent Tales of the Abyss, since I was looking for a new game to play. I didn't get as far into it as I would have liked, but I played enough to know that I kind of liked the story. Then I was browsing one of my regular oekaki sites and it was apparently Tales of the Abyss week recently. Well, if that's not fate, I thought. So, I started poking around and this is one of the first sites I really liked, the artist has a really solid style, some very pretty colors that remind me of the original game itself and a lot of fun concepts/poses/expressions for the characters, especially Guy and Luke. There are also some fantastic group images, very much like poster art for the game. A really solid site to start off a TotA hunt, I hope. (Maybe a little Guy/Luke? It could be completely gen, too.)
- Tales of the Abyss - colorcube [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - This site has some really super-cute art, some really pretty, light, airy coloring that reminds me a little of the game itself combined with adorable line-art and then some really cute concepts/poses. The artist really has a lot of skill, so her CG-style art looks really good and she totally does a great job with each and every character, and her girls are SO CUTE. There's a solid amount of art here, which made it even more fun to go through the gallery. ♥ (Maybe some pairings, but no real themes.)
- Tales of the Abyss - AONOGI [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - You know, I was enjoying this site, especially the artist's take on Ion + Anise (which I thought could have been/was cute in the game), but I think what I really fell for was the image of a younger Van and Tear in the foreground of an image, with their older, gloomier selves in the background. It's images like that that really delight me on sites, especially when the artist has a really solid style as well, the artist draws well and does some nice cel-style coloring and tends to do a lot of poster-like images. The artist also does an absolutely adorable Arietta and a really fantastic Synch and one of the better Anises I've seen. If nothing else, I think the site is worth checking out for the image of Tear doing Anise's hair that's one of the most adorable things I've ever seen. AND AND AND. The image of Luke sleeping against Tear's shoulder as she carries him that's so pretty, then the little extra doodle that shows him dreaming of Van while she goes ~_~ at him. alsdfkjasdlkfjsd HILARIOUS. ♥ And, really, there are a handful of illustrations (like kid!Tear that's beautifully done) that are just must-see images on this site and worth it right there. (....maybe a little Ion/Anise or Ion/Arietta, maybe a smidge of Luke/Tear, but mostly gen, I would say.)
- Tales of the Abyss - J-BACK [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I'm not sure if it's the nice sketch-like style of the artist that looks nice or the sheer amount of art here that made me like this site, but I found myself really enjoying a lot of the pieces on it. I think some of my favorite images are the Ion/Anise ones, a pairing that the fanart is quietly making me genuinely like, especially when they're so cute like they are here. The one of Ion kissing Anise's forehead, done in these soft pinks and greens, not quite sketchy, but still full of a lot of detail... that is the kind of thing I love. There's also this really awesome series of illustrations set post-game, when Ion and Anise are older (I think?) and they look so hot and, yeah, okay, I think this site officially made me ship them. That's how much I really liked the art. <3 (Ion/Anise, a little Luke/Tear, a little bit of other het maybe, a lot of gen.)
- Tales of the Abyss - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - The very first ToA image I saw on this site was a beautifully done Asch/Natalia image that immediately made me love the artist almost unconditionally. And maybe I'm just colored by my fondness for Natalia (who surprised me with how much I liked her, I figured I would at least somewhat like her, but I didn't count on loving her this much), but I really liked this site a lot. Some of the illustrations on the site aren't necessarily my favorites, but then others are just fantastic, the way the artist can use colors and a hint of sepia tone is really nice. There are a lot of cute chibis, there's a surprising amount of art tucked away on various pages, and the artist covers a wide variety of characters from the game. All excellent things. <3 (Some Asch/Natalia, some potential Asch/Luke/Natalia, a lot of gen, too.)
- Tales of the Abyss - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Oh, hello to a gorgeous use of color on this site! And the site has one of the prettiest Jade/Dist images I've seen yet! (I haven't hit up the Jade/Dist sites yet, so this may change, but it's still a gorgeous picture.) My favorite style of art has always been these finely drawn lines and an almost glowing style of colors, which this artist does really well at. The artist also does an amazing Peony and there's a lot of art and even her comics are gorgeous to go through. Each image is fantastic to look at, it's a must-see site if you like any of the characters (Jade, Dist, or Peony) even aside from the yaoi. The Jade/Dist is my favorite (there's this fantastic comic for them, too *__*) but the artist is quietly winning me over to Peony/Jade a little. <3 (Jade/Dist, Peony/Jade, a little other yaoi potentially implied. Occasional not-safe-for-work content.)
- Tales of the Abyss - 1or8 [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I took me all of one illustration with this site to fall in love and I knew I had to rec it. The artist's style is that combination of CG and watercolor style that I really like, that somehow the colors often seem to just glow or shine and she does an amazing job with each and every image. Almost all the main characters show up here and each of them are done just as beautifully as the last--there's almost hardly anything for me to point out or talk about with the site, simply because it's just so pretty and there's nothing for me to complain about. I love her Luke and her Ion especially, you can tell she seems very fond of the characters (Luke especially) and it's so easy to make the characters look kind of boring when you've seen as much fanart of them as I have, but this artist... I really did stop and stare at each image for half a minute just to take in the loveliness. (Some Jade/Luke, a lot of gen.)
- Tales of the Abyss - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - It didn't take me very long to become fond of this site at all, the artist is really good with the anime-style images and bright, solid colors and can draw incredibly smoothly so everything looks really clean and professional. But it's more than that, it's also that the artist tries out just about everything, while maybe Luke/Tear is the most common pair up, you can also find Ion/Anise or Guy/Anise or Asch/Natalia (including a sketch where Guy is putting a blanket over kiddie!Asch and kiddie!Natalia as they sleep against a tree together that is the cutest fucking thing ever ♥) or Luke/Anise or Jade/Natalia or Guy/Luke or Jade/Guy or a bunch of really adorable group pairings. All the art is so happy and upbeat and cute that I just feel great after visiting this site. ♥ (Some Luke/Tear, maybe a little other, but most of this could be entirely gen.)
- Odin Sphere/Tales of the Abyss - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I don't know if I would have recommended this site if I were only here for the Odin Sphere art, because there are only three or four regular images (plus a handful of doodled comics) and as lovely as they are (especially the artist's Velvet, who is really beautiful here), I wasn't sure I could justify an entire rec for them. (Though, there are more really pretty images in the oekaki board.) But then I started going through the Tales of the Abyss images and they were lovely, I only had to see two of them (one a beautiful Ion image, the other a really cute and pretty Luke image) before I knew this was going to be a site I loved. The artist uses soft, bright colors a lot, almost like the feel of a painting and makes it really work for her images. Some are melancholy, some are happy, some are kinda creepy, so many of them putting in a surprising amount of emotion. Plus. You know. So pretty. *__*<3 (Maybe a little Peony/Jade or Jade/Luke, but the majority of the site seems very gen.)
- Tales of the Abyss - RedCastle [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - It didn't take me long at all to fall in love with this artist's work, the bright colors and softened look to the images, the solid base art and adorable poses for just about everyone, a really good variety of characters used, all elements that win me over. And I really love that, no matter what pairings you like, there was probably a couple of images tucked away in the various galleries that you would like, along with genuinely good, solid art. I loved that the art was so cute, but that none of it felt half-finished, like a lot of art can sometimes start to feel when you have a site with this much on it. Even if it's simply putting a sunset in the background or a forest area or even just a simple sky, there was almost always something to make the image feel complete. Very nice. (Some het/yaoi pairings, but you could basically see it as a gen site.)
- Tales of the Abyss - Apuri [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I liked this site, it's some of the better Guy/Luke fanart I've yet to find, with very bright colors and nicely detailed poses. There's not a ton of art, but there's enough to make it a solid hit for those looking for a Guy/Luke fix or even just a starting place. Plus, man, those sprites on the main page are absolutely adorable, you can really feel how much the site owner likes Guy's character. A nice, fun site. (Guy/Luke.)
- Tales of the Abyss - Crono-Zero [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Oh, man, I'm just weak to this kind of art, the warm colors that are like a sunlightened version of sepia tones, all the pretty uses of soft yellows and reds and tans that work well with a pairing like Guy/Luke and, finally, the artist followed through with kidlet art. I am weak to the art of the characters as cute little kids. There's the occasional image of other people (there's a really nice lineart of Tear, too!) but mostly you're going to want to go here for the adorable Guy/Luke, I think. Very nice. (Some Guy/Luke, some gen.)
- Tales of the Abyss - MATAKOKODE [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - This is another site that took me a bit to get into, the artist's style took me a few pages to win me over, but eventually the bulk of the site finally won me over. Especially since I really love any image that has Dist in it and the artist does some very nice things with dark, burnished-metal-esque colors. There are a couple of especially lovely Tear illustrations, though, the artist mainly focuses on Jade's character, you can tell that he's her favorite. A nice little site to have come across this morning. <3 (A little bit of everything, het, yaoi, and gen. Lots of Jade focus, but kinda worth it for other characters, too.)
- Tales of the Abyss - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Okay. I was trying to remain strong with this site, there were only a handful of images in the main gallery, despite the utter cuteness of Jade and Dist (I think?) as kids in this really pretty light, airy watercolors style. But then I was going through the oekaki section and the artist had drawn pretty much everyone and her Asch was really cute and her Luke and Tear images were cute and then... as;dlijflaks dammit! Asch/Natalia! My weakness! Really cute, pretty Asch/Natalia art, too! And then one of Ion and Anise sitting next to each other with their hands on top of the other's! So cute! I have a weakness for a bunch of oekaki images dropped onto a page and the sum total of the site wins me over. So. Yes. Pretty art in the main gallery, fun oekaki, nice use of colors, and there's just enough of my preferred pairings to totally make me cave. XD (Some Asch/Natalia, some Asch/Luke, some other het, some other yaoi, a lot of gen, too.)
- Tales of the Abyss - Yumecyoko [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Oh, goddammit, I was trying to avoid recommending this site, because there was the occasional super-cute chibi image that I really liked, but most of the art didn't catch me that much. Until I started going through all of the gallery pages and the artist started drawing Ion/Anise and Sync/Arietta and a little Ion/Arietta and it's all these pastel pinks and greens that work so well together for these couples and then I was kind of quietly a goner. The site may not appeal to everyone, but if you like these pairings, I think you'll enjoy seeing the handful of art that the artist has here--I really do like how much detail the artist puts into the background in many of them, it makes the art that much more solid. :D (Some Ion/Anise, Sync/Arietta, maybe a little other het.)
- Tales of the Abyss/Howl's Moving Castle - NEST OF NO.35 [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I actually came here seeking fanart for something else (possibly Reborn! or Bleach or something) but got totally distracted by the Tales of the Aybss fanart. It's not something I would have sought out myself, but the colors are so lovely and the detail is really fantastic and the artist is just really talented. Her Jade is really, really pretty and her Anise is just lovely and there are comics making fun of Dist! How can I not love a site that teases Dist? Actually, the artist draws a really gorgeous Dist, but she totally teases him in much the same way the game teased him and I love that. ♥ The site mostly focuses on Jade and his relationships with the people around him, but you also get the occasional Luke/Tear image or a beautiful pin-up style sexy pose Natalia that I was not object to at all. Much the same can be said about the HMC art, it's all this really detailed, beautifully colored art that's often kind of stunning to look at. (A fair amount of Peony/Jade, some potential Jade/Anise, maybe a little other, but a lot of gen, too.)
- Tales of the Abyss - CYBER-GLOVE [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I have very firm pairings in Tales of the Abyss, but with fanart... I'm pretty easy, as long as something is pretty, I'm generally pretty happy to look at it. And I really liked the artist's take on the characters on this site, her Guy, Luke, and Asch are all very pretty and have that clean cg-style coloring that I like so much. The early art does start off a little shakey, but by the time I was halfway through the gallery, I knew I was going to be won over by the site. I also really like the artist's take on the characters (well, mostly Guy) in modern clothes, they're really pretty illustrations. A nice little fix for my ToA fanart cravings. :D (Luke/Guy, Asch/Guy, Jade/Guy, everyone/Guy, a smidge of Asch/Luke, and a smidge of gen.)
- Tales of the Abyss - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - It didn't take me long at all to warm up to this artist's style, the flat pastel pinks and greens that the artists uses, which suit characters like Ion, Anise, Sync, and Arietta so well, is a style I really like. Plus... you know, Sync/Arietta fanart. I really like that pairing a lot and a site like this feeds that by being so adorable. The art might not win anyone over, but it's very solidly good, especially as you start clicking the artist's more recent work. Plus! Plus! There's a small handful of Luke/Tear art and the artist's style also suits them pretty well and it's just so... so cute. (Sync/Arietta, a little Ion/Arietta, a little Luke/Tear, a lot of gen.)
- Tales of the Abyss - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I had actually surfed away from this page after going through about half of the gallery, though I still had a few of the illustrations open in tabs in my browser. There were a couple of illustrations that I'd like, the artist definitely showed potential, but I wasn't sure if she was there yet. But the more I looked through the rest of the pictures... I don't know what it is about this site, but there's something here that finally caught me. Maybe it was the handful of Asch/Natalia images that were really kinda nice, maybe it was that it's the first site I've seen with a Peony/Nephry illustration, maybe it's the super-cute Luke/Tear illustrations, maybe it's that the artist is actually pretty good at drawing Luke and Asch, I'm not sure. But I think, even if not everything appeals to a person, there's enough art here that's interesting to look at to make it worth the time. <3 (Some Luke/Tear, some Asch/Natalia, some other het, a lot of gen.)
- Tales of the Abyss - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I actually came here for the Destiny fanart (I was doing a quick trawl for Leon fanart, not really expecting to find much more than the occasional ToA illustration), but I started wobbling on this site around the time I saw the artist draw a younger Van and Guy looking adorable together. Then the artist had Guy in a gray and white uniform looking really kind of hot. And then there was a very nice one of the Malkuth officers (and Peony) from the game. And even Peony making Guy's life kind of miserable! I ♥'d this site after those illustrations, it's just a really fun, delightful, pretty site. XD (Some Guy/everyone yaoi, some gen.)
- Tales of the Abyss - BEAST-SIDE [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Jade/Luke isn't a pairing I gave a lot of thought (though, I can see where the potential came from in the game) and I even started out with the sketches on this page (working my way backwards instead of forwards) but I was immediately taken with how beautiful the sketches were. The lines are soft and elegant and make the characters look utterly fantastic. Everything is about these long limbs and soft clothes and intimate poses and it just works. As for the regular art, it's even more gorgeous, full of the same lovely lines and now even prettier, soft, warm colors. And, yes, the majority of the site is Jade/Luke, but every so often the artist does Asch+Luke or a group image or one of Peony in formal clothing and they're so great. I loved the site a lot. (Jade/Luke, some Asch+Luke gen.)
- Tales of the Abyss - 1or8 [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - It took me a little while to find the art on this site, but it was so very worth the effort, the light pastels, the watercolor-like style, the beautiful lines, all of it makes for some gorgeous fanart. When the artist does everything absolutely right, she creates these light, airy images that are just full of these almost-glowing colors and it's sites like this that keep me going back to the Tales of the Abyss fandom over and over. Or even revisiting sites and staring at all the art, since I feel like I may have been to this one before. (Too much fanart will rot your brain after awhile. orz) But, even if I have been here before, it's worth a revisit, even the sketches are very cute and, when the artist adds in a little color, they're really lovely to look at. ♥ (A little Jade/Luke, but it's mostly a gen site.)
- Tales of the Abyss - Sleeps [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Oh, god, the adorableness of Guy and little kidlet Luke on this site is practically lethal. The art is that kind I tend to be weak towards, the soft pastels and light, airy feel, then combined with kidlets. The older stuff is just as nice, though, with the same soft colors and surprising amount of detail when you look closely at them. Her Luke is especially cute, you can tell how much of a fondness for him the artist has. And, hey, it's nice to see a Guy/Luke site every once in awhile. <3 (Guy/Luke, some not-safe-for-work content if you keep poking around long enough.)
- Tales of the Abyss - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Perhaps I am easily weakened towards a site when it has a handful of Asch/Natalia illustrations on it, but I actually do really like this artist's work. There's a whole lot of little sketches and oekaki illustrations tucked away in these galleries and they're really fun to go through all at once. It also helps that the artist seems friendly towards the Keterburg characters, which always makes me sit up and take notice. <3 When the artist uses colors, they're those vivid, bright, sharp colors that work well with the manga/doujinshi-esque linearts and sketches, though her b&w stuff is just as nice. I had fun here. <3 (Some Jade/Luke, some Asch/Natalia, a lot of gen.)
- Tales of the Abyss/Gurren Lagann - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - It took me awhile to even realize there was ToA fanart on this site, it's a bit difficult to navigate, but the art is interesting enough that I wanted to recommend it anyways. The artist uses a lot of shiny CG tones, a lot of golds and reds, and it makes for some really pretty and/or interesting ToA art and it's not always my favorite, but... well, the doujinshi on the site show that the artist certainly has a lot of talent in drawing the characters at the very least. And! If you go through the diary blog to find the Gurren Lagann art... a lot of it is really pretty and I enjoyed going through all of it (especially since the artist occasionally draws Yoko, too! and the rest of the cast!), but the real novelty is Simon/Kamina. Granted, it's usually older!Simon, but still. I didn't think I'd ever see that! I had to rec it just for that little brain-breaking wtf bit. <3 There's more Kamina/Simon than the other way around, but all of it is nicely drawn and I had fun. Also, her older!Simon is hot. That's enough for me. XD (A lot of yaoi for Tales of the Abyss, some Kamina/Simon, some Simon/Kamina, some other yaoi, a little gen for Gurren Lagann.)
- Tales of the Abyss/Odin Sphere - side-A [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I was rather immediately charmed by the artist putting the ToA characters into various costumes, a handful of illustrations for most of the main characters, but it was really the image of Guy watching over little Luke and little Natalia playing together while little Asch stands apart from them, obviously watching in pain. It was a lovely take on that scene from the manga and finally won me over. The site also has some very solid, pretty art of most of the characters, the artist is especially good at drawing Luke (the sketches of him and/or Asch are especially lovely) and there's a very sweet Luke/Tear-friendly comic and the artist's Natalia is lovely in her comics as well. By the time I was getting to the last of the sketch/junk pages, the artist had gotten some really beautiful art in, I'm very glad to have stumbled over this site. As for the Odin Sphere section of the site, there's not much here (just one really pretty Mercedes image and then two pages of diary-style art, which is actually quite a lot since the artist puts a bunch on each page), but it's enough to count and the art is very nice. ♥__♥ A-also. Totally worth it for the image of Velvet with Pooka!Cornelius tucked under her arm and stepping on Ingway's bloody head. I LOL'd. (Several potential het pairings, but this site could be entirely gen as well. Whatever was canon on Odin sphere probably shows up here.)
- Tales of the Abyss/Okami - Rock Rock Rock [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - This site is definitely not going to be for everyone and I'm not even sure I can articulate why I like it so much, but... it's mostly scribbly art and very stylized, which is cute as it is. But what caught me about this site is that... the more I clicked through the gallery, the more and more I found myself smiling in amusement or thinking a particular illustration was cool. There's Nephry fanart! There's an image of the Keterburg kids burying Saphir in a snowman shaped just like him! There's some really cool Natalia art! Anise is super-cute! There's some really kinda cool Legretta fanart! Asch often looks hot! There's a handful of Asch/Natalia images! The site as a whole managed to win me over with enough illustrations that were just adorable enough to add up to a fun total. As for the Okami art, it's more of the same--I'm not sure how to describe why it's so cute, other than to flail over Waka being a dork or Sakuya being pretty or how some of the Princess Fuse fanart is actually kinda pretty or how Kai is super-cute. It's just a site that's adorable and makes me happy. XD (A little bit of a lot of different things. Probably the most prominent were Luke/Tear, Asch/Natalia, Peony/Nephry, Sync/Arietta. Nothing I'm going to count for Okami.)
